Experience Points Experience Points are part of a character advancement system commonly found in RPGs. These points are generally gained by defeating an enemy or completing a task. |

Sprite Sprites are 2D images used in video games. Most games used sprites as a means to display images until the advent of polygonal 3D gaming. |

Save Point A Save Point is a gameplay element typically found in Adventure and RPG games that allow the player to save his/her game session midway through the level. |

Magic The concept of affecting the universe through supernatural methods, breaking the physical laws. Can take form as an act performed by a person (magician,conjurer, wizard, ...) as a property of an item (artifact, wand, focus, ...) or as latent characteristic of a world. |

|
Party System A system in which the player is allowed to control multiple characters. Most commonly seen in role playing games. Can also be used to describe party systems in the MMORPG genre, which brings a group of players together to accomplish various tasks. |

Upgradeable Weapons Sometimes that trusty old rifle just can't cut it anymore but you can't bare the thought of tossing it out. When that happens it's time to upgrade! |

Elements Wind, water, earth and fire (and others).... often associated with magic. |

|
Loot Gathering Collecting objects in a game such as weapons, armor, items, and currency. Loot is often associated with MMOs and games with RPG elements. |

Health Health is a value that gauges how much damage a player can take in a game before they die or pass out. Also known as Hit Points (HP) or Life in some games - not to be confused with Lives. |

Artificial Intelligence Artificial Intelligence, or AI, commonly refers to the programmed behaviors of NPCs in a game, whether it's the fact that a soldier takes cover behind a wall in Gears of War, or that townspeople cheer upon your arrival to their village in Fable. |

Stat Tracking Stat Tracking is when games keep track of various sorts of information related to player performance or progress. This feature can be found in various RPGs and now many FPSs as well. This does not include statistics in sports games, unless related to your personal performance. |

In-Game Map Editor Map Makers or Editors are built-in tools that allow the average gamer to tweak or fully customize a map of their own, with no mod or programming skills required. |

|
Revive The concept of Reviving somebody who is dead or down. |
|
|
Poison A concept in games most often seen in RPGs and FPS games. Many RPGs have certain attacks that while doing low damage, poison the enemy causing them to take damage over time. FPS games sometimes have similar uses of poisons such as rooms filled with poison gas damaging you as you walk around in them. |

Chocobo Species of large yellow birds used as transportation in the Final Fantasy series. Chocobos have also starred in their own games. |

|
Hit Points An indication of the amount of damage a character can sustain in game. The loss of all hit points results in the players death, or penalty. |

Healing Food More effective than any hospital, these games let you heal damage ranging from a black eye to a gunshot wound just by having a snack. |

|
Leveling Up The process by which characters reach a new level, gain greater attributes, and learn more abilities. It usually involves earning enough experience points. |

|
Moogles These furry creatures created a pact with humans to sell us important medical supplies and deadly weaponry miles away from any shops. Where do they keep all of this stuff? |

|
Melee From Beat-em-ups to fighting games to modern FPS, one dude hitting another has made an enjoyable pastime. |

|
Inventory A gameplay mechanic allowing players to store their items and freely carry them around. |
|
|
Sprinting A gameplay mechanic which allows the player to move faster than the normal speed. Usually for a set amount of time. |
|
|
World Map A viewable map that displays the entire game world. The map also usually shows the player's location in the world. |
|
|
Monster Capturing This feature typically found in RPGs lets you capture enemies and then use them in your own party. |

|
Game Over Game Over originally appeared in pinball machines and, later, arcade machines. When you lose at a game, it is game over. |

|
Original Soundtrack Games that have an Original Soundtrack album. |
|
|
Top-Down Perspective The top down perspective is a camera angle used in video games to show the player and the area around him or her from above. The perspective is commonly seen in 2D RPG games and strategy games. |

|
Status Effects A condition which affects a character's effectiveness, either positively or negatively. Common examples include Poison or Haste. |
|
|
Non-Player Character Characters controlled by the game for players to interact with, as opposed to player characters, the characters controlled by whomever is playing the game. |

Overworld An overworld is a simplified view of the game world, which lets the player move to different locations or levels. This is a system most commonly found in (older) RPG's. |

Boss Fight A boss fight is a culminating challenge that pits the player against one or more enemies representing a greater threat and/or difficulty than those previously faced. These scenarios typically feature unique antagonists. |

Damage Numbers For games that show a number representing how much damage you've done when attacking an enemy. |
