We're Getting a LEGO Marvel Game, Even Though We Probably Shouldn't Be Getting One of Those

Here's something that I doubt anyone expected to happen. Today, LEGO video game publisher WB Games has announced LEGO Marvel Super Heroes, a blocky, kid-friendly take on the Marvel Comics universe, featuring all the heroes and villains you've seen on screen so regularly over these last several years, except made out of blocks.

Why is that weird? Well, for starters, WBI's parent company also owns DC Comics, otherwise known as Marvel's chief rival over, like, all of the decades they've coexisted. So, basically, this is all very peculiar.

But hey, at least it's positive peculiar, right? If nothing else, it just goes to show that with the right amount of money, heart, money, determination, and also money, no LEGO adaptation is impossible.

This particular adaptation, by the way, features an original story with Thor, the Hulk, Spider-Man, Wolverine, and a host of others as they attempt to thwart foes like Loki and Galactus. It, like most LEGO games, is coming to myriad different platforms, including...*deep breath*...the PlayStation 3, the Xbox 360, the PC, the Wii U, the DS, the 3DS, and the PlayStation Vita. Maybe even other platforms, if we get more platform announcements this year.

Say what you will about Lego games, they are always pretty well made games. Well on console at least, don't hear nice things about the handheld versions.

I like LEGO, not a Marvel fan myself (I've always liked DC a lot more), but I'll check it out. TT's LEGO games are always fun, though a little repetitive.

Sounds good to me. I feel like there's less vitriol surrounding the DC Marvel thing. It's probably because a lot of us who grew up with one or the other can afford to buy both now. Just a thought.

They should do Back to the Future Trilogy lego game. Though maybe it doesn't have enough recognizable characters.

Considering that there have been Marvel LEGO toys floating around for a while now, it was only a matter of time before this happened so no big surprise.

On a slight side note: I think both Marvel and DC need to expand their LEGO toys to beyond what has been in the movies and games. Not that there's anything wrong with what they have now, some of the sets are pretty neat. I just feel that since comic book related stuff's popularity is rising (now that the people who aren't fans of comics are seeing the light), Marvel and DC should take advantage and at least get on par with the other LEGO franchises out there.

Shame it has come so soon after Lego LOTR. I can't play LEGO games consecutively on account of how repetitive they are.

However, if this is more like the second Lego Batman game, I might be interested.

Seeing how well I'm sure the marvel series does for LEGO, I wouldn't be surprised if this was some requirement LEGO made years ago if WB wanted to keep the license. Also more money for WB, so why not.

Also, other than batman, I'd be shocked if kids didn't prefer marvel heroes.

What the eff? That is a crazy story Alex! I'd love to get me some Marvel in my Lego games but I can't believe that they're doing it. Should Legos talk? I hope they get the cast from the Earth's Mightiest Heroes cartoon to do the voices.

I'm starting to think the LEGO games are mostly going to be something I sweep up during summers, two or three years after their respective releases. I haven't played one since the original Lego Batman. And I tried Indiana Jones, but I don't remember it very well.

Honestly, similar to my experience with Pokémon; I played the first one through to completion (first in this format being Lego Star Wars,) then the sequel about halfway (Lego Star Wars 2,) and only dabbled in whatever else I played.

I know that there are Lego games that are not in this format, but...actually, when was the last one? I played a lot of Lego Racers for the N64. And I know there was a Lego Racers 2, and I don't think Lego City Undercover counts as the same format, but it's not out yet.

It'd probably be JJ because that's where the money is now, but with levels that callback to classic episodes of the original series.

There was the short-lived Lego MMO.

Lego City Undercover basically looks the same as the more recent games. Both Batman 2 and LoTR (and presumably this new Marvel one) are big open world things with a lot of side quests.
