We're Getting a LEGO Marvel Game, Even Though We Probably Shouldn't Be Getting One of Those

Here's something that I doubt anyone expected to happen. Today, LEGO video game publisher WB Games has announced LEGO Marvel Super Heroes, a blocky, kid-friendly take on the Marvel Comics universe, featuring all the heroes and villains you've seen on screen so regularly over these last several years, except made out of blocks.

Why is that weird? Well, for starters, WBI's parent company also owns DC Comics, otherwise known as Marvel's chief rival over, like, all of the decades they've coexisted. So, basically, this is all very peculiar.

But hey, at least it's positive peculiar, right? If nothing else, it just goes to show that with the right amount of money, heart, money, determination, and also money, no LEGO adaptation is impossible.

This particular adaptation, by the way, features an original story with Thor, the Hulk, Spider-Man, Wolverine, and a host of others as they attempt to thwart foes like Loki and Galactus. It, like most LEGO games, is coming to myriad different platforms, including...*deep breath*...the PlayStation 3, the Xbox 360, the PC, the Wii U, the DS, the 3DS, and the PlayStation Vita. Maybe even other platforms, if we get more platform announcements this year.

Very cool. Also like what we're hearing about the story already. Though... I fear I've had my run of LEGO games. Still sounds fun! :)

Where there's money to be made, there will be LEGO.

Say what you will about Lego games, they are always pretty well made games. Well on console at least, don't hear nice things about the handheld versions.

I like LEGO, not a Marvel fan myself (I've always liked DC a lot more), but I'll check it out. TT's LEGO games are always fun, though a little repetitive.

Lego lego everything lego!

If I find the special They Live glasses will it be revealed to me that everyone is Legos?

Lego DC vs. Marvel... do it...

#8 Posted by Foggen (861 posts) -

I was a full throttle Marvel kid, so I couldn't be more excited about this.

#9 Posted by JesterPC238 (341 posts) -

Sounds good to me. I feel like there's less vitriol surrounding the DC Marvel thing. It's probably because a lot of us who grew up with one or the other can afford to buy both now. Just a thought.

I had my fingers crossed they'd be announcing a Turtles game next, but this is almost as good. (and inevitable)

LEGO Lord of the Rings is fucking great. Probably the best LOTR game I've ever played. So I'm all over this.

#13 Posted by Sphinx (69 posts) -

If it's good, they can have my money! Finally LEGO doing a franchise I somewhat care about...if they do LEGO Warhammer 40k they can have all my money!

#14 Posted by ImmortalSaiyan (4683 posts) -

I like that Spider Man. This may be good.

#15 Posted by RVonE (4642 posts) -

LEGO Marvel Ultimate Alliance is what should happen.

#16 Posted by Wacomole (820 posts) -

Avengers... Assemble!

#17 Posted by Parsnip (1092 posts) -

I think I'm all legoed out.

They should do Back to the Future Trilogy lego game. Though maybe it doesn't have enough recognizable characters.

It seems Marvel, not DC, is a better fit for what they do.

#19 Posted by Krummey (198 posts) -

They've partnered with Lucas and Disney before. Doesn't seem that odd.

Has lego mortal kombat been done yet? I'd buy that.

Literally.

This sounds pretty fucking cool. Lego Marvel Ultimate Alliance?

Considering that there have been Marvel LEGO toys floating around for a while now, it was only a matter of time before this happened so no big surprise.

On a slight side note: I think both Marvel and DC need to expand their LEGO toys to beyond what has been in the movies and games. Not that there's anything wrong with what they have now, some of the sets are pretty neat. I just feel that since comic book related stuff's popularity is rising (now that the people who aren't fans of comics are seeing the light), Marvel and DC should take advantage and at least get on par with the other LEGO franchises out there.

Honestly sounds like a fun game. Not something I really expected, but very cool nonetheless.

#25 Posted by Cheesebob (1240 posts) -

Shame it has come so soon after Lego LOTR. I can't play LEGO games consecutively on account of how repetitive they are.

However, if this is more like the second Lego Batman game, I might be interested.

Seeing how well I'm sure the marvel series does for LEGO, I wouldn't be surprised if this was some requirement LEGO made years ago if WB wanted to keep the license. Also more money for WB, so why not.

Also, other than batman, I'd be shocked if kids didn't prefer marvel heroes.

#28 Posted by Mezmero (1927 posts) -

What the eff? That is a crazy story Alex! I'd love to get me some Marvel in my Lego games but I can't believe that they're doing it. Should Legos talk? I hope they get the cast from the Earth's Mightiest Heroes cartoon to do the voices.

#29 Posted by myslead (929 posts) -

they should do a crossover

marvel vs dc lego

and make it so you can mix different heroes parts together to have different powers.

I'm starting to think the LEGO games are mostly going to be something I sweep up during summers, two or three years after their respective releases. I haven't played one since the original Lego Batman. And I tried Indiana Jones, but I don't remember it very well.

Honestly, similar to my experience with Pokémon; I played the first one through to completion (first in this format being Lego Star Wars,) then the sequel about halfway (Lego Star Wars 2,) and only dabbled in whatever else I played.

I know that there are Lego games that are not in this format, but...actually, when was the last one? I played a lot of Lego Racers for the N64. And I know there was a Lego Racers 2, and I don't think Lego City Undercover counts as the same format, but it's not out yet.

The Marvel fanbase is America's king cash crop. Milk those suckers into infinity

A really limited set with the Delorean is coming out this year, but yeah there's not enough characters for a BTTF game.

Can they just strip out the current Lego gameplay system, and make Lego Marvel: Ultimate Alliance?

Please?

I love how that image has the entire cast of Movie Avengers, but with Spider-Man instead of Hawkeye.

Poor Hawkeye. Guy can't catch a break.

#37 Posted by Levius (1142 posts) -

Still waiting for Lego Star Trek, but Marvel seems perfect for the Lego games series.

#38 Posted by SeanFoster (871 posts) -

I'd like Lego Star Trek.

#39 Posted by vegetashonor (614 posts) -

This sounds like a perfect 3ds time killer to me

#41 Posted by louiedog (2335 posts) -

I can't believe this wasn't announced for the Nvidia Shield.

#42 Posted by iAmJohn (6121 posts) -

I'm so goddamn bored of LEGO games.

I actually really like the Lego games. dumb fun with friends, but well put together mechanics and puzzles behind that. marvel is great too so I'll probably pick this up one day

#45 Posted by JuggaloAcidman (293 posts) -

Yet another fucking Lego games... It's practically the same game everytime! Please let this one be different... An actual open world would be nice!

It'd probably be JJ because that's where the money is now, but with levels that callback to classic episodes of the original series.

There was the short-lived Lego MMO.

Lego City Undercover basically looks the same as the more recent games. Both Batman 2 and LoTR (and presumably this new Marvel one) are big open world things with a lot of side quests.

I see no problem with it,it's great for younger kids.6 year olds don't need to be playing call of duty.

#49 Posted by s10129107 (1183 posts) -

If they can do this then they can do a Marvel vs. DC fighting game. DO IT!

Lego James Bond please.
