After the Second War, Ner'zhul sought for a way to escape the ravaged planet Draenor, and he attempted to open portals into other worlds. However, immediately after opening one of these portals, he was captured by Kil'jaeden. For his defiance, Ner'zhul's body was torn asunder while his spirit was kept alive in limbo until such a time that Kil'jaeden had use for him, which would be some years later. Binding his spirit to the Frozen Throne, Kil'jaeden created the Lich King.
After the Third War, despite the efforts of Sylvanas Windrunner and Illidan Stormrage to stop him, Arthas had managed to make it to the Frozen Throne and fuse with Nerz'hul to become a single being. Thus, the Lich King was born.

Antagonist in WoW expansion Wrath of the Lich King. Commands the undead Scourge.
The Lich King is a powerful entity created after Arthas Menethil and Nerz'hul had fused together, that is currently the ruler over the Undead Scourge. He resides in the Frozen Throne on the continent of Northrend. From there, he commands his vast armies of undead.Origin
Once upon a time, the Lich King was an Orc Shaman named Ner'zhul, who was a very influential figure among all the orc clans on Draenor. Ner'zhul was manipulated by Kil'jaeden, who convinced him that the Draenei, a peaceful race also living on Draenor, were a threat. Ner'zhul in turn manipulated the orcs into going to war with the Draenei. However, Ner'zhul soon realized that Kil'jaeden was leading the orcs down a dark and treacherous path, and refused to be complicit in his scheming any longer. Kil'jaeden replaced Ner'zhul with his apprentice, Gul'dan, whose lust for power made him an all too willing servant. Ner'zhul was forced to stand by powerless. After the Second War, Ner'zhul sought for a way to escape the ravaged planet Draenor, and he attempted to open portals into other worlds.
