Lifeline, also known as Lifeline: Voice Action Adventure, known in Japan as Operator's Side, and not to be confused with the 1984 and 2015 games of the same name, is a sci-fi survival horror game developed by SCE Japanand published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation 2 (Platform) in Japan on January 30, 2003, with a North American release by Konami (Company) in March 2, 2004. It did not receive a European release.

Set in near-future 2029, players control a guest aboard a Japanese space station hotel, being trapped in the main control room after an attack from monstrous creatures. Having access to the station's cameras, the guest becomes the "Operator" to one of the survivors, cocktail waitress Rio Hohenheim (Character), and must communicate with her to help her navigate the station safely, search for more survivors, and investigate the true nature of the alien infestation.

Unlike other survival horror games, Lifeline makes mandatory use of a USB headset microphone peripheral (which is included in some copies of the Japanese version) for speech recognition, with the player guiding Rio by conversing with her. There are numerous spoken commands both in-and-out of combat, directing her where to go, what to interact with, and where to shoot.

Gameplay

The gameplay is based around the use of voice commands. The player must instruct Rio on how to proceed through the game, including combat situations where she can be told specific alien body parts to aim for.

Reception

The game was widely panned upon release due to the gimmicky and imprecise use of voice commands. On the January 27, 2009 Bombcast, Giant Bomb staff member Ryan Davis (Person) stated this game as his worst voice-controlled game experience ever.
