So, first impressions anyone?

@hailinel: Yeah, I definitely recommend getting the ultima weapon because with it, you can just melee his 3 other forms to death with little to no effort. And yeah, don't worry about all these crazy garb set ups, they're only making everything sound way more complicated than it really is. I literally just beat him by equipping Aero on my Cloud garb and spamming it. :P

I see! I didn't realize that the ultima weapon was that powerful. I suppose that is worth facing down those trials for. As much of a wall as the boss has proven me though (and I seem to be the only one here that's had trouble with him so far, by all accounts), I'm really enjoying this game.

I finally finished it a few days ago. Didn't manage to beat the last boss on my first try either (funny after being able to kill the optional bosses), since I had a setup that, while it ripped through his first few forms, just left me incapable of staggering his last form.

I thought the ending was pretty good and a more or less fitting conclusion for the trilogy. The reunion scenes were nice too.

That secret after credits scene though, man, I don't know. First of all: come on, that's just really cheap, because it just has been done so many, many times already (just look at the recent Battlestar Galactica series). And also this pretty much begs for a continuation again with the way the left it, since seemingly no one actually reunited here and Light's "soon" comment is just ambiguous enough.

So I think I somehow fucked myself, unless I'm missing something. I've done 61 sidequests and failed two (one of which was purposely to get to another). I still haven't unlocked the final day. It's my first playthrough and on Easy. Is that a new game plus only thing? A Hard mode thing? Only quests left are that Last One quest (which I can't complete) and the one concerning Aeronite (which I probably can't do either). Canvas of Prayers don't count from what I'm told so am I just boned or something?

@kishinfoulux: You should be able to ... are you sure you didnt missed other quest .... because I didnt competed those plus 2 other more and I still got the 14 th day. And no the 14 day appeared on my first and only playthrough of the game.

Edit: Oh maybe because you failed 2 ... I only failed one but then you get the quest to "mend"it up ... thou only finished the first half of it.

I just beat the game! Ultima Weapon + Spira's Summoner garb = HILARITY

And I really, really like the way that the game ended. There's only so many satisfying ways to conclude such a story where you kill an almighty god in the finale, and it does get a bit sappy, but holy shit, what a ride. I loved every minute of this game.

You just have to do a lot of sidequests and deliver an extra abundance of Eradia. Though the game doesn't alert you to the fact you've secured the extra day until the end of day twelve.

Not really first impressions - more like "impressions just before the end", seeing how I'm on "the extra day".

Really been struggling to keep my motivation up for this game, which has been getting harder and harder to do as I got through the game - at some point around day 8, I decided I'd had enough and started just sleeping through the days rather than farming for final creatures, or finishing the last few quests - I believe I only have the 2 quests left in the Dead Dunes - and I've read that Aeronite is the hardest enemy to defeat in the game, and especially hard to do pre-NG+. Whatever. Tempted to make a stab at the extra day dungeon, though I'm not sure if I have what it takes to grind my way through the Ultima lair fights.

I don't like how they've been gating abilities and upgrade mechanics through most of the game - as it just means that I probably won't use them as I pretty much stopped actually playing the game on day 9... :s

Also alluding to upgradeable weapons/garb but not unlocking it before NG+ is a bit of a jerk move.

As for the story, I hate how they keep harping about how emotionless Hope and Lightning are, and then they keep showing Lightning smiling and raging. I don't think making Lightning emotionless is a good idea - they've never portrayed her as someone who openly shows her emotions, so it's hard to tell the difference, and it doesn't give the player the dissonance that I feel it's supposed to... (I think they almost make it work with Sazh, though) but I think that if they were going to make her emotionless, they should at least stick to the script.

There are some interesting things they are suggesting with Lumina... will be interesting to see how that turns out. I'm pretty sure they'll take the easy way out... but we'll see.

Pacing is a bit weird as well - I admit I abused the hell out of Chronostasis on day 4-7 (or so), but suddenly just running out of content without any clear indicator if there are main quests that I should be finding in the world, or if there's just something that will trigger on it's on on the final days... (being on the extra day now, I understand that it's just the final day quest left now. I still don't like the uncertainty).

Overall, it's not a bad game, but I feel like my issues with the character portrayal, and certain mechanics being locked to NG+ (which I don't have time (or interest) to get into) really lowers the game to mediocricy for me.

edit: Wound up rerolling to a save I made before "sleeping away" the last couple of days, and have gone back to grinding my power level up to be able to defeat the Ultimate Lair and Aeronite. Guess I'm a sucker for self-flagellation and/or bored. :|
