So Gametrailers posted this trailer today mistakenly early and then they took it down and now BOOM. Like a ninja I found dat shit on Youtube. (okay so I complained on twitter and someone linked me but hey...) Anyways, trailer is below. Looks pretty great if you ask me I really enjoy the character design of Lightning she is one of my favorite female characters I think probably ever if I really drill down into things. Anyways as advertised looks like its going to be her final journey and she is doing it alone. I'm going to be real interested to see how they explain and work in everything that happened at the end of FFXIII-2 and how exactly she plans on saving not just the world but well... time itself. So whats everyone think?

Seeing frame drops in a promotional trailer is certainly a cause for concern.

I am still really confused on how this new city got formed; Is it the city on Bhunivelze or whatever the fuck it was, the new cocoon?

Still, I'm pretty excited, that combat seems potentially interesting (seems like more action based form of the 13 battle system)

#4 Posted by envane (1164 posts) -

suprisingly hyped but that battle system looks worrying .. if its alll basicly an extended version of the lightnings requiem minigame (the "true ending" dlc ) then im going to be sorely disappointed .. it was fun but a single party member for the entire game :( blleehhhhhh

otherwise looks like were slowly converging on the world from the original ff versus 13 trailer.

#5 Posted by Oldirtybearon (4880 posts) -

looks appropriately awful.

#6 Posted by Zacagawea (1613 posts) -

I feel like these games just get weirder and weirder. Also, dem frames.

#7 Posted by Animasta (14719 posts) -

also wonder which god they're talking about, cause there's multiple gods in the FF lexicon and Etro died (for our sins). Either Pulse or Lindzei I guessssssssssssss

#8 Posted by believer258 (12182 posts) -

That city reminded me of the one in Dragon Age 2.

#9 Posted by TheHT (11769 posts) -

Nope. Looks silly.

That battle music is still great though.

#10 Posted by Demoskinos (15134 posts) -

@Animasta: I got a bit of a Crisis Core vibe off of it minus the absolutely DUMB slots system.

#11 Posted by Demoskinos (15134 posts) -

@Animasta: Also is there really? Cause I took the last game as Etro was kind of the "IT" of the universe since ya know... the timeline started to collapse once Noel killed Caius.

well DA2 was basically a JRPG anyway so it makes perfect sense

@Demoskinos: pulse made the world and lindzei made the fal'cie (and cocoon) so I would assume they're all equally important (I think Lindzei was the deity the Primarch was trying to bring back by killing Cocoon)

#13 Posted by MentalDisruption (1670 posts) -

I don't think I could enjoy just having a single party member the entire game. Not unless the combat system is drastically different. Either way, I still need to get to XIII-2 before I'll consider giving this a go.

#14 Posted by Freezer_Burn (207 posts) -

Man, you can really hear the Liara in Lightning's voice. The city setting is kinda weird, and got  a bit of an AssCreed vibe from it.

#15 Posted by Fredchuckdave (6136 posts) -

@Demoskinos: Lightning strikes me as an unremarkable character, not terrible granted and certainly no Hope but not really anything special either. Karen from Shadow Hearts: Covenant is probably the best female character I can think of and exceeds Lightning in virtually every regard up to and including usefulness in combat.

Shame that the only thing I like about those games (13/13-2) is the combat and nothing else.

So the game is now RPG Assassin's Creed where everything climbable is highlighted in red similar to Mirror's Edge, and at some point Lightning gets sick ass Adam Jensen sunglasses?

What the fuck is Final Fantasy XIII now?

#19 Posted by Demoskinos (15134 posts) -

@Animasta: Fuck, its been awhile so what was Orphan's ploy then? I remember vaguely the whole Ragnarok thing with Vanille and Fang but I forget why that mattered.

well considering how 13-2 ends, lightening is basically a demigod by this point, so probably a little more useful (I agree with you on the whole though, not that special).

@Demoskinos: they wanted to bring back their deity because of... reasons I can't even begin to remember, and ragnarok was just them trying to save cocoon

god that game is such a blur, I remember 13-2 much better

Liara?

Liara?

she's always been liara

#23 Posted by face15 (1306 posts) -

@Animasta: I played like 20 hours of XIII and didn't notice until just watching that trailer. That's good stuff.

#24 Edited by Encephalon (1332 posts) -

Not a huge fan of Lighting as a character, but she was miles ahead of pretty much everyone else but Sazh... Come to think of it, I would totally play Sazh Returns: Final Fantasy XIII.

@Demoskinos: Orphan's ploy was to kill everybody on Cocoon so that their departing souls would throw open a metaphysical door beyond which their god lived. Basically, the Fal'cie missed their daddy so they threw a hissy fit to get his attention. Ragnarok, I believe, was the only thing badass enough to do the job, since Cocoon Fal'cie are apparently prohibited from sabotaging themselves.

Didn't find it a terribly compelling motivation at the time, but there it is.

@Encephalon: I mean to be fair it's not like dysley was a terribly compelling character beyond his voice actor so it fits.

also they were literal gods so who knows what the fuck motivates them

I do think Snow is a great character if only for silliness and propensity for breaking the 4th wall. Also punching dudes and shooting guns in the air yelling you're a terrorist is fantastic.

that joke was funny when the game was announced

(also she's right FF13 was bad but 13-2 was way better and no one cared)

#29 Posted by SuperWristBands (2266 posts) -

No intention on buying it because I can't stand Final Fantasy stories anymore (XII-2's characters broke me) but I find myself interested non-the-less because it looks like they made the game like the Lightning DLC for XII-2 which was the only part of the game I actually liked. Well, the one-on-one system anyway, not having to fight that dude over and over and lose over and over just so that I could "level up" and finish it.

#30 Posted by rjayb89 (7728 posts) -

I'll only watch that trailer if Serah is dead for sure for sure and if Fang is alive alive.

the first part is accurate (afaik), the second is probably accurate, I think they cut Fang and Vanille out of the crystal before boxing up the city

#32 Posted by envane (1164 posts) -

@Animasta: yeah but wont the whole eventual endpoint be that time is fixed blah blah and serah doesnt have to sacrifice herself to save lightning form her destiny since lightnings destiny of being stuck in time or whatever will not exist ? just saying its highly likely serah comes back.

They have yet to mention her at all, afaik, so I honestly have no idea

#34 Posted by rjayb89 (7728 posts) -

Oh boy, that framerate. And I guess this ruins my Liara/Rise fan fic.

#35 Edited by AuthenticM (3802 posts) -

This looks fucking terrible. Holy shit. The environments look like an Xbox game uprezed in HD. I got a Sudeki vibe from it. And that framerate. That HUD. Ugh. Please Square, don't fuck this up any further than you already have.

edit: didn't square say that this was an action-RPG, not unlike Versus ? If so, then why do I get the feeling that the combat is the exact same as in the first two games, but with actions mapped to the face buttons, Dragon Age-style ?

If this game is even half as good as Crisis Core I will be happy.

#37 Posted by endaround (2147 posts) -

So Lightning is Bayonetta now, fighting the corrupt minions of god. Except, you know, not awesome to its core.

#38 Posted by korkesh (133 posts) -

I'm pumped, this looks like it can be interesting, I loved the combat in the last two I hope this takes it a step further. Unlike most people I really loved 13 and not so much 13-2. I hope story wise it leans more to 13.

#39 Posted by Piqued_Interest (63 posts) -

It is almost like they grabbed footage from a prototype build...The city seems empty, and uninteresting.

The combat might be great, and that's why I stuck through all of XIII and most of XIII-2, so I guess a wait and see approach is in order.

And by wait and see I mean, wait until I can snag it from 20 bucks or less.

#40 Posted by TooWalrus (13256 posts) -

This game looks weird. I'm not sure what's going on, I'm not sure I like the idea of playing solo, but...

WHY THE FUCK AM I SO HYPED FOR THIS GAME!?

#41 Posted by AuthenticM (3802 posts) -

@TooWalrus: Because you're being irrational ? Seriously, there is nothing to be hyped about for now. Maybe the game will turn out to be great; but from what we have so far, you should not be reacting this way.

#42 Posted by TooWalrus (13256 posts) -

@AuthenticM: I actually really liked FFXIII. I finished XIII-2 and while I don't think it was as good, I still enjoyed it... Maybe that music still grips at my heart strings or something. I don't even care what kind of reception this game gets, I'll be buying it day one.

#43 Posted by Flappy (2352 posts) -

Sigh...

This might be another Day 1 Purchase. I -really- hope Square doesn't muck this up.

#44 Posted by korkesh (133 posts) -

@TooWalrus: GET HYPE!

I'm with ya I dont know why either but something about it!

#48 Edited by xyzygy (10077 posts) -

Nice, looks pretty badass. It looks like this time around, Paradigms will change the inputs of ABXY and give it that more action-RPG feel. Also, she looks like a more awesome and flow-y version of Ezio when walking around town. Love her new style, they really know what to do when designing her character. I noticed as well that you can change equipment and it actually will change what she's wearing. That's neat as fuck, finally a Final Fantasy game with equippable clothing and gear that you can notice, instead of just a sword or accessories. I can't remember if any other FF games have that feature.

Haha! Never seen that before till now!

What's up with the frame rate in that video? lol

Either way I am excited for this game, played both XIII and XIII-2. I think they were both decent entries in the FF series.

#50 Posted by Pepsiman (2491 posts) -

As someone who's never played any of the XIII games, the only thing that stands out to me personally in that trailer aside from that delightful frame rate is that innocuous pole in the middle of the city. I just like how it seems to be there mostly because it can be there and nothing else.
