Limbo Creators Working On New IP Targeted At Fans

Posted by BradNicholson (812 posts) -
Playdead Studios, the developer behind Xbox Live Arcade darling Limbo, is in the process of creating a new title. Normally, this wouldn't be a newsworthy kind of story--games studios make games because, well, that's what they do. But it's nice to hear confirmation that the small, super indie Denmark-based house can continue working on new games after, apparently, receiving enough profit from its first release.

Oh, yeah, and this new title? It's a completely fresh IP that fans of Limbo will apparently be able to get behind, according to studio CEO Dino Patti. Speaking with Joystiq during an event in California this past weekend, Patti said this new game will "be for [fans of Limbo]." He elaborated by stating, "The gameplay style you'll really like. You'll feel it's the same team who made it, but everything will be changed."

Here's our Quick Look of Limbo, if you missed it for whatever reason. It's a unique and punishing platformer that's big on atmosphere and puzzle solving. Also, giant spiders and spikes.

It's obviously early in the game making process, so Patti isn't sure if this new IP will be an exclusive title like Limbo remains on Xbox Live Arcade, but he told Joystiq that the goal is, of course, to get this new game into as many hands as possible. We'll have to see.

Be interesting to see what they do next.

Define: super indie.

Reminds me, I still need to finish that game, nothing really drives me though, don't find the game super interesting to play, although the setting and atmosphere is superb.

on PC and PS3 this time please

PC and/or PS3, please. It's killing me that I can't play Limbo, it looks amazing!

Cheers, Nicholson, for letting us know a game developer is making a game and that it's going to be for people who enjoyed their last game. Such groundbreaking journalism confirms that this year's Pulitzer prize is headed your way.

@Death_Unicorn like indie but even better

I really enjoyed Limbo.  The minimalist style works with the visuals, but not so much with the actual gameplay.  Hopefully this next game is improved in that area.

Limbo took 4 years to make.. I'm hoping the get the next game out a tad faster.

Wonderful news for us fans, and a well deserved success for the developers. Just hoping they can pull of something similar with this next IP.

An indie that's disguised as a mild mannered reporter, but when a new game has to come out, off come the glasses and the shirt to become a Super Indie.

Yeah, chipping in to agree with the ps3 or pc (which is a strange way to spell Steam) sentiments.  I don't own an xbox, gears and halos do just about nothing for me, but this little arcade title and the ongoing Fable hoarding are causing me serious strain.

Always good when someone makes a profit doing something a little bit different, or at least not trying the easy option. Loved Limbo and can't wait to see what they do next - lots of atmosphere please!

Great news! I was thinking just the other day that another dull, challenge-free indie puzzle game is exactly what the industry needs.

@HandsomeDead:  Dude I was stoked to hear this news. The same studio that made Limbo made enough cash to make another game? I'm sure there are dozens of small studios that make games that turn out not to be hits and go under, and are never seen again, their programmers hired off to other companies. Maybe you were joking, but sounded kind of douchebag-ish man : /

Limbo was great, but hopefully they do something totally different.  I've had my fill of that game.

Still haven't played Limbo, but I still want to.

#38 Posted by Skald (4367 posts) -

I like Limbo. Still working on finishing it.

#39 Posted by fastkilr (98 posts) -

Haven't played Limbo outside of expos/conventions. Not sure I get the appeal. Maybe I need to play through the whole thing to get it.

Isn't Fable III coming to PC as well?

@MaddProdigy:  My thoughts were the same. I just hadn't thought to call his comment "douche-bagish." That's all the message needed, and maybe it was a tad direct, but he'll get over it.

Who are y-...? No! No, I was just repeating what HE said! How Do You Know Where I Live?!! SPARE ME, YOUR HANDSOME DEADSHIP!!

:)
Anyway, UH UH UH UH UH. Go Giantbomb, with your unremitting dismissal of the Pulitzer Prize.

It's super awesome that everything worked out for these guys and they can keep making cool, innovative stuff like Limbo.

Cheers you two for flying the flag of stupidity for insulting someone who's doing the job he's paid to do.  God, I'm so sick of this idiocy.

Bring Limbo to PS3 and also this new game and they will have some sales from me.

I'm desperate to play Limbo, but I'm not going to buy a console for one game.

#48 Posted by Baillie (4029 posts) -

Can't wait. Oh, hey HandsomeDead... Grow up.

#49 Posted by WerewolfGuy (42 posts) -

I hope they change up the art style. It was great for Limbo, but would get old fast if used in other games.
