Sure, these days have almost every game sporting the newfangled 3D, but way back when, everyone had to live with plain old 2D. 2D, or two dimensions, limit the game to scrolling backgrounds, but some games even now make use of this basic concept. |

This term describes games that make use of music that is mainly instrumental, featuring electronics, inconsistent beat and intended create a relaxing or peaceful atmosphere or mood. |

Checkpoints
A point within the game whereby the game saves its current state whether it be for the purpose of a more convenient respawn point or a gameplay design (such as in racing). |

An action that is sensitive to context. Like going up to something and pushing A(or O in PlayStation games), which would perform a different action than pressing A normally. |

Credits Menu Option
Why wait until you've beaten the game to find out who made it? These games let you see the credits without ever having to play the game. |

Crushing Trap
A trap designed to kill off victims by crushing them. Commonly found in sacred temples though industrial variations (like car crushers) exist. |

Cutscene
A non-interactive sequence within a game most often used for plot advancement. |

Darkness
Darkness is used in games to restrict access, increase tension, or just to set a mood. Often the player has access to a light source that can mitigate its effect. |

Death
The main line of distinction between victory or failure in video games, death is the process of a biological being ceasing to be alive. |

Decapitation
Decapitation is the removal of the head of a person or animal. It can also mean the removal of the head of an organization or political party. |

Digital Distribution is the concept of purchasing digital media via the internet and having it sent to the user directly via the internet. No physical representation of this content is given but the content resides on the users hard drive and is legally owned by them. |

It can also refer to a power wielded by characters that generates sparks, is conductive to metal surfaces, forks or branches, and is often blue in color. |

Faceless Hero
Either through a concealing helmet, keeping the whole game in first person, or using clever camera work, the player character is kept faceless throughout an entire game. |

The opposite of open-ended gameplay, linear gameplay uses scripted events, Quick time events, cut scenes, and a restricted path to tell a story exactly how the writer intends, and control elements of the action. |
