Link: The Faces of Evil

Link: The Faces of Evil is a video game that consists of 1 release

An obscure game developed by Animation Magic Inc. and published by Phillips, Link: The Faces of Evil is considered to be one of the all-time worst Zelda games.

Overview

Released for the Phillips CD-i system in 1993, "Link The Faces Of Evil" was a departure from what had made the other traditional Zelda games a success. Complaints range from the cheesy plot to the difficult controls. While some elements of game play from "Zelda II: Link's Adventure" are present (most notably the side scrolling mechanic), the game was unanimously panned by critics at the time. As Nintendo had no role in the actual creation of the game Nintendo does not acknowledge the events or characters within it to be official cannon of the series.

Gameplay

Link The Faces of Evil plays like Zelda 2: Link's Adventure, but not as smooth because of the controls and the way the CD-i controller was and like Zelda 2 Link goes around towns and places doing stuff to get items that can help him on his quest to save The King and Zelda as well. Controlling Link in the Face of Evil can be an exercise in patience as with the CD-i controller it is nearly impossible to get Link to do what you want him to do and the fact that enemies pop up every time you move on screen doesn't help the game as well and also factor in the enemies are pretty cheap as well will probably make you want to throw the CD-i out the nearest window. Now it's not all that bad, once you get the controls down it isn't that bad, but after playing it for so long you'll get tired of having to do the endless fetch quests and some of them are pretty obscure as well to say the least. But at least unlike in Zelda 2 there are no pits in which you die instantly that's up to the annoying amount of enemies that seem to be coming after you almost all the time.

Plot

The plot in Link The Faces of Evil is pretty simple and straight forward it starts one day with Link saying how boring it is around here and The King tells him "This peace is what all true warriors strafe for" and Link tells him he wonders what Ganon is up to and suddenly a man on a fly carpet rides into the castle and tells the King the Island of Kordia is under attack from Ganon and shows the King and Link a piece of paper saying that only Link can defeat Ganon. This excites Link and Link says he's off to grab his stuff, but the guy on the carpet tells him his sword is enough and before Link goes off he asks Zelda for a kiss for luck, but Zelda tells Link you must be kidding and so Link sets off to stop Ganon and liberate Kordia. In his adventures in Kordia Link meets a colorful cast of characters including a fat shopkeeper named Morshu who will sell Link lamp oil, ropes, and bombs as long as he has enough rubies,a pig that turns people in his slaves,a weird fat woman who wants Link to find something for her, and a guy in a robot who turns people in robots with fire? Finally after all is said and done Link finally faces Ganon in a duel in which Ganon offers Link to join him or he will kill him. So Link refuses and throws a book at Ganon and seals him in it which is the easiest boss fight in the game and after that he rescues Zelda and the flying carpet dude tells Link he did a good job and Link tells Zelda that's worth a kiss, but Zelda just laughs and the game ends.

Development

Being the first licensed games for the CD-i Phillips took advantage of what they had and give the games a low budget of 600,000 dollars for both games and the team that created the first two games consisted of four artists, three programmers and one musician and they were given a little over a year to create both games. The FMVs in the game were created by a team of Russians animators that were flown in to help on the project as well. Even Link's catch phrase from the Zelda cartoon was thrown in as well. The backgrounds in the game were created out of video scenery from Santa Monica Boulevard, footage taken from Hawaii and some of the developers vacation photos. The decision to use the backgrounds took up a lot of RAM and that caused the backgrounds to move slowly and this made the development team mad because they had to use the space they had on the disk wisely.

Reception

Link The Faces of Evil was panned as one of the worst Zelda games made because of the controls and the game play and the basic cheesiness of the game itself and the voice acting is considered to be some of the worst in gaming. What also made the game bad was the fact that the enemies in the game were cheap and sometimes you would die for no reason, but despite all the negatives of the game some praised it because of the artwork and the FMVs were good for it's time and some thought the controls were pretty good, but the music was considered average compared to the main games. A lot of websites have listed the Zelda CD-i games in their lists as some of the worst games ever as well.

Trivia

- The Zelda CD-i games are popular today because of a thing called "Youtube Poop" in which people take various clips of the game and make fun of it in different ways by making the characters saying something they didn't before or just messing up the clips in general.
- Despite being some of the worst games ever the games sell for a high price on E-bay for 100 dollars or more for a copy of the game.
