The Lombax is an animal-like alien, who are nearly all extinct from the known galaxies. Ratchet is the only known surviving member of the species.

In the series, Ratchet is thought to be the only Lombax left in the galaxy. However, in Tools of Destruction, the history of the race is explored deeper. The Lombaxes originated from Fastoon, and were heavily involved the Great War against the Cragmites. After their victory, the Lombaxes were recognised as heroes within the Polaris galaxy. One baby Cragmite survived - Tachyon- and was raised by the Lombaxes. When he was older, he found out about the killing of his people, and in order to get revenge, formed an army to destroy all Lombaxes. Before he could do this however, nearly all of them escaped to a different dimension. Only two remained - Ratchet and his father. Realising the danger they were in, Ratchet's father sent him to Veldin, in the Solana galaxy, for protection. After this, Tachyon murdered his father.
Although Ratchet is the only Lombax to have appeared in the series, in Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando, the character of Angela Cross bears a strong resemblence to Ratchet. However, based on the discoveries in Tools of Destruction, she had to have been a variation of the breed, or a similar race.

In Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time Ratchet finds another Lombax, Alistair Azimuth. General Alister Azimuth was a once-revered Lombax leader, and a friend of Ratchet's father. He also engineered the Court of Azimuth where the final boss battle of Tools of destruction takes place.

He also wields a double ended Wrench and he can fly with his Hover boots.
