The M18 Recoilless Rifle was an anti-tank weapon used by the Americans in World War II. Capable of being fired from the shoulder, it propelled artillery shells at a velocity less than conventional artillery, but at a greater accuracy for hitting enemy armor. Using an innovative system of hundreds of holes on the rifle, the expanding gases helped to counteract the natural recoil of a gun of that size. This allowed the M18 to be fired with very little recoil and a high degree of accuracy.
