Like this, but with more Counter-Strike.

Valve has been hinting at a Mac version of Steam for a week or two now, and just ahead of this year's Game Developers Conference, the company has made it official. The Steam platform, which is a digital sales hub and community for PC games, is coming to Mac in April.

This comes along with news that Portal 2 will be the first Valve product to release simultaneously on Mac and PC. Also, Valve's director of Steam development, John Cook, is quoted in the release with some details about how some of this will work.

"We are treating the Mac as a tier-1 platform so all of our future games will release simultaneously on Windows, Mac, and the Xbox 360. Updates for the Mac will be available simultaneously with the Windows updates. Furthermore, Mac and Windows players will be part of the same multiplayer universe, sharing servers, lobbies, and so forth. We fully support a heterogeneous mix of servers and clients. The first Mac Steam client will be the new generation currently in beta testing on Windows.”

If I may get "sensational" for moment, note that Valve considers the Mac to be "tier-1" but not the PlayStation 3. Burn?

Furthermore, Valve is rolling out something called Steam Play, which is a backend feature that will allow players to play games on Windows or Mac for one purchase price. Again, Portal 2 will support this, along with Steam Cloud, so your saved games will transfer between platforms.

So unified multiplayer servers, simultaneous releases, and the ability to play on Mac after buying a Windows version of the game. Yeah, that sounds about right. A little too right, even. I'm not sure how this will do, since it seems like the whole "Mac gaming" thing comes and goes every few years without making any waves, but this all sounds kind of awesome, provided it has enough developer support to offer the right variety of games.

If anyone has the strength to boost Mac gaming is Valve and Steam.

This sounds awesome, especially simultaneous multiplayer. The idea of playing games on a Mac still feels alien to me though.

I hope I'm reading the bit about Steam Play correctly, and I can my copy of the Orange Box I bought a few years to play Half Life and TF2 on my Macbook without buying them again.

Valve have basically got an open market for them to dominate. They did it with the PC and now they're doing it with Macs.

Back during the Portal ARG some of the GLaDOS files that some people got from the BBS were marked with "not 100% DOS compatible". At the time the theory that this was Valve hinting at a Mac version of Steam was pretty popular but I was somewhat skeptical, I guess GLaDOS really was trying to tell us Valve were going to bringing something to Apple's platform.

Well, Valve does prefer computers to consoles. So it's not completely unexpected that they wouldn't consider the PS3 a "tier-1" platform, whatever that means.

Being able to play the Mac version after having the Windows one?  Thats all I wanted.  Thanks valve.

As for the PS3, I think the Orange Box's debut on the PS3 is proof enough they dont think those who buy a PS3 are the people who care about valves games.  Since they like their god of wars or FF13.  Maybe those who love uncharted though.  Thats I all I have had in my PS3 though...

What I want them to do now is put pressure on developers to give access to the mac version of the game if the user already has it on pc. I'll always prefer to play stuff like Half Life, Left 4 Dead, etc on my desktop pc but it'll be cool to play Plants vs. Zombies, World of Goo or Civ on my MBP but I wouldn't rebuy unless it's dirt cheap.

And it is crazy to me that Portal 2 will be on Mac way before it will ever be on PS3. SICK BURN!

This.  Mac gaming hasn't quite exploded like some thought it would just yet, but I think a big part of the problem is the lack of a unified digital distribution platform for OS X.  This could be what ignites the proverbial powder keg.

@NickL: My understanding is that Xbox 360 development is easier for PC developers to make games for than the PlayStation 3, so PC developers are more likely to make games for that platform. The same thing happened with the original Xbox; PC games were more likely to be ported to the Xbox than to the PS2.

No. Only if there's a mac version, and I'm guessing it'll be on a one-game basis depending on the developer/publisher.

It's good that someone's trying to get decent gaming onto the Mac, because God knows Apple's not even trying. Steam seems to be where things are headed (for the moment) and it would be nice to have a universal system set up for distribution of both PC and Mac games. It might encourage developers to think about the Mac a bit more seriously. Yeah, I know, it's a long shot, but the more the merrier when it comes to gaming.
