By which I mean, a bottle of mace that sprays mini maces, or a mace that sprays mace while you swing it?

Or mace, the stuff that's a lot like pepper spray?

Swing/Spray. Even if you don't get it directly on the person their eyes will be teared.

that would all depend on the size of the bottle.  if it was a giant bottle that sprayed slightly small maces i'd go with the bottle.  the other alternative involves residual damage
