He's the dark wizard waging war against Guardia in 600 A.D.
Magus
Despite being introduced as a villian to the story, Magus proves more than just the bad guy in Chrono Trigger as he helps Crono and the others during their journey in order to destroy the monster that is Lavos. As a character, he is presented as a quiet and very serious person, who dislikes anyone who interferes with his work and those who attempt to spoil to his target. Magus is a unique character in the Chrono Trigger universe as he is not only one of the main villians of the game, but also an optional party member towards the end of the game. In the Japanese version of Chrono Trigger, Magus is called "Maou". The word "Magus" come from another word "magi", It is Latin and can mean: "mage," "magic," and "magician." Magus's Japanese name Maou roughly mean "demon king" in English but this is more likely to be a title rather than a name.Weapons and Techs
Magus uses a scythe as his weapon and several types of magic, as you probably guessed earlier from his name. His magic class is "Dark" according to Spekkio, the Master of War. Magus can do spells from all elements, including fire, water, ice and thunder and without the need for them to given by Spekkio either. As well as this though, Magus' own attacks consist of black magic. Magus can cast Black Holes, Dark Mists, Dark Bombs and even Dark Matter which can prove fatal to the standard enemey and some bosses. So it will prove very wise to take advantage of some of the skills he is capable of.History
Magus was originally known as Janus, the prince of a incredibly civilized society, known as Zeal. In Zeal, we learn that life there depends on magic, something that would eventually lead to the downfall of society itself and something else that would change the course of Janus' life forever. We also learn during this time period that Janus is very close to his sister Schala, who sadly disappears following the events that change the very being of his character. Lavos awakens and destroys Zeal, sending Janus flying into 600 AD and dispersing all those who witnessed the event first hand. It is at this point Janus becomes Magus as he takes the role of dark magician and opposes the Kingdom of Guardia with the Mystics. He would attempt to summon Lavos, hoping that this would be his best chance in defeating the one who changed his life, and Schala's....
