    Overview

Shanghai (known overseas originally as Mahjong Solitaire, then after the original release as Mahjong Shanghai) is a mahjong solitaire game developed and digitally published by SUNSOFT for the iPhone 3G (as a launch title for the App Store) on July 11, 2008. It was later released for the iPad (in Japan as Shanghai HD and in English as Mahjong Shanghai HD) on June 10, 2010 and for Android devices on March 11, 2011. A separate free-to-play version was later released.

The first mahjong solitaire game released on a smartphone, Shanghai is an adaptation of the long-running mahjong solitaire series of the same name and includes 50 different puzzles (in its original release) utilizing the system's touchscreen.

Since its original release, the game received numerous updates and revisions, adding a variety of new puzzles, new game modes (including online multiplayer), and graphical updates. It also received a spin-off, known as Shanghai Amigo.

    Updates & Revisions

    Free-to-Play Version

On October 18, 2013, SUNSOFT released an updated free-to-play version for iOS and Android, which updates the UI and graphics while adding new modes (such as the online multiplayer modes from Shanghai Amigo), new puzzles (including a daily rotation), and microtransactions. This version of the game is still being updated as of April 2021.

    Premium Version

All main premium versions of the game later received their own revamped update on December 20, 2017, adding 50 puzzles (including those based on the arcade versions of Shanghai, Shanghai II, and Shanghai III) and a daily puzzle rotation (bringing the total up to 2000). However, game options are no longer presented in English.

The iPad version also received a two-puzzle demo released on August 3, 2010.

    Other Versions

The game received two special versions:

    • A special Android version (known as Shanghai: 3D Taiou-han) was released on March 22, 2011, only supporting certain SoftBank phones. This version features a rotatable 3D perspective camera.
    • A version for the GREE social media network (known as Shanghai by GREE) was released on May 2011 for both iOS and Android devices.
