Bullet Point Review: Mario Kart Double Dash (GC)
What I liked: Tracks - Although there needs to be more of them, the tracks presented here are really really nice. Double Up- I really like the ability to have two people per kart. That means I'm able to have another person carrying more powerups/goodies. What I didn't like: Cheating - Once you get to the last 2 cups in the 150cc class races, the cheating from the A.I. is just out of control. They'll hit you with anything they have. I can't count the amount of times I was heading down the last stretch in first place only to be bombarded by red/green/Bowsher shells, lighting bolts, etc. It gets a little ridiculous after a while. Short - You could probably finish this Mario Kart in one sitting. Summary: Mario Kart Double Dash pales in comparison to the awesomeness that is Mario Kart DS, but what is here is fine. The only things I'd change is the intensity of the cheating A.I. and I'd make it alot longer. Overall I'd give Mario Kart Double Dash (GC) a 3 out of 5. |

The best Mario Kart Game Yet
Mario Kart Double Dash is the best racing, Mario, and Gamecube game I've ever played in my life. The gameplay is excellent and same with the graphics and sound. And what's good about this game is that you can choose any combo you want. For example: If you can only choose the original combos such as Mario & Luigi or Peach & Daisy, the game would be boring and get a low score. But there is a kart restriction and it's there for a reason. Overall, this game is great. No racing game could beat this one.

A Bold Idea, Well Overdue
With very few installments over the years before Double Dash, Mario Kart is still one of the most recognizable and most anticipated titles to be released each time a new platform is released. The early demos of Double Dash frightened old players by being another Gamecube title to take an old franchise in a very new direction. What came out, however was one of the most exciting multiplayer experiences of the generation.
The standard options are available, ofcourse, Gran Prix, Battle, Time Attack. Many mechanics return, such as collecting items off of the track and competing for the most points out of 4 races. The new mechanic most central to the game, is ofcourse the introduction of co-op mode. Two players ride in one car, with one controlling items and the other controlling steering. The game can also be played with one player controlling both. Concerns that this may complicate the traditionally fun and simple series aren't necessary though, it's just as simple as any other entry. Items are collected either in traditional single boxes, or in a double box, which provides both characters with an item. Characters are switched with the touch of a button, switching items. New items include Bullet Bill, which turns your cart into the bullet itself, which drives itself along the course, knocking other drivers out of the way for a short time, or the Bob-Omb, a thrown item that knocks over drivers in a large area. Each pair of characters has a unique 'Special' item, for example Mario and Luigi get fireballs. The character roster is greatly improved, as is the vehicle roster, which was always just the standard car. More characters, cars and modes are unlocked throught GrandPrix play, with 1 or 2 players. The obligatory Mirror Mode returns, and for the first time ever, the All Cup Tour is presented, allowing all the cups to be played in one large GP. Battle Mode returns with the standard balloon-bursting game, as well as Shine Stealer, where players are awarded points for holding onto the Star as long as possible, and expected to knock it off of one another. The final game is an all-out war with Bob-Ombs being the only available item. Usually ends very quickly! It may not cater to the nostalgic feel of Mario Kart 64 or the original SNES installment, but Double Dash breathed precious new life into the series. The Double-Mode hasn't returned in the installments released since this one, so if you need a fun multiplayer game, and have a Gamecube or Wii, consider Mario Kart: Double Dash. |

Great Multiplayer.
Anyone who has played Mario Kart will either tell you that its stupid and pointless, or that its one of the best multi-player experiences available. I'm one of those people that think its an amazing multi-player gaming series, and Double Dash is no exception. The graphics, while not the best on the Gamecube, are still pretty good in my opinion, and much better than they need to be for a game like this where the sole purpose is chaos and fun. Its also a huge step up from Mario Kart 64's graphics, but I'm sure we were all expecting that given the jump in console generations. The game also hold a very steady frame rate without any slowdown that I noticed. The soundtrack is fun and upbeat. Its not amazing, heartfelt, intense, or moving, but it fits its role nicely and gets the job done. I don't know if I'd want much more from a soundtrack of a game like this. As always with the Mario Kart series, game play is key. Double Dash brings back the winning formula of previous games in the series and throws in a twist, you now have a partner. In my opinion the partner doesn't really add that much but I guess its something that mixes it up a bit and makes it different from other games in the series. There's a whole bunch of new maps, some rival the best in the series so far, while others are kind of dismal by comparison. There's some new items now too, as well as special ones only certain characters can use. There's more characters and way more karts now as well. The multi-player is the highlight, you and your friends will have a blast. The only other thing I could ask for as a game-play improvement is online play. Mario Kart won't give you the best simulation experience ever. Nor will it provide you with cutting edge graphics. But I can promise it will be the most fun you've had with a racing game, and even more so when friends are involved. |
