The first game in the Mario & Luigi franchise, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga (known as Mario & Luigi RPG in Japan) was released for the Game Boy Advance on November 17, 2003 in North America and on November 21, 2003 in Japan and Europe. As with the rest of the Mario & Luigi franchise, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga was developed by AlphaDream and published by Nintendo. The game followed the titular characters, Mario and Luigi, on a quest to recover Princess Peach's voice, as well as the Beanstar, from Cackletta. This quest largely took place in the Beanbean Kingdom, rather than the Mushroom Kingdom. The game was well-received by fans and critics alike, especially for the game's humor. The game's battle system also slightly differs from that of a traditional RPG, with more emphasis on timing and Bros. Moves (which are complicated maneuvers that Mario and Luigi can pull off).

Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time (known as Mario & Luigi RPG 2 in Japan) was released for the Nintendo DS on November 28, 2005 in North America, on December 29, 2005 in Japan, and on January 27, 2006 in Europe. Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time featured the ability to play as Baby Mario and Baby Luigi as well as their older versions. Unlike Superstar Saga, Partners in Time took place in the Mushroom Kingdom. In this adventure, Princess Peach has been kidnapped by a group of aliens known as the Shroobs. By utilizing the past and present versions of the Mushroom Kingdom, the brothers could solve puzzles and progress in the game. While not quite as well-received as its predecessor, Partners in Time was still praised for its humor and gameplay.
