I'm going to sound retarded asking this, but I've heard at least 3-4 different ways of pronouncing Mario, so... please enlighten me as to which way is correct.

Thanks.  That's what I thought, too, but EVERONE says May-Ree-Oh/Merry-O/Marry-O etc.

Is it Wa-rio, or War-io?

You know what? I can't really spell it out phonetically because you might pronounce Ma differently to me. I would say "M-ah-ree-oh" but again you might pronounce "ah" differently.

Basically it's the "British" way of pronouncing it. I say British because most people from Britain that I've heard say Mario the same way as me.

Yeah, it's pronounced just like that. I hate it when people mispronounce his name. I remember they talked about Mario on one of the I Love the 80's shows on VH1. Every single person pronounced his name incorrectly. Very annoying.

How is it the announcer on Super Smash Bros Melee used to do it? Mai-ye-o or something ridiculous considering he said Dr. Mario fine.

I read through this thread, reading the different pronunciations and now I forget how I say it...>.<

People who pronounce it "Mare-e-oh" sounds like they haven't really heard the word 'Nintendo' before. They aren't experienced in video games and are probably old. The "Marr-e-oh" sayers know the difference. This is just based on my own experience as all of the adults i know are prone to the "mare" sound, while all of the gamers use the "marr" sound.

#48 Posted by ThatJustinJames (2 posts) -

#47 you obviously haven't heard of accents before then??
Both merry-oh and mah-ree-oh are correct in their own rights. They are the way it's said in both dialects of English (American and British).
If you want to be 100% correct you would use a real Italian accent, not the fake accent the voice actor Charles Martinet uses.

It's actually more like the name "Maria" is pronounced, being that Mario is the Masculine of it. Phonetically pronounced "Muh-Rio"
Muh as in 'Mud'
Rio as in 'Rio' Grande, Rio de Janero, etc

You are just a dick about it mate and ANY pronunciation different than your own is wrong. Let me guess.... You're American??

#49 Edited by Veektarius (5526 posts) -

@thatjustinjames: You can click reply to reply to people, you don't need to type numbers. Secondly, apparently being a dick isn't exclusive to being an American, based on your perceived need to call him out on an issue of nationality. Third, the pronunciation of Mario (the character) is not up for debate, because he clearly pronounces his own name as of Mario 64. However, 49ers wide receiver Mario Manningham pronounces it differently.
