    Overview

Marvel Heroes was a free-to-play, Massively Multiplayer Action RPG by Gazillion Entertainment in which players controlled heroes from the Marvel Universe. It featured real-time combat similar to that of the Diablo games.

Brian Michael Bendis, most notable for writing Ultimate Spider-Man and the New Avengers comics, wrote the game's main story.

Following the game's one-year anniversary the developers updated the name of the game from Marvel Heroes to Marvel Heroes 2015. It was subsequently renamed to Marvel Heroes 2016, then finally Marvel Heroes Omega before shutting down on November 24th, 2017.

    Development

    Cryptic Studios

Marvel Universe Online, which eventually became Champions Online, was an MMORPG under development by Cryptic Studios and was to be published by Microsoft Game Studios under a license from Marvel. On February 11, 2008 the project was changed due to "an inability to compete" with the current MMO marketplace. Cryptic continued development using a new IP license related to Champions.

    Gazillion Entertainment

On March 17, 2009, Gazillion Entertainment revealed that they had signed an exclusive ten-year deal with Marvel games. Marvel Universe was renamed Marvel Heroes and moved to an action-RPG gameplay style. Marvel Heroes uses the Unreal Engine 3 for graphics and audio.

    Gameplay

Marvel Heroes was an online action RPG where the player pointed and clicked on areas or enemies to attack. As players leveled up they gained points - these points could either be spent on adding more powers to heroes or increasing the strength of their new abilities

Once the player finished the main campaign, they were given the opportunity to play the main story line again from the beginning on a harder difficulty. On harder difficulties the enemies were stronger, but the experience points and rare loot drops become extensively higher. There were 3 difficulty levels: normal, heroic, and superheroic.

Each hero had three separate skill trees to unlock. At level 30, signature powers unlocked and at level 52 the hero's ultimate power would unlock.

As players reached the max level of 60, they unlocked raids and cosmic challenges for a higher degree of difficulty.

    Missions

    Chronicles of Doom

Is a 4-part motion comic that served as a a prologue to the main game's story line.

    Story:

A scene from the motion comic
A scene from the motion comic

Players will have to explore and fight across the Marvel Universe to stop Dr. Doom's evil plans of using the Cosmic Cube for his own selfish purposes. Players fight solo or online against evil organizations such as A.I.M, HYDRA and the Purifiers, and also face off against an array of villains.

Locations in the campaign include the Savage Land, Hydra's Base, Professor Xavier's school, and Avengers Tower, among others.

    Forges of Asgard

    No Caption Provided

The version 2.2 update for Marvel Heroes was the first to add an additional chapter to the main campaign. The new content takes place after the previous chapters, in Thor's homeworld of Asgard. As they travel the land of Asgard, players will find plenty of Thor's allies to assist in quest and combat many of his enemies such as frost giants and dark elves, all while trying to unravel what Thor's evil brother Loki has in store for the heroes.

    Terminals:

Terminals are short levels that allow players to take on the major instance boss fights found in the main storyline. Defeating the boss on green and red terminal will yield the player one cube shard collectible for every 24 hours. The three terminals are broken down by difficulty with cosmic being the most difficult.

    • Green Terminals
    • Red Terminals
    • Cosmic Terminals (Level 60)

    One-Shots

One-Shots are short side story missions contained in the Marvel Heroes universe game. Like the main campaign, they require the player to complete certain objectives to advance through the storyline where they will eventually fight an end boss. One-Shots are found under the terminals tab on the map.

    Current One-Shot missions:

    • Bronx Zoo
    • March To Axis
    • Vibranium Mines

    Challenges:

Unlike the story, the missions found under the challenges tab are quite different. Here you will find gameplay that has been changed up to match player preference. Some missions like Midtown Patrol and Industry City Patrol are level maps that spawn enemies and bosses in an endless cycle usually giving away special loot boxes during special events. Other missions like Shield Holo-Sim and X-Defense are Marvel Heroes take on Horde-mode style missions. PvP and Raid missions can also be found under the challenges tab. Raids and the Cosmic Trial can only be accessed at level 60. Passing the Cosmic Trial on any character unlocks the Cosmic difficulty for that character. Hightown access is granted during chapter 10 of the story, and once unlocked it is available to all characters.
