Ok Mass Effect super fans, put on your thinking caps and go back to when Wrex tells Shepard a story about an Asari Mercenary named Aleena.

For those that don't remember you can watch it here.

    Ok, remember it? Good.
Now listen to this conversation you can have with Aria in Mass Effect 2.

Aria saying things like how shes had a few different names and Mercenary training is one thing, but saying "sometimes you'd rather disappear then be forced to kill someone" and "not even the first Krogen I pissed off" really got me thinking that Aria and Aleena are the same person. And of course she has to end the conversation with, "Better luck next time."

So am I just crazy or do you guys think theres some truth to this?

*Sorry if this is old news, I checked the forums and didn't see anything about this so I thought I'd post it.

Wow! Seems pretty plausible. It's crazy to think that the Mass Effect fiction might actually go this deep.

Hmmmmmm...I guess it's possible. The "better luck next time" does kind of stand out now that I've listened to that Wrex conversation. It wouldn't surprise me anyway. Those Bioware guys are clever fuckers.

My eyes lit up after I heard her with the "better luck next time", because that sealed it for me. Aria is Aleena, and too much of her back story in ME2 matches up with Wrex's monologue in ME1.

Any supporting evidence for your claim besides the simple fact that they have different names? It definitely seems believable to me that someone with a shady past like Aria might have once been known by another name.

no might have about it, she has, and says so.

Seriously, the nay-sayers need to boot up ME2 (like you needed an excuse) and check the dialogue trees again. I swear up and down they're the same person.

Adding in that she herself said she's had different names before, the whole part about rather disappearing than killing somone, the whole not the first krogan she pissed off...then how she said "better luck next time".

    It seems really airtight.

Hard to tell as most Krogan are rather similar as are most Klingons (military) from Star Trek though it's plausible & I personally wouldn't put it past Bioware to do this sneaky weaving of the fiction. If they do this in the 3rd one to weave some characters from that game to the first ME or the 2nd one it'd be a nice treat to fans of the series.

Yeah i'll believe that, wonder if they'll do anything with it in the future? You'll probs find that there are tons of little things like this that are put in just in case they need to expand a little bit of story latter on, either in the form of a sequel or some DLC. Im hoping that we do get to see more of Aria at some stage, thought she was a really interesting character. Also, yeah, nice catch man.

Yeah I noticed a couple other things too, like how that Asari bartender on Ilium is probably Liara's father. I'm curious if Bioware is going to be explained all these subtle nods in ME3 or just leave them to the player's imagination.

Yeah this was brought up about a year ago on the Mass Effect Wikia [Link to discussion], it got thrown out because of the Wiki's rules of no speculation in the Wiki. Aria is around a thousand years old so anything could of happened in her life time.

@wasteguru:  Oh shit man that makes perfect sense I hope it is true. I was hoping to have Wrex or Aria as party members in ME3 and if this is true this will make things pretty interesting. If they don't end up being party members I am at least hoping for some DLC involving the two.

Nice catch. It seems incredibly likely. Too many things match up for it to be a coincidence. Of course, they probably won't go anywhere with it, but it's a cool touch.

It's plausible. Whether it's actually true, who knows. We might never know. It would be rather interesting though, to see Wrex meet up with Aria/Aleena in Mass Effect 3, if this is what Bioshock intended--provided you let him live in the first Mass Effect. Good catch. I wouldn't have never made a connection. Honestly, these games are pretty long, and I don't remember the conversations I've had with the crew members in the first Mass Effect word for word. In fact, I don't recognize the whole Aleena story at all, though it has been a significant while now.

Edit: The more I think about this, the more sense it makes. You know, it's probably true. I read the discussion on the Mass Effect Wiki up there and the guy explains his points in a very convincing way. Here's hoping Bioware will tell us if it's true by including a resolution in the next game (which is coming out in 2011, an amazing fact to me.)

The only reason I never bought the Aleena=Aria thing is because Wrex describes her as "a softie" and caring about things like loss of life.
