You’re not the only victim with a corrupted save file in Mass Effect 2 for the PS3. A handful of other unlucky souls have been reporting the problem since the game’s release earlier this month, and it looks like, thankfully, a patch is hitting soon. Over on the game’s official forums, BioWare acknowledged the problem, used user-submitted data to help investigate, and then announced that a patch will soon be submitted to Sony for approval after its own testing concludes.

But what’s causing the bug? Some sort of “memory fragmentation” that occurs, presumably, as you play the game over the course of several consecutive hours. The simple fix before this patch, if you’re worried, is to save the game and then reset it “every couple of hours.”

    No Caption Provided

== TEASER ==In addition to fixing this nasty problem, the patch will also address slower-than-normal load times and bad level streaming and even address some spelling mistakes. Check out the full list here:

    • Fixed a crash related to memory fragmentation. This fix will also resolve the crashing that corrupted Save Games.
    • Slightly improved load times and level streaming.
    • Added some telemetry to better improve future titles.
    • Updated some strings to fix spelling mistakes.
    • Fixed the picture frame in Shepard’s Cabin to accurately reflect your love interest choices in Mass Effect: Genesis.
    • Fixed a rare crash in the PSN version in Shepard’s Cabin.

I can’t even imagine the pain I’d feel if I were to lose a Mass Effect 2 save file. I applaud those who have the stomach to start all over again and backtrack all those long, long hours.

I don't feel at all for the people who have to play through again. I'm on my 5th playthrough and it's on purpose lol. Played through the 360 version once and the PC version 3 times and am going through it a fifth time since I installed an SSD into my computer and have it running off that now :D

People playing the PS3 version may also want to avoid the Shadow Broker stuff for the time being. A lot of people seem to encounter the bug in that part of the game.

Always, always wait a month before buying a game. Not that I did that, I bought ME2 on release day, but I guess I never played for more than 2 hours or so every time, so my saves are golden.

Good to hear. I thought there was something going on between my male Shep and Kaiden that I didn't know about for a minute there.

Haven't come across this as of yet. So glad they are patching it. Haven't seen the Shepard's cabin glitch yet, and I have the PSN Version. So I'll stay away from his cabin for now. lol

Had no problems first play through, but as I want to start a second I'm glad theyre adding this.  Has anyone else noticed dialogue getting cut off sometimes during conversation?  I wonder if that is a bug or something that was present in the 360 version as well.

I have the downloaded version of the game, and I'm glad I ticked that box to automatically send feedback. I've experienced several of these issues including the Shepard's cabin crash and the stupidly long load times in the elevator (which were non-existant in the PC version).

I have only experienced the long load times. I guess it wouldn't be a bad idea to go ahead and back up my current saves to a USB drive, though, just in case.

That bug really sounds like its sucks a lot since Mass Effect 2 is a game you can crank out marathon sessions.

Pretty sure that if they managed to get rid of the load times, they could delete my save 4 times on the final boss and it would still be quicker than to do it once with the current load times.

Luckily I didn't get this bug yet. I'm 14 hours into it, but never put in more than a few hours at a time. Glad I'm not a marathon gamer...

I lost 30 hours--very annoying.  Basically it looks they rushed the game out in time for Christmas.  Gotta love the result--a widespread error that has screwed thousands of people.  I wonder how many customers they've lost  who will not buy Mass Effect 3  as a result.

I've beaten the game on the 360 (before my 360 died) and was excited to see the port over to the PS3 with the new game engine--however they clearly skipped beta-testing altogether.  If I didn't like the game series already, I would just return the game and skip the next one.

"Good job" to whomever made the call to release the game too soon.  Someone please fire that idiot.  Oh, and I figure that my time spent "beta testing" the game for them is worth at least $10 an hour--so Bioware, you owe me $300.

actually its good that it has issues, because that means the game gets a lot more polishing post-release unlike some other games, like ME1 for PC or 360

The 360 version of ME1 is garbage, the PC however is fine, doesn't really need polishing at all.

I've noticed the game gets buggy if you play it for a few hours and I know the obvious solution is to play it for a shorter period of time but I can't help it, the damn game is so addictive!

@buckybit: Or what about the same thing happening on a 5+ year old system like the xbox 360(Fable 3, if I'm not mistaken. Or what of the many glitches with Fallout 3 if you want another example)? Ask the devs of those games while you're at it. It's less of the "PS3 is too hard to code for" & more of the "put the game out because we want money" mentality of the suits n charge. Then again, there are probably devs that keep using the same broken engine regardless of platform without taking the time to fix it for reasons only known to them. So I've heard.
