Still don’t have Mass Effect 2? Here’s an expensive way to get a free copy of the oft-acclaimed sequel: buy Dragon Age II. In a celebration ending April 30, past and present owners of any version of Dragon Age II can sign up to receive a free digital copy of Mass Effect 2 for the PC. Just head on over to Dragon Age II’s official Web site, hit the rectangular “Get Mass Effect 2 Code” link in the middle of the page, and follow the directions to claim your own.

This is all an obvious marketing stunt that trades exposure for a free game, but to hear Mass Effect and Dragon Age series creator BioWare tell it, this Mass Effect 2 giveaway is simply an effort to reward fans of Dragon Age II since the game has sold over one million copies to date.

There have got to be catches with this, right? Yeah, I've spotted a few small ones. In order to claim your Mass Effect 2 code in the first place, you’ll need to have a valid Online Pass connected to your copy of Dragon Age II. Also, the copy of Mass Effect 2 you’ll receive in return won’t come with an Online Pass, so you won’t be able to access the Cerberus Network (or any DLC) without forking over $10 first. Oh, and also, all of this is done through the EA Store, which isn't the... most popular or solid of services. But otherwise, hey, free game!

I've already played ME2 on 360 but this is sort of tempting...

Awesome!

Neat...?

Anyone with any desire to play Mass Effect 2 has likely already played it and would have no need of this promotion.

#7 Posted by Heavystormdk (51 posts) -

I played it for 360, but I must admit I wanted to try it for PC. And now I got it through this deal. Thanks EA!

Sorry Bioware, still not good enough of an apology for Dragon Age 2. Plus I already got this game off steam for like $5 during one of their sales.

Or people have Dragon Age 2 and not played ME2 would see a need for this promotion.

If it was the other way around, ME2 and get Dragon Age for free, I would pick it up. Even though they are the same company, people might not be familiar with their other game

Mass Effect 2 PC is a good port and I think was sold short by Dave on the podcast when he talked about it last year.  Its interface is actually completely redesigned for the PC, and it controls great!

Any time anyone says that about any game, it's wrong.

Already own it on the PC.

Okay seriously fuck everyone who is making this into a bad thing. You ungrateful fucks.

The "We're Sorry You Bought Dragon Age II" give away.

#13 Posted by Sitoxity (544 posts) -

I got this as soon as I saw the deal. Not skimping out on a free game, even without the Cerberus network. It gives me the opportunity to see how it runs on PC, while all my other playthroughs have been Xbox.

I still think a lot of the complaints about Dragon Age 2 are unwarranted, I loved the first in my brief time with it and I'm loving the second. Both on PC too.

I already own a PC copy of the game, but this is still a great deal for those looking to get Dragon Age II

Already had my way with Mass 2 but I'm curious to see it in a higher resolution.

I already have ME2 for the PC so it's of no use to me, pity they didn't offer DAO as an alternative if you already had ME2 i would have picked that up as i don't have the PC version of that.

Open the EA Download Manager and enter the download code to commence download.

Buy a mediocre game, get an amazing one for free. It would be cheaper to just pay for the amazing one.

#27 Posted by ionkinetic (126 posts) -

Have ME2 on PC and xbox, need PS3 one :P  also, still need to finish it.

Two games that didn't live up to the first.

#31 Posted by Kidavenger (3629 posts) -

I've read that ME2 giveaway does include the cerebus network with a bunch of the DLC

#32 Posted by 234r2we232 (3181 posts) -

Reminds me of those Guitar Hero promotions: Buy this game, get our other game free!

#33 Posted by Gamer_5005 (3 posts) -

I downloaded it overnight.  It looks like it includes the downloads for the free content from the Cerberus Network, but not any of the paid content.  Haven't fired it up yet, but you may have to download the Cerberus Network stuff separately.
#34 Posted by Mr_Skeleton (5156 posts) -

You also get the Firepower DLC for free.

Buy a fantastic sequel, get a fantastic sequel for free - awesome! (Bring on the nerd rage.) Already got it for PC though, so I'll probably post my code for it when I get home.

Wow did DA2 really sell that bad?

#38 Posted by Xpgamer7 (2400 posts) -

eh.

#39 Posted by xatmos (79 posts) -

Hey, it might not be clear, but console versions of Dragon Age 2 are eligible.  So if you have DA2 for PS3 like me you can still take advantage of this and get ME2 for PC for free, even if you already own it for 360 like me...

I think this is awesome.  If EA is going to continue to break down the barriers between the platforms, they have totally won me over.

#40 Posted by xenogamer (19 posts) -

now you finally get a good game when you buy da2.

See, I bought Mass Effect 2 on PC, and didn't buy Dragon Age II; that means I'm cool, right?
#42 Posted by fleethefactory (175 posts) -
Stuff like this blows my mind. Let's complain about developers giving away stuff for free. That'll convince them to keep doing it.

#43 Posted by MrKlorox (11209 posts) -

Nope.

#44 Posted by Skyliner (2 posts) -

sweet, even though i already finished ME2, good find :)

Its the opposite. Its because Dragon Age II sold a million copies.
#46 Posted by xenogamer (19 posts) -

well the point i was trying to make in my earlier post might be taken the wrong way, i meant that if you like da2 then you are a dumb person and  like games that are poop, poop from the butt.

#47 Posted by Korne (625 posts) -

This isnt fan appreciation… fans already own the games. This is just a sale to get people who are on the fence to buy the game. Still a really cool deal, but who does Bioware think they are fooling?

That means we're both cool.
#49 Posted by Kidavenger (3629 posts) -

I seriously doubt they are giving the game away to boost sales of DA2; they are making sure everyone and their mother has ME2, so once ME3 comes out, that many more people will be dying to get it. Good promo.
