i think game spot has not given a 10/10 in past 8 months at least, so it's kinda a perfect score lol

I think that's the lowest score it as gotten so far.  Not unexpected from a site that gave Demon's Souls their Game of the Year Award.

9/10 is a beautiful score.

Fine score for it, my only problem with the review is that they didn't give it their Funny merit.
I haven't seen too much of the game, but I have seen some pretty darn funny scenes.

Which it completely deserved.

Wow you people are pathetic...whining about a 9 out of 10.  Some of you are joking, obviously...but not all of you.  And a moderator no less.

Yeah, they have been in the toilet for a while, but at least they aren't crazy enough to dive straight in out of nowhere and bathe in it like IGN did.
#21 Posted by CitizenKane (10507 posts) -
@handlas: I am more laughing at Gamespot for seemingly always giving a game the lowest score and giving GOTY awards to the video game equivalent of "hipster" and "indie" simply to make themselves look "edgy" or "unique",  mostly out of desperation due to the fact that they lost pretty much all credibility after the fiasco of late 2007.
#22 Posted by Evilsbane (4648 posts) -

Please don't freak out but after watching the video review the 9/10 score doesn't make sense they pretty much called the game perfect why not give it the 9.5 it deserves? But yea...space hamsters, they will make the collectors look like childs play in ME3!!!!

#23 Posted by belaraphon (454 posts) -

9/10 isn't bad. plus, the real review is in the heart of the player.

So MGS4 was "hipster", huh? With a 10 and all?

Could have fooled me.

well you can think what you want of Gamespot, I don't care.  If you played all the nominees and thought it sucked, well that's fine (I don't see your 2009 GOTY list so I dunno what you liked).  But doesn't change the fact that Demon's Souls was just as deserving as the rest of the nominees.  It continually got nominated for GOTY from various sites and got excellent reviews from just about everyone.  Even the game developer awards nominated it for GOTY.

So basically people are whining, here, that Mass Effect 2 got a 9 out of 10.  The same score their 2009 GOTY got.  Just sayin...

@Cube:
I'm assuming he's referring to things like Demon's Souls as GOTY and Trials HD as the best puzzle game. There's nothing wrong with those games, but it seems more like they were chosen so that Gamespot will stand out from the rest and seem like they offer a different and unique perspective than everyone else

so because demons souls and trials hd win 2 awards gamespot as a whole tries to look "unique" or "edgy"? if this were true mgs4 wouldn't have won GOTY 2008.
#28 Posted by MildMolasses (3224 posts) -
@Cube:
I'm not saying that's there MO, now or ever. I"m just saying that they made choices in the 2009 GOTY awards that seemed to have been done more to stand out from other sites.

And again, I'm just trying to offer a suggesting as to why someone would accuse GS of trying to be edgy. I don't in anyway think they aren;t as run of the mill as IGN or GamePro

Early contender for GOTY? I think so. When is the GB review coming. I wanna see brad's rockin' face.

I, personally, thought that Demon's Souls deserved the recognition-however, I do agree with CitizenKane somewhat about Gamespot's 'desperation'. I know what you're talking about, handlas, and I'mma let you finish...but Uncharted 2 is the best 2009 game OF ALL TIME.
 Jokes aside, I still felt, from various information and other things, that Gamespot preferred Uncharted 2 overall to Demon's Souls, it's just that they wanted to be unique.
 On the other hand, I do trust Gamespot reviews somewhat, although they seem to be a bit strange now that they have a 0.5 scale (noticed yet? Why don't they make it out of 20?) so games that are undeserved to be within the league of another game is.
#31 Posted by Spacetrucking (942 posts) -

Oh God, did any of you actually read Kevin's review before questioning his credibility ? 9.0 sounds spot on if you read the written review and have a context. Fun fact: Multiple GS GOTY winners have got 9.0 or LESS!

And fuck's sake, how many times are you guys going to bring up Demon's Souls as some kind of proof for GameSpot's desperation? If anything, whinning about them choosing a great game as their GOTY makes you look desperate. If you're a regular listener of the HotSpot, you could actually see this "shocker" coming. And I also want to know how many of you haters actually played Demon's Souls ? Do you have any personal frame of reference for this game or are you just criticizing GS because it's the fashionable thing to do ? I wonder if you guys are going to be equally shocked if the GDCA does the same thing, and then call out the developers for being "hipster" or "edgy".

Demon's Souls had a 9/10 there, so there is still a chance that this game might be their game of the year.

The way they review games and distribute GOTY awards (and the way those two relate) boggles the mind.

Seems fair enough. I haven't played it myself but 9/10 definatley seems the minimum it deserves. Meaning its still an appropiate score

#38 Posted by Milkman (17008 posts) -

Can we keep the review bickering on the GameSpot forums? I'm sure you people will have plenty to complain about when Brad's review comes out.

#39 Posted by wwfundertaker (1404 posts) -

Expected a better score, but from gamespot i dont expect much.

#40 Posted by ez123 (1967 posts) -

I was going to buy this game no mather what but the review scores are pretty awesome.  The combat and technical issues seem to be gone. Oh, and TWO TITLE SCREENS, if only they had used a different logo for each of those.

#41 Posted by Marz (5658 posts) -

Kevin VanOrd is usually spot on in his reviews, listen to what he says and you actually get a good sense of what the game is all about.   View it without looking at the score and you'll be pretty satisfied.

I would've liked the second title screen alot more had it been like the ending of some of the trailers. With the planet in the background and everything.

Not to say it isn't good, just not as good as it could've been.
#43 Posted by Apathylad (3067 posts) -
@CitizenKane:

I think a 9 is a fine score, as Kevin points out the game has technical issues like bugs. I ran into some technical issues in the first game.

Boy oh boy--some people won't be happy unless you give the game they love an eleventy-bajillionty out of ten. Goodness, folks.
#44 Posted by CitizenKane (10507 posts) -
@Apathylad: I don't care about what they gave it.  I just find it funny that Gamespot seems to go out of its way all the time to try to stand out the pack after its downfall almost  2 1/2 years ago.
#45 Posted by Apathylad (3067 posts) -
@CitizenKane:
With all due respect, I don't think Gamespot is the only one that does this. Xplay gave both Darksiders and Silent Hill: Shattered Memories a 2 out of 5, games that Giantbomb loved.
#46 Posted by MjHealy (1859 posts) -

This is all the more reason why I agree with GB's 5 star scale, doesn't fuel as many petty arguements.

#47 Posted by CitizenKane (10507 posts) -
@Apathylad: I know there are cases that some sites gives games a score lower than what the average is, but ever since the end of 2007 Gamespot has done it at a more frequent rate than any other video game journalism site.

It's a legit score. It means it's very good, but not perfect. Bearing in mind under 1% of you have played it, I think it's justifiable.
#50 Posted by Computerplayer1 (991 posts) -

This should not surprise anyone.

Kevin Van'Ord reviewed it, which means it almost automatically has to be a weird score.
9/10 is good, but it doesn't really match his written review...as usual.

I refuse to watch the video review, not because of possible spoilers, but because I can't stand the inflection in his voice he uses. All his sentences end in the same pitch and it kills me.
