On my first try on the suicide mission almost everyone died. For some reason I had completely missed upgrading the ship. The ending was horribly depressing and I had to give it another try. So after I finished it I loaded it up again, bought everything I could and everyone survived. I'm glad I did that because playing through ME3 with 5-6 characters missing would suck. If I had had one character die or maybe two I would have probably moved on though.

No one died in my play through of ME2 and I didn't use any guides or walkthroughs. That was my experience.
Wont say more then to say- that is not the case in ME3.

this is not your damn blog patrick wtf

don't be a douchebag. Don't read it then

I kept waiting to read some type of "News." Instead, it was just a blog post, which, correct me if I'm wrong, are a thing you can do on this site. Sorry to say, but this doesn't constitute an article Patrick. It's cool to write something up like this, but calling it an "article" is deceptive.

    ar·ti·cle

(ärt-kl)n.1. An individual thing or element of a class; a particular object or item: an article of clothing; articles of food.

    2. A particular section or item of a series in a written document, as in a contract, constitution, or treaty.

3.A nonfictional literary composition that forms an independent part of a publication, as of a newspaper or magazine.

Know what words mean before accusing people of dishonesty.

How did I know someone would pull out a dictionary and pretend like that was important?

If you click on the "News" tab of the website, you get all the "Articles." If you look on this first page, everything that pops up will be an announcement, recent event, or interview. While there are 3,966 results on the site, and I don't want to check through all of them, the first 10 pages of article listings have nothing remotely comparing to what this "article" contained. Ergo, it is deceptive to call a random musing an "Article" given the history of this site.

Oh my fucking tits stop wasting your life getting pedantic about a video game website and go paint some trees or something what is wrong with you fucking people.

Sorry to have burdened you with my thoughts and opinions. I'll try to keep my voice down so as not to bother you in the future.

I'm asking because this post didn't make sense in the scheme of the site. It seems lazy given the way things are traditionally structured and I would like to see the writing and integrity of the site continue, as it is currently 1 of only 2 sites I check on a daily basis. If people just start throwing down opinion pieces and random thoughts into the the "Articles" section, this ends up like Kotaku. (A site which I have grown to abhor.) Giant Bomb should hold itself to a higher professional standard. I'm not mad, just confused.

I never liked Miranda, she was a Cerberus lapdog and I ignored her most of the game, bar her loyalty mission. Come suicide mission I felt I should give her a chance after she stated she could handle the Biotic field, so I let her hold up the shield, she failed to hold it, Garrus died.

Fuck Mirdana and her Daddy issues.

Nice piece. There is a moment in ME3 where my decisions in the heat of the moment along with everything I'd done throughout the series all came to a head and it was surprisingly affecting, perhaps the most affected I've felt from a game.

Then I reloaded the save and got a do-over. Would not want to trade that particular emotional response for anything, but, y'know.. videogames.

@MarkWahlberg: depending on your choice you don't always end up with the party members loyalty even if you do the "loyalty mission". and yeah i agree with your opinion about the way they handled the squad selection in the ending of the game.

@Clonedzero: I don't believe anybody in the comments knows what Patrick, or anyone else for that matter, has or has not been doing. Accusing someone for supposedly wasting time rather than do their job, when you really don't have a clue what they have been doing recently, seems rather low to me.

That image really makes it hit home how much better the squad mate selection is in 2.

When I'm done with ME3, I might play the whole series again, but I know it won't be as compelling as this first, incredible experience has been.

I have to wonder if the ending of 3 will do for you what it did for me - kill any plans to ever play any of the games again. It's that bad. Knowing it ends up at that mess isn't good.

I used to save-scum all the time in videogames until I played Demon's Souls, now I always play games with one save and whatever happens happens. It makes games so much more interesting when you feel like you actually have consequences for the decisions you make, and you learn much quicker from any mistakes you make because you have concrete examples to look back on. I suggest that anybody who meticulously manages their games give this approach a shot on their next game; it is a very fun and liberating way to play.

I have no idea how people can lose characters on that suicide mission. If you have everyone's loyalty (which you should, if you did all of their missions) and you've been paying attention to everyone's strengths and weaknesses, then it's stupidly simple to get through that mission with everyone intact. The tasks you assign to your group have obvious people to select for each one. A tech specialist is needed? Duh, Tali is one of the best tech specialists in the galaxy. We need another group leader? Noone's better than former C-Sec agent, Garrus.

Nice read. I had a lot of people die on my suicide mission. I played it through again to see if I would get a different ending with everyone alive. It felt bad having people die that I've spent close to 100 hours with (ME included.)

I think I only lost Ashley(?) on my suicide mission. I may be confusing the name though :/

Tali and everyone else lived though. So, hooray for me! I guess..

My favorite female crew member was/is probably Tali though.

Having played through ME3 with my ME2 posse fully intact I can't imagine not having Miranda there, since she ends up playing a pretty significant part in a very interesting mission. I really can't imagine Tali not being there for a number of reasons, her level of involvement in ME3 being chief among them. You might want to start over, dude. DO IT AGAIN.

So no, it's not deceptive, and even if it was, what does it fucking matter? So editorial essays don't have a place here?

And on your facile point on how somehow writing opinion pieces makes them more like Kotaku: what? For someone who allegedly abhors it, you seemed to miss the part where the problem with Kotaku isn't that they write about games but don't just write about gaming news, it's that half of their content has fuck all to do with video games, and the half that does is usually shittily written, containing misinformation or being presented in such a way to goad fanboys into giving them more clicks.

I actually beat the suicide mission the first time and everyone lived - and didn't know people could be killed on it until I went on the internet to read about it.  I just picked the most logical choices, Legion is robot, so  I figured he'd be impossible to die in the tubes, Garrus can lead, as can a small handful of others, Samara is the most trust worthy biotic - I guess I just lucked out. Also, I knew never to trust Zaaed with people because all his stories is how HE SURVIVES, and his people die.

@Clonedzero: There are much better ways to go about with your argument then.

There has indeed been a lot of news recently, and a lack of activity from the site. However, I do not believe that beating down on the newest article because it isn't about XBLA games doubling achievement limits or the latest rumour concerning Mario, helps anyone. Criticism should always be constructive.

There is room on a news site for insightful editorials showing in a stream alongside interviews, rumours and reviews and I, for one, see it as a nice change every once in a while. I'll join you in waiting for some new content after this, whatever it is.

I lost no-one in my run. Not cos I looked up how to make it that way, it just happened. I probably got lucky when choosing who to leave to hold up the fort. I took Mordin with me to the final battle otherwise I think he'd have ate it. I always thought the decisions on who to send to fix the computer or keep away the seekers were fairly self-evident. I was 100% Paragon though so maybe that helped?

Anyway, my next Shepard is more Renegade so maybe I'll lose someone this time. If so, I'll probably leave it that way. I'm with Patrick, the weight of consequences is always cool in a game. Although, if I lose Tali, Garrus or Kasumi I'll be pissed.

I was one of those that used a guide to make sure that everyone survived the suicide mission. Do i regret it, only a little. I liked the way my ME3 played out. I enjoyed seeing the people from the past game even if I didn't like them to see what would happen to them. And also hearing about how people's games where different from mine, some minor differences some huge differences, has gave the game a bigger feeling of ownership that what i did had meaning.

Having said that I will go back and play through the series again on the PC. I have the first two games already and once i'm done with those I'll pick up 3. This time though i'm doing the one save mentality. What happens, happens. It's been long enough that I don't remember what choices I made or how I made them and I'm not going to just go for the good guy to get a good ending, I'll do what I would actually do.

I lost Tali and Zaeed on my first playthrough. Everyone was loyal and the Normandy was fully upgraded. I just didn't realise that Zaeed wouldn't be an effective squad leader. I figured him for one because he lead the Blue Suns for years, oh well.

This is why I wish someone died in my suicide mission run through on the first time. Sadly, I got everyone through alive...

I had to try to kill people in my consequential playthroughs.

Argh, I know what you mean. Sometimes artifical characters leave an impression on you that remains unchallenged by any real people.

I had respect for Patrick. Then I read that he would rather have sex with Jack than with Miranda. The beautiful Miranda with an ass that has the record for most polygons in any video game ass to make it that round, with an awesome accent and beautiful black hair. Instead he chose that freak show Jack. For shame.

this is not your damn blog patrick wtf

don't be a douchebag.

Well if you knew anything about the "history" of the site or, frankly, any of the Whiskey Media sites, you'd know that they don't differentiate between news, editorials and previews. So no, it's not deceptive, and even if it was, what does it fucking matter? So editorial essays don't have a place here?

I think Editorial Essays are part of any healthy site's typical churn. I'm not saying there isn't a place for the content.

But, in the last week+ we've seen a relatively small amount of news or interviews. I'm not sure why given that GDC took place last week and that seems like a treasure trove for content. It certainly was on other sites. So, seeing that Patrick is spending his time on something like this is dissapointing. I think Patrick is a good writer and does good reporting. I want to see those skills put to use to create quality content. If he wants to write up something about his ME2 experiences leading to ME3, that's great, but that seems like something he should be doing on his own time for fun. Hence, a blog post. This isn't up to snuff for Patrick or the site.

The only person who died on my first playthrough was Kelly, and it fucked me up, considering the way she dies. But I made a second playthrough later on and got the perfect ending.

    Patrick bitching about shit again?

If you don't want the consequences of Mass Effect 2 inform what happens in Mass Effect 3, how about not importing the save file and start from scratch instead of moaning about how some miraculous way, the sequel bares some form of consistent logic to what happened in the prequel.

I lost Jack, who I never cared about. So all in all I was perfectly fine with the consequences. The choices were fairly obvious. The only one I wasn't sure about was who to send back with the normandy crew, so I picked the one person who I didn't care if I lost or not. When I replay the series again after finishing 3, I'll still probably make the same choice so that I get the same result as when I went in blindly. Doesn't feel right going in knowing how to save everyone.

@BrockNRolla: Don't like it?(Rhetorical) Then read a couple of sentences, find out you don't like it, and close the tab.

    It's that simple.

Quit typing out reams of paragraphs bitching about it.

Did I know there wouldn't be news in there? Nope. How could I? So I kept reading and looking. If it said "Blog Post," I probably wouldn't have started in the first place.
