so i just got this game for Christmas which was great timing with all the DLC going on sale.  but my question is when should i play it? should i wait until after my playthrough? or just do them right away to get any of the extra guns and stuff?

Definitely after the playthrough. I know for Lair of the Shadow Broker, specifically, Bioware has stated that it was designed to be played after the main story was finished (represented through dialog and such). Except for Kasumi (the lady thief) and all of the others, I recommend doing Overlord and Shadowbroker after your playthrough.

Any time you want. The combat scales, and if you don't mind breaking the urgency of STOPTHECOLLECTORSRIGHTNOW, everything slots in pretty well to the story. Furthermore, getting Zaeed and Kasumi right away means you can use them more, if you want to.

I haven't played Shadow Broker yet, but for all the other DLC, I 100% agree with Cornman89.

You should play the DLC as you play the main game - when it comes to Liara finish her missions on Illium -before- you tell her you have information on the Shadow Broker otherwise these missions will be skipped and there is no way to replay them (it's only one or two quick missions but all the same it makes more sense if you do them first).

Kasumi and Zaeed should be done during the story. Then play Overlord and Lair after the story.
Just do the other stuff when you want.
Edit: In my Insanity run I went and got Zaeed and Katsumi before anything else, but that is because I think Kasumi fits well with my play style.

Do them in between, not after the game is done.

I did all of them during my playthrough except for Shadow Broker (which seemed to fit since Liara mentioned that I already beat the Collectors in it).
