It was popular, intelligent, nerdy, cool, and damn fun.
Mass Effect 2
Game » consists of 21 releases. Released Jan 26, 2010
After a violent death by an unknown force and a timely reanimation by the human supremacist organization Cerberus, Commander Shepard must assemble a new squad in the seedier side of the galaxy for a suicide mission in the second installment of the "Mass Effect" trilogy.
Who else thinks this is the one to take home most of the awards?
For Jeff maybe. A lot of better games came out since then though. </opinion, try to resist posting a vapid meme boys>
Starcraft 2 will probably clean up the most, I feel like Civ 5 won't get its due. RDR will probably take a few awards. ACB could be the sleeper hit of the year. I guess for goofy sites that have a million awards so they can give something to everything, ME2 will get a lot. And for sites that stupidly ignore PC games.
I think the spread between Mass Effect 2 and Red Dead Redemption is way closer than we're giving it credit for being. While I do think Mass Effect is probably going to win the Game of the Year award, I definitely don't think it's going to saunter into the place and take shit like a forgone conclusion.
I haven't actually played ME2, but based on the reviews and how awesome ME1 is, I wouldn't be surprised. But Red Dead was also pretty fantastic.
" @valrog said:Some, yes. But going into extreme (Everything seems like this is most likely the case) like GT did with Modern Warfare 2 is pathetic and not even this being an opinion is a rational way to defend it." Most of those rewards will be undeserved and pure bias, so... "An intriguing comment. Do you suppose there is a way to hand out awards for quality to games without bias playing some role in the process? "
Black ops should be rated as what it brings to the table thats new, i mean i thought Modern warfare 2 was awsome but black ops had nothing new. I love mass effect, finished it like 4-5 times, but i do hope SC2 gets the majority of awards, but ofc ME2 MUST get RPG.
It's a big maybe for me. I still can't decide whether I prefer Red Dead Redemption, Super Mario Galaxy 2, or Mass Effect 2.
Mass Effect 2 was certainly my favorite game of the year, but in one of the most lauded years for games in a long long time, I suspect we'll see a broad breadth of what takes various outlets GotY awards, largely based on what the various interests and focuses are. I could see good arguments for Red Dead, Starcraft and AssCreBro, and certainly other outliers like Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Heavy Rain could be vote-busters. All in all, can't wait for the various year-in-review retrospectives to come out, with Giant Bombs yearly deliberations on the top of my "can't wait" list.
I think they made a brilliant game and it probably will win GOTY most places, but it does have worthy competition. The main problems with ME2 for me are that it totally fails at being a second act, and that the best parts of it come when you aren't actually doing anything. I think AC:B (which I haven't finished yet, so take with a pinch of salt) could and should be better than it is in a lot of ways, but it could still take it from ME2 just because the high points come when you're playing the game, rather than when you're watching an entertaining cutscene.
It will no doubt win most of the awards but I think the game has some problems on the overall story stuff, there was a good article describing now the start, middle and end were bad and the rest of the game was amazing. It pretty much matched how I felt about the game. It is great but I feel like they made a few irritating missteps. I would probably put it up there with RDR and I would say it will also get a good few awards.
After finally buying the game and starting my trek towards the end, I'd say that it better be winning most of the awards.
I hope that when people start seriouisly considering game of the year and the like, they'll consider that mass effects 2 story was not that good. A fetch quest for some good teammates and a final confrontation is not as epic as bioware seems to think.
The gameplay was solid, as was the world they've built but i don't think its great enough to give game of the year too
But you're ignoring all of the great side missions." I hope that when people start seriouisly considering game of the year and the like, they'll consider that mass effects 2 story was not that good. (I can't comment on the final boss since I'm not finished yet)
I feel that it'll get a decent amount of the awards it's nominated for. Most of the awards though? No, but a good amount.
Hopefully at least.
I'm intrigued by those that think SCII will get a lot of awards- it's fairly 'niche' in the sense that the genre appeals to fewer people than the other big ticket releases this year. I know it sold a bajillion copies, but it's not such a huge game in the Western market (where most GOTYs are decided). VGA's (yeah yeah, blah blah VGA bias suck blah) haven't even shortlisted it for its GOTY, if that means anything. Alan Wake, as good as it is is also a real outside shot, selling minimal copies and getting a pretty lukewarm critical reception compared to how much it was hyped.
On a more on-topic note, I sure hope so. Mind you, I think it'll be a fierce split between RDR and ME2. My vote goes to ME2 for many reasons, not least due to the fact that Zaal'Koris vas Qwib Qwib made me laugh far more than it should.
Undoubtedly, ME2 will garner many awards and it totally should. However, since it was released so long ago, it will suffer from that on many awards lists. That and many sites really loved RDR, and the evolution of R* games from that game cannot be denied. SCII deserves all the attention it'll get too...as it's widely acknowledged as the best ever in it's genre.
But for me, no game felt as state-of-the-art as ME2 did. Also, it was just as fun upon replay using morality and build differences, as the initial playthrough...rare business indeed.
Not necessarily. I think it's fine to have a simple structured story with diverging side paths to mix things up. It's just another way of doing things, and I think it works perfectly fine." @JJWeatherman: I played through almost all of the side missions, even downloaded the shadow broker dlc, and those missions are fun. But, just like with fallout 3, if the main quest isn't as fun as the side missions i think theres a problem "
