If you're not familiar with Clint Mansell, he's done the score for pretty much everything Darren Aronofsky has ever done and did a great, haunting score for Duncan Jones' "Moon" which would fit right into the Mass Effect tone.

According to IGN he's signed onto do the music for ME3!

I could not be more excited for this score!

Great! Now, who are these Clint Mansell and Darren Aronofsky people?

#3 Posted by Carlos1408 (1254 posts) - 2 years, 3 months ago

Sounds awesome I've got all the music for both mass effects, I'll probably be getting the music for three too. :D

@MooseyMcMan: Aronofsky is the director of Requiem for a Dream, Black Swan, The Wrestler, and The Fountain - Mansell composed the scores for those movies.

Mansell is one of the best composers today. This should be amazing.

#6 Posted by GlenTennis (3128 posts) - 2 years, 3 months ago

I just posted this, you beat me by 2 minutes.
Anyway, this is fucking amazing news, Clint Mansell is my favorite film composer peroid. If you haven't seen "Moon," his soundtrack in that is amazing. Here is the main theme from it.

I wish they would bring back the duo of Sam Hulick and Jack Wall.

@ztiworoh: Great! All movies I have never seen. I'll just take your word on him being good at crafting music.

Now, have they said anything about the credits song? I want that band what did the ME1 credits song to do the credits song for this one. Faunts, I think? The only thing I know them from is the ME credits.

#10 Posted by mazik765 (2284 posts) - 2 years, 3 months ago

Now the real question is does this man have any relation to Nigel Mansell? Because I hear that guys a jerk...

#11 Posted by GlenTennis (3128 posts) - 2 years, 3 months ago

I forgot, he also did Lux Aeterna, AKA that song that you hear in every trailer ever.

#12 Posted by withateethuh (726 posts) - 2 years, 3 months ago

This is pretty fucking ridiculous. I'm totally okay with it.

Holy fucking shit! This is major news! It's crazy!

#14 Posted by Ace829 (2082 posts) - 2 years, 3 months ago

And now my boner for ME3 is enlarged. Awesome news.

#15 Posted by Damodar (730 posts) - 2 years, 3 months ago

Awesome, Mansell will fit the game perfectly

Nice.

#17 Posted by ryanwho (12083 posts) - 2 years, 3 months ago

Seems kind of beneath him but I'm always down for owning another Mansell soundtrack.

#18 Posted by salad10203 (648 posts) - 2 years, 3 months ago

Moon was wierd...

#19 Posted by Bribo (486 posts) - 2 years, 3 months ago

Moon was brilliant.

When I think about hearing something like this while playing ME3 I get really happy.
#21 Posted by NTM (6419 posts) - 2 years, 3 months ago

I liked his music in Moon and that's about it. I'm not a huge fan of his music, but I still think he can pull it off for ME3.

There not bringing back Jack Wall? I'm curious why, since he did a fine job on the first 2 games. They also didn't use my Daft Punk idea ether, something I would have loved to have happen.

I'm not really familiar with Clint Mansell's work. I may have to go check it out.

#23 Posted by Napalm (9020 posts) - 2 years, 3 months ago

This doesn't really impress me. Jack Wall was doing some truly amazing stuff with Mass Effect 2's score, especially when you look at where Mass Effect's music was, (not that it's bad, but it is very different than Mass Effect 2). I'd rather have either Jack Wall back in the saddle, or picking up the DLC composer Chris Lennertz.

Man, the sounds of Mass Effect are Jack Wall's fucking baby. He fucking made those songs. Uncharted Worlds from Mass Effect? The Illusive Man's theme from Mass Effect 2? They need to bring Jack Wall back as a consultant for this score, or something. I hope they had him go back and listen to the OSTs from the first two games to get a feel for what kind of sounds, cues and music are from this universe. All I'll say if there are no electronic elements present in the score for 3, I will be really disappointed. And by that, I mean if it's 100% orchestral. There were less in 2 than in the original, but they were there and when they hit, they fucking hit hard, like in Jack's theme, and the total Blade Runner worship in Mordin's theme.

But yeah, Jack Wall has a very specific rhythm his music plays out in. When you hear a Jack Wall track from this universe, you instantly know it's his.

@Napalm:
Clint Mansell is like the best working composer in film today but yeah, there's something to be said for consistency. Unless ME3 is all about contemplating god and the melodramatic horrors of spacedrug addiction Clint's music might be a bit too heavy for a universe that rarely takes itself seriously for more than a minute at a time.

Clint Mansell is a great composer but I don't want violins in my Mass Effect.

#26 Posted by General_D23 (1201 posts) - 2 years, 3 months ago

Well, this came out of nowhere. Awesome!

I hope Jack Wall isn't entirely sidelined, though.

#27 Posted by Brendan (6738 posts) - 2 years, 3 months ago

As usual, the first exposure to Mass Effect is met with a little skepticism, but as the updates continue to trickle in it just gets better and better.  Fall 2011 can't come fast enough.

I would have loved to see what Hans Zimmer or Vangelis will do to Mass Effect.

#31 Posted by tranquilchaos (566 posts) - 2 years, 3 months ago

Fuck this news. Jack Wall is far better.

#32 Posted by JoyfullOFrockets (1174 posts) - 2 years, 3 months ago

I think this guy is going to be a little too overkill. Still, eargasms inbound.

Sounds somewhat Trent Reznor-esque.

The music from the first Mass Effect was just perfect, but after hearing just a couple songs by Clint Mansell, I'm ready to hear what he can do for ME3.

I don't agree that Mass Effect doesn't take itself seriously, unless your talking about the practicality of everything, which is obviously suspect, considering the period.

But anyway, I'm getting seriously peeved at all of the 'tards here and over at the BioWare forums that keep posting the same four goddamn theme songs from Clint Mansell and being all, "OMG jizzjizzjizz!1"I'm starting to think it's a bunch of you circlejerking each other because you cream at the sound of Requiem's theme song.

This track blows all of his other shit out of the water, and it's actually unique and ridiculously powerful:

I wouldn't mind an OST that incorporates those melodic elements. Ugh. So good. I'm getting considerably less irritated at this guy doing the score.

@Napalm: Y'know what's cool?  Berating and insulting other people in your posts.  You seem like a pretty cool guy, keep it up.

Only those personally offended would have responded to that. Posting overused themes isn't a way to sell me on a composer on a videogame. Oh sorry, I thought this was common sense.

Most of the themes posted from Clint Mansell are relatively generic, anyway. There's a whole lot of expected generic violins and piano action. Yeah, it's emlodic and emotional, but it's all expected and relatively uninteresting. Most of the gems you'll find are those one-off tracks nobody posts, like the one I posted, and since you probably missed the point of my post, I'll post this again in this post, and hopefully you won't get all up in arms again when you get your postin' on:

It looks like I won't just be muting the music in 3 to be replaced with my own.  Clint Mansell is fucking amazing.

#41 Posted by Gnorbooth (232 posts) - 2 years, 3 months ago

I like Clint and all...

But Jack Wall has been making some fucking banging music for the series so far!!!  So I'm sad to see him not returning for the final part.

#42 Posted by iizcallum (600 posts) - 2 years, 3 months ago

Awesome, he's probably one of my favourite film composers. Great news.

#43 Posted by NoCookiesForYou (654 posts) - 2 years, 3 months ago

Honestly, can't say i've heard his work, but people seem to be flipping out so i guess he's pretty good.

10months till the end of '11 and now they only hired the composer?!!?

#48 Posted by Fjordson (2437 posts) - 2 years, 3 months ago
@Napalm:  I like Clint Mansell's scores quite a bit, but I agree. Jack Wall laid down some amazing tracks for the first two games. Love the icy, classic sci-fi vibe to them. I'm sure Mansell is more than capable of coming up with an appropriate, I just hope it doesn't end up a bit too heavy handed.
#49 Posted by easthill (351 posts) - 2 years, 3 months ago

Wow, this is awesome news. Love Mansells scores - I think he'll be more than able to make something to fit the Mass Effect universe.

As much as I loved Jack Wall's OST for ME2, this is awesome news! Clint Mansell is one of my favorite composers!
