You may not be done with the Reapers yet, despite Mass Effect 3 having ended twice now.
You may not be done with the Reapers yet, despite Mass Effect 3 having ended twice now.

It shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, but this week’s Extended Cut downloadable content for Mass Effect 3, which adds new sequences to the game’s ending and epilogue, will not be the last time BioWare will ask you to turn on Mass Effect 3 again.

"Would now be a good time to talk about how we're doing more DLC in the future?” said Mass Effect producer Michael Gamble on Twitter last night. “That was a trick question. We'll save the future DLC for future chats. Don't worry though...there's much more.”

It appears we may already know what the (first?) downloadable content is about, too. An inquisitive user on the BioWare message boards looked into the data featured within the Extended Cut, and found evidence of a new mission related to Leviathan, which appears to be a dormant, rogue Reaper mentioned in both Mass Effect and Mass Effect 3.

    Hmm.

Neat, I guess. My insane quest to S-Rank all these Mass Effect games means I will play the DLC, no matter what! I hope it's good, and affordable.

I might play it. I dunno, I love Mass Effect, but either the ending or the furore around it (I can't even tell which) sucked all my passion away.

This Gamble chap also said the Extended Cut wouldn't be just a bunch of cutscenes. There's gonna be more DLC, everyone knows that, but honestly take anything he says with a grain of salt.

@mpgeist: Technically he was not wrong even though there were extra cutscenes there were also added disposition between Shepard and the Catalyst.

I'm going to guess there's going to be at least 3 or at most 5 single-player DLC. Probably a couple more multiplayer packs.

It'll be harder to want to go in and play stuff before the ending since we already know how it ends, but I love playing Mass Effect so I'll probably get them if they look good.

@MooseyMcMan: To S-rank ME1 I'd have to 100% it two more times, and I just don't have the heart to do those sidequests. I can't S-rank ME3 due to online related achieves also. I'll always have ME2 s-rank though.

I wonder, for a game that people will probably replay some time in the future, as part of a series that is finished... is there ever a point at which more DLC will not recoup its expense? It may not pay for itself in a day or two, but over the years, people will revisit Mass Effect and say, "Let's see what that DLC was, while I'm at it."

What can they really do with single player DLC? It could take place before the end, but thats kind of lame since it won't really add anything, or they could have you play as a different character after the end, but thats kind of lame too. With how final the ending felt, I just don't see any narrative reason for DLC. I know I'll buy it and more than likely enjoy it, I just think the trilogy should end with the EC.

I finished the extended cut last night and I was fine with the original ending and this edition does give you some more information and does a slightly better job at telling an ending. As far as DLC goes I don't know if I'd go back to the story anytime soon. As long as they keep putting out more character packs I'll keep playing MP. Plus I don't have the 800 MS points to pay for the story mode DLC.

They already confirmed all future DLC will take place before the end of the game. So yeah.

The extended cut was diabolical. I had to get my Galactic Readiness back up after being 100%, which neatly puts you in the position to buy more mp packs (luckily, I resisted).

Though I was reminded again that damn, the game's fun. The shooting mechanics are alright, but the powers and easy squad stuff just makes the combat unique.

@AlwaysBeClothing: I'm pretty sure all the multiplayer achievements in ME3 also have a single player way to unlock (ie, Reach level 15 in multiplayer or level 50 in single-player.). Biggest problem is probably the From Ashes DLC, if you don't have that.

It'll be interesting to see where this goes, they left the breathing scene in the Extended Cut, even after placing Sheps name on the casualty list, which makes me think they obviously plan to continue using her in some capacity. It'll probably be another game or story that implies that you got the perfect ending and didn't sacrifice yourself to control or synthesize. All I can say is, THANK GOD they made the Indoctrination Theory people shut up about the plot holes in the ending.

Oh Cool. I was wondering if they were ever going to answer the question of what the Batarians had done with their BILLION year old dreadnaught sized organic ship/artifact. Most assumed it was just a nod to Farscape, but there just seemed too much there to just be an inside joke like DC1938 (ie Superman), and it seemed like a plot thread for something.

I for one would love to once again crawl inside a Reaper, maybe this one isn't genocidal?

I love Mass Effect, and was actually kinda alright with the ending, but I really can't think of anything they can do with DLC. I mean, they can't even do what they did with say, Dragon Age Awakening and just have some leftover reapers or something because of how closed the ending was. I guess I'll get it when I play through the series again, but Mass Effect content without any consequences really isn't that appealing to me.

While BioWare are capable of making good DLC (Shadow-Broker, for instance), most Mass Effect DLC was pretty boring. I really didn't care much for Kasumi or Arrival or Overlord or any of the paid DLC I got for ME2. Shadow Broker was the only one I really liked - I brought the others only because I knew that ME3 would somehow recognize if I had brought the ME2 DLC.

But since there's not going to be a ME4 that is related to ME3 in any significant way (there will be new Mass Effect games, but Shephard's story is DONE), I'm not sure if I want to bother. I'll wait for reviews. If it turns out to be as good as Shadow Broker, I'll buy it. If it doesn't, count me out.

It was answered in ME3 if you didn't kill the guy from Falling Skies DLC in 1.

It indoctrinated all the Batarians and shut down their defense grid, that's why they were so easy to take out in the beginning of ME3

There are two things I would love to see played out.

The first is a sequence on Earth, following Anderson around and play out how he ends up in London before Shepard arrives with help. The second, the retaking of Omega from Cerberus.

@AlwaysBeClothing: There are no multiplayer only Achievements in ME3. All the ones that involve multiplayer have a single player alternative to unlock it. For example one achievement is to get to lvl 20 in multiplayer OR lvl60 in singleplayer.

@AlwaysBeClothing: Ah, right. I just used the iPad app (ME Datapad or whatever it's called), There is a Galaxy at War 'game' that you can use to increase your readiness. It's kind of like the minigame in Assassins Creed Brotherhood, where you send off your resources to do missions and a certain amount of time needs to pass before they're available again. With everything upgraded, it took about 20 minutes spread over a couple of days to go from 50% back up to 100% (just did it recently for the Extended Cut release).

There's just no way it's going to get GOTY anyway, except for most disappointing. I think it's a great game with a shitty ending, but the Bombcasts about it were just bitchy hate-fests. Not gonna happen, bro.

IT theory or not, I still want to see where this story goes. I do believe in the theory, so I really want to see what is going on when Shepard wakes up, because we really didn't get an ending. Sooooooo many unanswered questions. Besides, the gameplay is enough to make me stick around.

I'm really interested to see what the folks at Bioware have in mind. Hopefully they punch out something a bit more substantial than an hour long mission. Either way, looking forward to it.

A few things I hope would happen is the retaking of Omega from Cerberus. We find out if Zaeed caught Vito. We find out what happened to Mess Sergeant Gardner. Blasto the hanar Specter becomes a DLC character. Bioware releases another DLC character that uses Anderson's character model. Give him a facial scar and tattoos. Then call him Raheem -- a Cerberus defector who became a mercenary.
