"ONLY DISC 1 AVAILABLE. DISC 1 INCLUDES THE FIRST HALF OF SINGLE PLAYER GAME AND THE MULTIPLAYER PORTION OF THE GAME."

http://www.redbox.com/games/max-payne-3-x360
Why even make it available?

#2 Posted by CollegeGuyMike (388 posts) -

Aww, man. :( That's really unfortunate.

You could always get the PS3 version, if that's an option though right? That should all be on one disc?

#3 Posted by AssInAss (2523 posts) -

Wait, what?! "First half of single player game" HAHA!

So Max Payne 3 is as long as an RPG now?!

I've never heard of something like this.

Dead Space 2 was an action game and it was on 2 discs; Rage's campaign was on two discs with the multiplayer on the third.

Whoah, really? Were the graphics and cutscenes that good? How long was the game, I remember Dead Space 1 being around 10-12 hours.

So if I don't plan on renting it from Redbox, I should?

#8 Posted by BBQBram (2198 posts) -

@Video_Game_King: One does not imply the other. That's not how logic works.

@CL60:

That's really dumb. Was this Redbox's decision or the publisher's demand?

#10 Posted by Zidd (1836 posts) -

it could stop assholes stealing games from the redbox and selling them on craigslist.

#11 Posted by TMThomsen (2070 posts) -

@AssInAss: The size of a game has absolutely nothing to do with its length.

My guess is that it is a technology/logistics issue of trying to deal with multiple discs for one game rather than an anti-consumer issue on the part of either company.

Look, when you're using Alice in Wonderland to learn Japanese, logic gets thrown out the goddamn window.

Dead space 2 was a slight bit shorter, actually, but it included a multiplayer. Yes, DS2's graphics were damn good looking as far as I'm concerned; the space areas and set pieces were particularly good looking and massive.

Now that I've mentioned a multiplayer, I should note something: Dead Space 2's campaign actually includes more content because it has very little backtracking, as compared to the first game which was a backtracking extravaganza. There are more environments, more areas, more variety, etc., which contributed to its shorter length yet larger size. It's a 9-11 hour game instead of 10-12, but a better 9-11 hours.

You'll have to go with the PS3 version. I wonder why Redbox aren't offering the second 360 disc.

This. Redbox does not normally rent multiple disc games. They only carried games like Mass Effect 3 and Rage for PS3, not 360. I assume that Max Payne has no online pass and this rental is for people interested in playing multiplayer. The alternative would be to not make it available at all.

So what happens with the other discs? Do they just sit in a warehouse somewhere?

Their system is probably setup for one disc per rental.

I wonder if more games will do this on purpose to hurt rentals?

I've never owned a multi-disc'ed game aside from FF VIII, so that might be it.

Good question. At some point, when the game is old and no longer being rented they'll likely be sold at some clearance outlet somewhere. A long, long time ago in the young days of recorded history, the early 2000s, Netflix sold discs that were just taking up space on sites like half.com. Of course they didn't come in cases with their original artwork. It's possible that Netflix threw that away when they stocked the movies originally. I have no idea what Redbox does. If they just used generic cases for old games they couldn't sell Max Payne without that second disc.

#24 Posted by Village_Guy (2476 posts) -

This raises three question for me...

1. Who the hell thought it was a good idea to only have the first disc?

2. Who rents games from Redbox?

3. What happens to all those other discs? Do they have a warehouse full of Max Payne 3 Disc Two?

Redbox game rentals = pick up at 10 AM Saturday, return 9 PM Sunday, pay $2. There are plenty of single player campaigns you could blow through in a weekend for cheap if you wanted to. 1 & 3 have been addressed in this thread.

#26 Posted by Village_Guy (2476 posts) -

@louiedog:

Fair enough. It just seems really odd to only have disc one and not disc two...

#28 Posted by Clonedzero (4036 posts) -

@TMThomsen: uh yes it does. it has everything to do with it. sure a short game can be a large filesize and a long game can have s small filesize. but the size and length are directly related.

#29 Posted by Mikemcn (6936 posts) -

That sounds like a redbox limitation rather than them trying to screw you over.

#30 Posted by smitty86 (697 posts) -

@louiedog: $2?!?!?! I may have to mail you some money for your information. I really should have looked into Redbox by now...

#31 Posted by Rmack (1073 posts) -

Seriously, Redbox is great for games you can finish in an afternoon. I had no interest in MW3 Multiplayer, so I finished the campaign day one and brough it back day two. 2 bucks well spent. Don't know why some people are giving the service a bad name.

#32 Posted by MrSlapHappy (178 posts) -

So what you are saying is that for $2 bucks you can play the first half of a brand new AAA game and you are outraged? Fuck dude, you can't even get a sandwich for 2 dollars... Who would have thought some sort of mysterious, fly-by-night, discounted service of this nature would cut corners to purposely stiff the customer, those bastards!

If it makes you guys feel any better, Gamefly counts multiple disc games as a seperate rental. They did that for FF13 and LA Noire.

The older games where pretty long IIRC. That was back in the days before we paid $60 for a shitty 4 hour single player and a shitty multiplayer game.

Ahh the good 'ol days!

Shoutouts to the system making an oversight.

#41 Posted by xyzygy (9866 posts) -

So exactly WHAT are they doing with the other discs? It's not like they can use the excuse that they need them for other copies... you need to play the first disc first. Weird.

Your statement is contradicting itself.

Will I make a game longer if all textures are 4096x4096 .BMP files and all music/sound are .FLAC files?

#46 Posted by Clonedzero (4036 posts) -

@TMThomsen: if you use more of them, thus making the game longer, then it increases the file size. yes you can change the size of the files by changing the actual files. but regardless. if you have more of a type of file it will make that total file size bigger.

if you have a short game with all 4096x4096 .BMP files and all flac files, it WILL BE SMALLER than a LONG game with all 4096x4096 .BMP files.

how is that even remotely hard to understand? the bigger something is, the bigger it is. a 2 year old could figure that out. it is absolutely a variable in the total size of the game

#47 Posted by agentboolen (1749 posts) -

At this point its just a really long demo!

This ^

Also Xbox HD dvd's have long been outdated, 8.5 gigs isn't that much space.

You still can't estimate how long a game takes to beat by looking at its size. Rage for instance takes around 10 hours to complete, but it requires 20+ GB of HDD space simply because of its huge textures.

#50 Posted by Brodehouse (9515 posts) -

"Only RPGs are long enough to require multiple discs" is super funny. Especially considering how old DVD is.

Call of Duty would require 12 CDs. Longer than Final Fantasy 8!
