No more "smelly cheese" face?
I really enjoyed the previous two Max Payne games. The series places you in the shoes of the hard-boiled, scrunchy-faced, down-on-his-luck detective, Max. It's a dark tale, told in a gritty, noirish fashion, that follows Max's ever-quickening separation from humanity. Now, with a new "more world-weary and cynical" Max Payne slated for release in "Winter 2009," it's hard to imagine how Rockstar, the series' publisher, can find a way to crush our poor anti-hero's soul any further.
"This is Max as we’ve never seen him before, a few years older, more world-weary and cynical than ever. We experience the downward spiral of his life after the events of ‘Max Payne 2′ and witness his last chance for salvation." - Sam Houser, President of Rockstar Games.
Man, poor Max. I thought the guy was at the end of his rope by the end of the intro in the first game. I'm very curious to see how the game is done now that it is out of the hands of its original creators, Remedy Entertainment. According to the press release, things will be moving away from the mean streets of New York to some other urban nightmare.
Since leaving the NYPD and New York itself behind, Max has drifted from bad to worse. Double-crossed and a long way from home, Max is now trapped in a city full of violence and bloodshed, using his weapons and instincts in a desperate search for the truth and a way out.
I'm defintely looking forward to hearing more about this one, and with it coming to the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 in "Winter 2009," hopefully it won't take too long. So what would you guys want for Max Payne 3? Personally, I just want to see him get a puppy and meet a nice lady who runs a stand that sells seashells afixed with googly eyes.

Rockstar, eh?

#4 Posted by biggest_loser (219 posts) -

Doesn't even look like Max Payne. Winter already? How long have they been working on this for?

I am seriously concerned. I've waited six years for news on this but Remedy aren't making it and now after no news it'll be out this year?

I don't want another Soldier of Fortune 3. At least its something I guess, but I'm skeptical.

Quite concerned about this.  I really wanna know who's handling the writing for this game, as that is the thing that made the Max Payne games what they were, more so than the bullet-time in my opinion.  If it's not the people behind the first two games, I'm not sure I'm interested.

No PC version either? There's no PC/GFW logo on the official site.

I have been waiting 5 years to read that title, and now, and after the wait is gone, feelings of Joy,Happiness and Gladness are lumbering through my body.

Max Payne 3 has finally come.

Best news ever
#11 Posted by Splitterguy (70 posts) -

This is weird news, especially because of that release window and developer.  That aside, this makes me MAD EXCITED.

#12 Posted by lordofultima (6252 posts) -

This is amazing news! There just might be a god.

#13 Posted by Splitterguy (70 posts) -

Hmm, that art looks very Grand Theft Auto 4-ish.

#14 Posted by Teirdome (262 posts) -

Honestly kinda bummed that Remedy isn't going to be doing it.  If Dan Houser and Rupert Humphries are writing it, then I really hope that they take the gloom from GTA4 and kick it up a couple notches.

It's the announcement we've all been waiting for, but never expected to get.

No Remedy? No Thanks.

"Personally, I just want to see him get a puppy and meet a nice lady who runs a stand that sells seashells afixed with googly eyes."

With the kind of luck Max has the puppy would get hit by a car and the nice lady would get shot in a googly eyed seashell robbery gone sour.
...I think I just wrote the opening scene for Max Payne 3.

This is great. I can't wait for it.

i have trust in Rockstar. i think this game will be good.

#21 Posted by VilhelmNielsen (1735 posts) -

So, is it the dead Mona ending they're continuing on?

#22 Posted by nickystixx (184 posts) -

Sweet. I'm pretty excited for this one.

#23 Posted by shades846 (152 posts) -

so it Detroit then or Baghdad either of them would be intresting

unless pain keeps saying Hay 50! all the time

#24 Posted by DeepSpace9MM (121 posts) -

Good news all around...except no Remedy involvement. Still excited though. We deserve a sequel after having to deal with that bastard of a movie.

I'm very worried about this game. The teaser picture, the premise... I don't like it one bit. I'll gave to wait to see more, of course, but as things stand now, I'd much rather them leave Max Payne to rest with 2.

I think the moratorium on Max Payne 2 has long since past, but if for some reason you haven't played the Max Payne series and don't wish to have anything spoiled for you, stop reading this comment............. Alright. So Max Payne 2 had two endings. It all boils down to the fate of Mona Sax. If you beat the game on the highest difficulty, she survives in the end. If you beat it on anything else, she dies. The thing is, even with Mona's death, the game wraps up perfectly. Max has a moment where he reminisces about his dead wife ("I had a dream of my wife. She was dead, but it was alright.") Boom. The end. His mind is at peace. Both games were superb. An excellent end to an excellent series. With Mona living, Max can obviously be happy for a different reason.

Endings aside, almost every side-character the series ever had is now dead. The only person that survives, besides Max, of course, is Deputy Chief Jim Bravaura. Assuming this was going to be the last game of the series (to keep in line with the trilogy mentality that game developers have adopted), do we really want things to move to a whole different location, with totally different characters, for that one game? Are they going to make a Max Payne 4? I think the series will have long overstayed its welcome by that point.

Just bring me Alan Wake, which was supposedly a spiritual sucessor to Max Payne in the first place.

#26 Posted by Tarakun (225 posts) -

Damn, I need to beat the first two.

This is Rockstar we are talking about I don't expect them to mess up. Vancouver last worked on Bully which was an excellent game so I am hopeful this will be good.

I'll need to get up to date on my Max Payne lore before this comes out.  It's been a while since I've jumped sideways in slow motion.

#31 Posted by ImperiousRix (2963 posts) -

I hope this is good.  I never got to experience Max Payne 1 and 2 on the PS2, so I'm really looking forward to this.

#32 Posted by jakob187 (21676 posts) -

I would just like to point out that I called this announcement being made either at or before E3 hit.

So...I'm just going to put my ego out there and say "maybe you folks should start listening to me more often"!!!  BWAHAHAHAHA!!!

What the hell is up with the new logo??? Why change the beautiful, elegant Arial font?
The first MP popped my 3PS cherry, and they damn well better improve on what they made with MP2.
GOTY!!!
And where is Alan Wake?
#34 Posted by PapaLazarou (711 posts) -

Rockstar make games so it's in good hands and I love the GTA art style so have no problem seeing it here. I don't just want the old Max Payne cause I can go back and play that, I want something new and I hope any change of direction they make is for the better and suits the times. Can't wait cause we havn't seen a Max Payne game since 2003 and it's about damn time!

Is he wearing a white tank top with suspenders?  Holy crap that is hardcore.

#36 Edited by MrKlorox (11209 posts) -

So has it been announced which Rockstar studio is doing the primary game?

EDIT: Nevermind... it's Rockstar Vancouver: the creators of Bully. I was wondering what they were up to. R* likes to have all of their studios doing something different at the same time.

#37 Posted by theMcNasty (740 posts) -

Word.  Let's hope he meets Sally, whom sells seashells by the seashore in a southern city somewhere.

hmmm.
Good question.
Is it?
#40 Posted by zoozilla (980 posts) -

I'm cautiously optimistic about this...

#41 Posted by NinjaHunter (973 posts) -

YES!! I've been waiting for this announcement for so long.

#42 Posted by Death_Burnout (3797 posts) -

That is the best new Max Payne model ever!

#43 Posted by Damonation (556 posts) -

As long as they get the original voice actor I'm on board.

#44 Posted by Meltbrain (2973 posts) -

I hope they take the best part of the first two games, the noir style, the storytelling, the gritty, deeply dark tone. Rockstar usually know what they're doing though, and this game could be seriously sweet. Keeping my eye on this one for sure.

#45 Posted by carlthenimrod (1594 posts) -

Max Payne looks like Sam Fischer who looks like Ethan Thomas. I guess the savage homeless man look is in now?

#46 Posted by Absurd (2934 posts) -

Not liking the beard too much

#47 Posted by JCGamer (663 posts) -

I don't know about this game--the poster makes the art style look like normal Rockstar fair instead of Max Payne.  And while I like the GTA series, I always thought their art style was generic, and totally uninteresting.  Hopefully there will be a bit more style to this game than the poster would suggest.

Cannot wait, I loved the first two Max Payne games

#49 Posted by LeBart (302 posts) -

All I want is Sam Lake writting the story. That man is a genius.

#50 Posted by CitizenKane (10506 posts) -

It's about damn time I say.  I absolutely loved the first two Max Payne games(two of my favorite games of the last generation) and I am so eagerly awaiting this installment.  Miami or Chicago would be great cities for Max Payne.
