Meat is said to be a "failed experiment" of Shang Tsung, the purpose of which has never been made clear. Meat crawled his way out of his place of torment, but before he could be properly completed. He appears as a muscular, albeit skinless, combatant that sweats blood over the battle arena and sports a nasty, dangling eye.

Meat first appeared as an hidden character, an Easter Egg in Mortal Kombat 4. At that time he was merely a skin mapped over the player.
In Mortal Kombat Armageddon he was finally legitimized in the MK Universe when he was written into the single player story mode.
