One click knifing I find having to switch to a knife pretty annoying.
Melee
Concept »
From Beat-em-ups to fighting games to modern FPS, one dude hitting another has made an enjoyable pastime.
Melee in shooters, which do you prefer?
Oh double-melee in Gears 1, how I hated you.
It's too much hassle to have to switch to knife, although it is more realistic.
Weird, I was just thinking about melee in shooters recently.
Anyway, I demand more melee - fists, wrenches, hammers, axes, oh and crowbars.
One-click knife. If I had to switch to a knife I would never use melee.
But I always want to see my guy just throw a massive punch when I melee someone. Preferably while shouting.
A.
But fuck knives, I rather see a pistol whip or something.
No commando can pull out a knife and resheate it in that time period.
Equippable knife of course. The greatest moments in games like Battlefield 2 is when two players, out of nowhere, hide their guns in the heat of the battle and decide to get into an impulsive knife fight until one of them comes out on top.
One click knives result in auto-aim knifing, and unfair panic kills.
It depends on the game. I do think the good old-fashioned rifle butt is severely underutilized in modern gaming though.
Wait, so C is supposed to be melee, but with guns instead of knifes? I accidentally chose A. Everyone should be choosing C. Knifing is fine, but meleeing with individual guns and not just the same melee over and over is better. By the way, people really aren't careful enough, C and A can be interpreted as the same. You should have written something different, like "No knifes, I like to melee with a gun".
Second time I'm using this image today, but it's worth it..
I'd have to go for the third option, using your actual gun to combat the enemy. But rather than have it done in a Halo fashion, I'd much more subscribe to the way that it's used in, say, Gears of War. GoW certainly ain't perfect, but if there's one thing that game absolutely nailed, then it was the mix-up between melee and range, with for example a swift strike from the shotgun completely destabilizing the enemy's aim and stunning them. Do I even need to mention the lancer? Noo, I don't. Thing about it being that it was balanced, as it put you at a huge disadvantage should you get shot while revving it; not to mention how vulnerable you made yourself.
I also feel that Killzone 3 has a wonderful melee system with it's one-hit sync-kills as it makes sense for it to be powerful, yet mostly not a viable option as huge gun-damage and slow movement speed makes the actual rushing of an enemy only possible when he's reloading, and/or he's focusing on another player.
The ideal melee in a shooter, though? For the Emprah!

Oh, I remember those moments fondly. Seemed to happen to me all the time while sniping in the foot-hills, I'd all of a sudden run into another sniper and after having spent almost the entirety of our ammo, we'd dance the night away like two mexican desperados with chafing pants. Got to the point where I always remembered to save 2 shots in the sniper before pulling the knife. Sooner or later, they start rushing you, completely ignoring your "depleted" weapon, and then bam!
"Fool to bring a knife to a gunfight."
Shame they're changing how the knife works for Battlefield 3, it seems to be along the Killzone 3 style of thinking. Hell, at least the customizable dog-tags are a great idea.
No no, the KZ3/Crysis 2 knifing animation only works in BF3 when you approach the enemy from behind and they can't see you@Ahmad_Metallic said:

The equippable knife is back, bro :D knife fights in BF3 are gonna be amazing.
@Ahmad_Metallic: Praise Allah! The lovely kill-animations by back-stabbing sounds like a great idea; makes it all the more humiliating. All we need now is an unlockable cop-knife and we're ready to roll!
I say this calls for a celebration:
Really wish I enjoyed Jeff's music, man IS talented.. At least Grizzly Bear's "Knife" is great.
God....Gears melee is so frustrating. Also you didn't actually need 2 punches in Gears. The melee definitely gave you enough stun to just hit again though.Oh double-melee in Gears 1, how I hated you.

One punch and you're just an inch away from getting down. Even though you can take a couple shotgun blasts 5 feet away and a supernatural amount of lancer bullets.
Man just thinking back I get flashbacks of how unfair and broken they made the game. Then of course they had the fucking nerve to blame people that ran around with shotguns and played things close to the chest for ruining the game when they did all the work for them.
How do they fix it? Balance weapons? Make the lancer more formidable? No...they just ruin the cover system...
They did it in Gears 1 and then changed it back after everyone lost their shit at how unplayable it was. Then they followed it up with patching Gears 2 with the same shit patch. EPIC playtesting is run by the most inept people. That's without bringing up the wonderful network issues they can't even fathom to work out logically.
Hopefully they don't ruin Gears 3.
Switching to a knife and fighting with it. It's just annoying when there is auto-aim knifing that can seem cheap at times.

It also makes knife kills so much more satisfying when it takes skill to actually kill someone with it.
I prefer the good old "use gun as club" method, so C. Halo melee style is pretty fun.
But I do support alternative melee weapons, like the Gravity Hammer, Plasma Sword, or a baton (Saint's Row for instance) or a knife (other shooters).
Still, I always like to hear the thud from a shotgun after knocking an Elite's shields off. Or if something pisses me off, then I just beat things down in a blind rage. It's always fun to come out of a fight with the same amount of ammo you went in with.

Melee doesn't belong in fps games. The fucking sword from Halo... some one needed to be fired for that shit.
