It was fun while it lasted. I'll be sorry to see it go. =( I should really play some more before it goes down. People give it shit but its a really fun game when you get into it. It just doesn't adhere to standard shooter conventions and has a really steep learning curve. Met some cool people on MGO.

@Rolyatkcinmai: Uh? Yeah? Its had 3 expansion packs and a ton of dedicated fans. Granted not nearly as much as mainstream multiplayer games but you could always find about 3000 or so people playing around 08' - 10' its slowly starting to die off but Its had dedicated fans. I know of people who bought a PS3 JUST to play MGO.

I'm gonna need some proof on that one. Because wat.
Since they're making the expansion packs free, I might just make an account and try this out. I've had the game for a few years now, but never played the online mode.
Awww come on! I was one of the first people to get Foxhound! I'm still tied for number one of the best trainers in MGO too. First MGO1 and now this? God damnit.
Me and my friends had a jolly good time in MGO. Busting lag-switches, rage-quitting, and doing epic stealth shit.
Some "10 year service", Konami. Or should I say "COCKSUCKERAMI".
Metal Gear Online has been a good friend to me. Whenever I get tried of any other stupid shooter, I can always count on MGO to piss me off beyond boiling blood. The memories will always be with me. :(

@Grissefar: Sneaking Mission was THE BEST. Trying to be snake and sneak against human opponents really tested your sneaking skills. Nothing was more fantastic when everything came together and you won a match as snake.
It's pretty great that they managed to create a mode that somewhat resembled the single player portion. I agree that it's one of the games best modes, except if you had to play as the MK.3, that sucked.

No, I was talking about Team Sneaking, which was one of the sickest modes I've played in a multiplayer, not unlike Splinter Cell multiplayer which I tried once. Too bad good matches were rare thanks to a multitude of multiplayer problems.

Right. I quoted the wrong person. But i agree with you, Team Sneaking was crazy fun.
I love MGO. I tried it on a whim because I owned MGS4 (which I only owned because I bought a PS3 and it seemed like a good game to showcase the system) but I found I like MGO more than the single player. Though it was basically a third-person shooter the odd "MGS" touches made it a unuiqe experience from all the various modes, like a sneaking more where you have to stealth around humans and tranq them when they have assault rifles, and playing all various MGS characters like Mei-Ling who's main ability is to call in a morter strike from her battleship.
Im hoping to play more before it goes down, ill miss it.
I'm still waiting for that MGS3 Online revival project to happen (I doubt it ever will) and secretly hoped Kojima would have brought it back with the MGS HD collection.
If they didn't make it so I had to log into 2 extra accounts on top of my PSN I'd be playing it more for sure! Too bad they had no idea how to handle online.
From the limited amount I played that game (like 10-12 hours or something) it was pretty crazy and involved a lot of tactics positioning wise. So imagine the precision movement you get with the main game with multiplayer where cover and traversal is key. Still it was extremely original and fun most of the time. There was a whole lot of sitting staring down an alleyway with a sniper rifle. Which actually made the things useful cause you really couldn't expect to go a direction if the other team really had it locked down. Lots of flanking tactics, hiding. To be honest I see it as the dark souls of multiplayer, a lot of seemingly frustrating systems to learn that make for a very deep experience in the end.
I am guilty as many others are probably of neglecting mgs4 online for other easier to play games. There really is nothing else quite like it on consoles at least.
That's a shame. I bought all the expansions and I had a lot of fun with that game. Haven't been on in a long time, but sounds like a good reason to play a bit. I think I'll be out of the country when it goes offline, which is too bad. Maybe at the end they'll give everyone infinite reward points.
I barely played the online portion of MGS4, but always meant to get back into it after getting through a backlog of unplayed games. At least this announcement will force me to make use of that chunk of hard drive that's been occupied the past two years. I remember having to download gigs of data through an in-game bittorrent client! Konami is so crazy.

The Expansion packs are great. You can play as Liquid Ocelot and go around doing the "Bang Bang" finger gun thing.
I know what I'm doing once they make that stuff free.
This is pretty sad news for me. I enjoyed MGO alot and I've spent alot of time with it but I haven't played it in a while now. I'll start it up again later today.

There needs to be an TNT of this.
Yeah, I'd watch that. Like the Xboxalypse. I can't think of a clever name for this one though...
I thought it was pretty fun. To be honest, I would probably still be playing it if it wasn't for the fact I logged on one day a few months after release and no one was online. Then, even if I did get in, it took me hours to find a match. Oh yeah, and there was like 40 login screens.
It was a perfectly competent online game, but it was very janky in everything but the actual gameplay.

Fun fact. In Japan it was sold as a stand alone product.
This is probably why MGS isn't as popular in Japan as it is in the States....They make the Japanese pay twice as much to get the same amount of content....they did the same thing with MGS HD edition selling Peacewalker HD as a standalone game at full price.
They need to have a ending for the end of metal gear online like what they did for star wars and the matrix.
