I get why 3 is a bit polarizing. Kojima tried to implement a lot of the gameplay ideas he later had with Phantom Pain a decade before the technology was ready for it. The amount of time you spend in menus is really annoying. On the other hand, it had easily my favorite MGS cast, collectively my favorite bosses, and just continued to feel epic from start to finish.
And also it had the best opening of any video game, so that trumps all other arguments.
I admire MGS 2 for how crazy it got and for its technological advances at the time, but I hate just about every new character introduced in it.
