Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence is a prequel to the previous games in the Metal Gear franchise starring Big Boss, a.k.a. Naked Snake. The game takes place in the mid-1960s and Snake is tasked with rescuing a weapons designer named Sokolov who has developed a machine known as the Shagohod which is capable of launching ICBMs, threatening the security of the United States. Sokolov is being held captive by the ruthless Colonel Volgin, who seeks to use the device for his own nefarious purposes. The storyline further increases in complexity, tackling themes regarding the purpose of war, loyalty and what it really means to be a soldier. Many excellent characters are introduced in this game, including The Boss, Snake's mentor, and Eva, later known as Big Mama.
Subsistence added a number of features not included in the original Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. It was the first Metal Gear to map camera control to the right analog stick, arguably improving the gameplay. It also included the first online multiplayer component in the series, though it has since been taken off-line. The original release of the game also included ports of the original MSX versions of Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2, marking the first time these games were made available to fans outside Japan. There were some other bonus features included as well, including parodies of several cut-scenes found in the game. Due to the added content and the improved camera, Subsistence is arguably superior to the original, featuring the same superb storyline and characters while making the game-play more enjoyable.
The game was re-released as part of the Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection just prior to the launch of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. However, this version did not include the second disc and therefore lacked some of the bonus content the original release contained.

Subsistence is an updated version of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater which contains a brand new third-person camera, an online mode (Metal Gear Online), a boss fight mode and two emulated versions of Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake.
