Akhiba, Yeah or Nay?

Just as the topic states, do you like "Johny" or do you despise him with a passion. Personally I like him a lot. He was really annoying in the beginning, but then he got a lot better.

So what are your thoughts?

*SPOILERS*

He's totally cool. He was one of the Genome Soldiers in MGS1, right? That explains why he looks kinda like Solid Snake, he's pumped full of their genes. Also, there was a perfectly valid reason for his strange antics...fear of shots. No nano-machines to process the filthy waters of those war zones! It makes perfect sense!!

Funny as Hell.

LIked the character a lot.

Dude, Johnny is just a staple of Metal Gear Solid.
Removing him would be like removing Big Bosses other eye, and watching the series from then on would be like watching Big Boss wander off a cliff!
...
Okay, so I exaggerate slightly, But I dig the dude. He was badass by the end of MGS4.

#5 Posted by seraph973 (27 posts) - 4 years, 10 months ago

I believe he was also in MGS2, the part where you need to look for the dude with the pacemaker. if you point the hearing device to the wall away from ocelot, he's there taking a dump

He was ok.  I guess I didn't expect him to play such a pivotal role in 4 though.  Especially since he had just always been kind of a joke character in the others.  And...

***SPOILERS***

his bride Meryl clearly saw the guy crap his pants at least once....kind of a turn-off I would think?

indifferent

he didnt play that big of a part in the story for me to care

he was more of a throw away character for kojima to use for a little humor. kojima could not have done what he did with akhiba with any of the main characters that are actually significant to the story

#8 Posted by Dolphin_Butter (1871 posts) - 4 years, 10 months ago

Nay, he should have just been purely comic relief.

#9 Posted by genomesoldier (5 posts) - 4 years, 10 months ago

He is cool when he's not having stomach problems

#10 Posted by suneku (2997 posts) - 4 years, 10 months ago

I liked him more as the comic relief... not so much as an important character in MGS4

#11 Posted by Iyiu (98 posts) - 4 years, 10 months ago

GAY!

#12 Posted by hazelnutman (1097 posts) - 4 years, 10 months ago

Was it just me, or did that scene in MGS3 (when you throw food back at that dude in the cell) really make you emotional?

#13 Posted by Thomasus20012 (7 posts) - 4 years, 10 months ago

He was a great character only he had the worst intro of any MGS char, being found by a militia while taking a no 2

#14 Posted by LouChou (458 posts) - 4 years, 10 months ago

it pissed me off that he couldn't just remain comic relief. It's like, in almost an instant, he went from useless to essential for no actual reason. And I didn't give a shit.

You sound like a Rich prick from Beverly Hills or any souther california city

ANYWAY. Yeah, he wasn't affected by naomachines, thats why he was important. He showed how much Nanomachines changed soldiers and not for the good either. How they could be controlled

That's offensive. Please don't use that word that way in the future. :)

I did not feel he was needed in the story. While I found his love for Meryl somewhat humorous

*SPOILERS*

The Mr. and Mrs. Smith scene was ridiculous. The marriage at the end also seemed really out of place, even for Kojima.
#17 Posted by TurboMan (5498 posts) - 4 years, 10 months ago

yeah, I think he's cool as a side character, but not as the main character crapping throughout the story(even though that crap leads somewhere in the end)

And surprisingly I couldn't be further away from such a place (what a strange thing to say?)

ANYWAY. That was indeed his purpose, but I don't recall hearing any kind of back story around him, or anything that made me care. Being immune to nanomachines is more an ability than a purpose. And I wouldn't say he was needed to show the change in soldiers, you could see that from the way soldiers were with nanomachines, and how they were when they were detached from them.
#19 Edited by Schadenfreude (205 posts) - 4 years, 10 months ago

He wasn't immune to nanomachines, he had just been too afraid to take the shot.

Touche. I'm not sure why I wrote that. The rest of what I said still applies though.

I thought that his inclusion was odd at first but you get used to it and you actually begin to really like the character by the time the game has come to an end.

#22 Posted by AutomaticSnake (390 posts) - 4 years, 10 months ago

He was funny at first but then it just got gay with him and meryl. That love scene they both had while they were getting shot was wtf.... lame.

#23 Posted by Philanthropy (137 posts) - 4 years, 10 months ago

He was too important.

Yup agreed, real cheesy, not as cheesy as that Otacon one, I wanted to rip his glasses off him and stamp on them

I agree very well said.

i like him but its only because he's the one that meryl stole the clothes in MGS1...
dont like his hair though... kinda gay...

#27 Posted by Sbaitso (317 posts) - 4 years, 9 months ago

johnny is pretty much amazing. never saw him becoming a major character but im still down with that.  plus he's a big part  of that wierd sorta MGS humor that fans know and love

#28 Posted by marc (252 posts) - 4 years, 9 months ago

I thought he was a great character. A great contrast to all the badass types in the game. Considering ehat he was before MGS4, I'd say Hideo has done an excellent job with him. He was very humorous in the first half, and when   **SPOILERS**

Meryl's life was on the line, he really stepped it up and became her hero, on several occasions. Very humane character. Mad props for Johnny!!

#29 Posted by NinjaMunkey (204 posts) - 4 years, 9 months ago

I thought he was a good character.

He sort of had to be there, every MGS game has someone with some sort of stomach problem, MGS1, the guy with the stomach ache, MGS2, there was that guy that pisses on snakes head, MGS3, another guy with a stomach ache. You never know, Ackiba could be the guy from MGS1 and 2!!!!!!!

#30 Posted by Homer (1372 posts) - 4 years, 9 months ago

Kind of wierd how he crapped himself a lot but hes pretty cool.

What was the deal with that totally unnecessary.

But what would you guys think if he was the main character for a new metal gear game?
"
I would like that, BUT DAMNIT! SUNNY BETTER BE IN THERE!
#32 Posted by Red (5895 posts) - 4 years, 9 months ago

I like Johnny. I can see why other people don't like Johnny but he's funny but then at the same time extremely honorable but he's still a wacky guy. You know what I mean.
The wedding scene was fine, I mean, I wasn't crazy about it but it wasn't bad at all.

#33 Posted by NeoTheta (219 posts) - 4 years, 9 months ago

I really like Akiba. He ends up being very quirky, yet heroic at the same time, which is odd, and admirable. I would love to see him in future installments in the Metal Gear series, but not as a playable character.

#34 Posted by brukaoru (5078 posts) - 4 years, 9 months ago

Johnny is awesome. I love the running joke. Johnny was in MGS1 and MGS2. And of course there was the Johnny in MGS3... Hmm, I wonder if Akiba's father is the Johnny from MGS3... *ponders*

#35 Posted by TwoOneFive (9449 posts) - 4 years, 9 months ago

i thought they totally completely changed his character towards the end of mgs4. he turned into a solid snake copy and was like outstanding super soldier. and then at the end in the wedding they tried to make him seem silly again, it didnt seem right at all. like he's shitting his pants whining all of the time, and then he turns into kurt russel saving people and looking all handesome with cool one-liners and i dunno, just wierd.

It was Akiba in all 4 (well... in MGS3 it was his grandfather), and it's explained that all first born sons are named Johnny.

At the start of the game he was a cowardly, stupid, clumsy person who everyone disliked.

At the end of a game, for no apparant reason, he changed into a good looking, hard-ass who can pop headshots from 50 metres away.

Stupid character development. Nay to Akiba.

hes fine imo.  A comic relief.
