What does it mean to level up a gun? MGS:PW

Not the rank up via research, that is obvious.

What does it mean when a weapon is leveled up through use? it doesn't seem to say what happens.

@Devil240Z: Slightly less recoil and more damage, I believe.

It means the gun is a little older, and a little wiser due to its experiences. Later it will have the ability to do high level raids and get a mount.
