David Hayter not asked back for MGS5

He starts his tweet off saying "At least I had a good run". He was then asked "Did they even ask you to do it?", to which he replies, "Nope".

The hell is this? The guy plays the main character for how long, and they don't even ask him back? No "Hey thanks for playing, but we're gonna go with someone else"? Just nothing?

This is bananas. David Hayter has been Snake since the late 90's. Not only do they not go with him, they go with someone who does a bad imitation of Hayter. That's just crazy.

At least Square Enix brought back the original voice actor for Agent 47. Maybe Konami will as well?

Maybe they forgot to ask.

Do we even know if Snake's in the game?

big boss had a different voice actor in MGS4. is it that dude doing the voice this time around?

#5 Posted by theillusiveman0 (85 posts) -

Well to be fair, the older Big Boss isn't voiced by Hayter so im guessing thats probably why he wasn't called back for now.

#6 Edited by expensiveham (293 posts) -

I trust that Konami knows what they're doing.

#7 Edited by N7 (3590 posts) -

@blu3v3nom07: David Hayter did a poll on his twitter, asking people what they think if he didn't voice Snake, but I never thought anything of it. When it came to Rising, Quinton Flynn said he hadn't been asked back, even though the game was in development for like 2 years. But they got him, eventually. So I figured Snake would still be voiced by David Hayter, but nope. Not even asked back. That's just cold.

@n7: They forgot. Mistakes happen.

If his exclusion was done out of creative necessity, then it's a respectable decision and one we have yet to see the fruits of. People were clamoring for Michael Ironside to do Sam Fisher's voice in Splinter Cell: Conviction, and he didn't do a good job despite the iconic attachment. Just wait and see (or hear).

#10 Posted by N7 (3590 posts) -

@ajayraz: Doesn't sound like him. Richard Doyle did The Fury in MGS3 as well as Big Boss in MGS4, and a young-ish Doyle didn't sound anything like this new guy. I honestly think it sounds like John Dimaggio.

@theillusiveman0: I always rationalized that it was because Solid Snake and Big Boss would have had the same voice, and been weird. So they got someone else. But this is out-of-the-gate No Hayter. Despite how the Japanese voice actor for Snake is returning. So he keeps his voice, but the english VA gets a new guy?

I just find it really strange.

#11 Posted by gumdealer (96 posts) -

I'm just going to keep on hoping that this is more weird marketing. Maybe they are hoping fans keep talking about this and eventually say, "since you demanded it, we are bringing back David Hayter."

But that is just me hoping.

You should not have an emotional attachment to your jobs. I dont care if someone dosent like my designs. Pornstars are (usualy) able to seperate sex and their other emotions.

Richard Doyle. Not confirmed who's voicing Big Boss this time around though I always expected Doyle to replace Hayter at some point. Most of the people complaining are people who don't know the difference between Solid Snake and Big Boss.

#14 Posted by N7 (3590 posts) -

@dagbiker: That's just not true. Sure, being a construction worker or something, it would be weird to have an emotional attachment. But when you play a character, when you BE that character, and portray him for so long, after so many years and so much emotion, why shouldn't you? That's like telling Mark Meer it's weird to be sad he isn't coming back as Shepard. You can't spend that long being a part of something so personal and emotional, and be perfectly okay with being dropped for someone that sortakinda sounds similar. Even Kojima said that he preferred the English voice acting in MGS because of Hayter.

Acting in itself is "emotional attachment"

Maybe it is some sort of weird marketing. I mean Square Enix did the same thing and they brought the original voice actor for 47 back.

I'm not sure my heart can take this.

Do you care if they like them? I mean it's one thing being used to clients rejecting work it's another not having an emotional attachment to what you do.

IT'S ALL PART OF THE MGSV MINDGAME. Don't trust anything you hear surrounding this game. Kojima is trying to trap you motherfuckers in his mind web! It's the NWO all over again.

?No Ironside No Buy?

#19 Posted by N7 (3590 posts) -

@mariachimacabre: But what if David Hayter is CG!? Have you ever seen him in the same room with Snake!?

totally, I bet young solid snake is in this game and hayter voices him. It wouldn't even be the craziest thing to have happened with MGS5's development.

#21 Edited by MachoFantastico (4719 posts) -

Richard Doyle did the voice of Big Boss in MGS4, and considering he's older in MGS5 (least when compared to Peace Walker) I don't blame Kojima for sticking with Doyle if that is indeed the case.

Also, I approve of giving Big Boss a different voice... smart move to better differentiate the two characters more.

@trueenglishgent:

Especially as we get closer to Big Boss commanding Solid Snake. It'd be really odd for both you and your commander to have the same strange Batman voice.

#23 Posted by N7 (3590 posts) -

@trueenglishgent: @crosstheatlantic: But the Japanese voice actor for Big Boss voices him in this game as well. That would be a weird double standard for Kojima to have, after saying he preferred the English voice acting in MGS because of Hayter.

#24 Edited by BoOzak (935 posts) -

Figured. The whole 'would you miss me' thing on top of the soul snake dlc being exclusive to japan confirmed my fears. Saying that, MGS5 looks to be taking itself more seriously if the trailers are any indication. Hayter was great because he could do humour and melodrama but maby they want someone with more grit. Even so he will be missed, Snake is one of my favourite characters in video games and whoever they choose to replace his voice has a lot to live up to.

EDIT: Right, as far as this video goes i'm not happy (Thanks to Artisanbreads for directing me)

His voice isnt grizzly at all! ;( Kind of sounds like Troy Baker. (so does everyone though)

I mean why the hell couldnt they get Kiefer Sutherland's voice? (he's in the damn trailer) his voice is pretty manly ;p

Weirdly enough as I recently discovered thanks to @enigma777, Snake's Japanese voice actor actually voiced all the Snakes....

Wait- are you telling me that the protagonist of MGS3 was not Solid Snake? What the hell is happening?

#27 Posted by Reisz (1507 posts) -

Big shoes to fill if this is the case. Possible that not all the localisation has been taken care of yet. As others have suggested this could be making room for Solid Snake in his youth to make an appearance, I would want to hear something directly from Kojima that Hayter won't be contributing before I start thinking too much about it though.

#28 Posted by SpiderJerusalem (113 posts) -

Makes sense, especially since at this point in the franchise Big Boss is in his (late?) 40s and looks pretty different from Solid.

It's only logical to futher separate the characters by getting a new voice actor, I think.

They quite frankly should have had him voiced by a different voice actor to begin with in MGS3, considering Solid Snake out of the three clones is actually genetically the most different from Big Boss. But fanservice and all that more than likely demanded that a young Naked Snake also be voiced by David.

That's the funniest statement about Konami I've ever heard.

Also the guy is a voice actor, I'm sure he could have modulated his voice to sound different. Final decision is up to Kojima though and he is very specific about the vision of his games. Still out of respect they should have at least seen what he can do.

Snake took one too many chops to the throat and his voice changed. Problem solved.

#35 Edited by Quarters (1719 posts) -

It's getting so much closer to MG1/MGS territory that I expected them to switch eventually. There has to be more of a lead in to him being Richard Doyle in MGS4. It's sad, but completely understandable, and perhaps even necessary. For instance, if they ever did the MG1/MG2 remake, they will need for there to be two different voice actors. A choice like this merely opens up the opportunity more.

#36 Posted by Fredchuckdave (5551 posts) -

He's kind of pricey and the voice isn't that hard to replicate as hundreds of solid impressions show.

#37 Edited by ArtelinaRose (1855 posts) -

This finally registered. I think this is what the Anti-Spiral meant by the ultimate despair.

Are you being serious? In MGS1 it was explained that Solid and Liquid where clones of Big Boss.

As the voice thing goes... I dunno I'm willing to wait and see voice acting is the easiest thing in a game to drop in and replace. So....who knows. For all we know the guy in the scrubs crawling isn't even Big Boss. I mean lets not forget Big Boss never lost an arm. Remember guys this is the dude who pulled the wool over everyone's eyes and we ended up playing as Raiden in MGS 2. Just lets all chill out and not jump to conclusions just yet. We only have seen the tip of the iceberg here.

#40 Edited by N7 (3590 posts) -

@artemesia: Yeah I know. I grew up with MGS and David Hayter's voice was right there the whole way through. I can't quite comprehend, not only that he isn't doing the voice, that they decided they weren't going to even tell him that. Just, nope, nothing.

I almost feel like this is a hoax and Kojima is just goading people, because he's said a bunch of times in the past that he prefers the English voice cast to the Japanese, and David Hayter's portrayal of Snake was one of those reasons.

#41 Edited by Azteck (7449 posts) -

Somehow, Big Boss =/= Solid Snake which is very very strange.

What are you talking about? By Metal Gear 2 Big Boss was like 90% cyborg.

@n7: the hitman voice actor was different, eidos said that at last e3 I believe

Maybe they were just using a stand-in voice for the trailer, and will contact him later?

I sure am hopeful!

Not to mention David Hayter is trending on twitter right now... for all the wrong reasons, of course, but he's trending! We've got a voice and it's being heard, at least... by someone.

ah yes thats is true, i was just about to be all like WTF on hayter not voicing snake, but yea the big boss in this game is much older now so it makes sense

#50 Posted by Legion_ (1301 posts) -

Seems like a lot of people want to brush this under the carpet, and that's a shame. The trailer looked fantastic, but I'm not coming back if David Hayter isn't. He IS Snake. Without him, there can be no Snake.
