The wiki page talks about a "real time trailer".

What the heck is one of those? And how could a developer that's not Kojima Productions do a "Metal Gear Solid 5"? Does anyone really see that happening?

#5 Posted by Chaser324 (6328 posts) -

My first reaction upon seeing the lead character was that it looked like Snake, and the Kojima anagram is interesting. The only confusing thing is that I don't recall Big Boss or Solid Snake ever losing an arm, but...Metal Gear.

It doesn't matter kojima himself said peace walker was mgs 5. So anything after it would be 6 anyways.

#7 Posted by sodacat (214 posts) -

But Liquid and Ocelot both lost arms, so it's a thematically consistent symbol.

Alternatively, there's no reason Big Boss or Solidus couldn't have lost arms that were replaced with prosthetics.

#8 Posted by FilipHolm (667 posts) -

Don't even think this is Metal Gear

#9 Posted by Milkman (16534 posts) -

It's clearly Arrested Development: The Game.

#10 Posted by probablytuna (3546 posts) -

If this is MGS5 wouldn't it be developed by Kojima Productions themselves?

#11 Posted by EuanDewar (4771 posts) -

Kojima is so fucking mental

From XOF, two phantoms are born.

The signs definitely point to this being a Metal Gear game. But even if it's not, I am on board!

#16 Posted by N7 (3573 posts) -

The phantom limb syndrome is when you feel your limbs even after you lose them. Maybe even so does this syndrome occur in twins who are separated at birth? From XOF, two phantoms are born.

Numbers in video game franchises are pretty much pointless now anyway.

Yeah, against the 6-14 Pistons...
#25 Posted by JZ (2125 posts) -

Oh I was thinking of soild snake nevermind

#26 Posted by Chaser324 (6328 posts) -

@SlightConfuse: It also definitely looks like it could be the same engine that Ground Zeroes is running on. The way the beards look in particular (especially the way those individual follicles stand out on the upper lip) seem very similar.

W's a W!

And hot damn, that's the same scar.  It just happened to pan to Kojima for a 25th anniversary shot at one point.  He wouldn't have gone there just to watch Mr. Jackson, would he?  Probably wanted to watch in person as everyone got bewildered.

I'm guessing that thematically this is Kojima's white whale. The game he's been chasing his entire career, the toil of which has left him scarred and disfigured. Bonus points if the game contains extensive cutscenes detailing the physiology of various species of whales

#29 Posted by SlightConfuse (3963 posts) -

@Chaser324: 2 phantoms = 2 games. this could be a parellel game

#30 Posted by N7 (3573 posts) -

Yo... Um. Dat doctor in the beginning was Madnar. It was certainly MG related. If you look at the crawl animation where he's flopping around, it's way too similar to the opening demo scene in Ground Zeroes of Big Boss crawling.

And, Liquid Snake lost his arm. They used his body as a substitute for Solid Snake after the tanker went down, but, as quoted by the doctor in the beginning, "You've been in a coma for... quite some time." HOW'S 10 YEARS SOUND? Also his hair is blonde that is starting to grey. It's the same mullet as Liquid Snake. British flag in the background? His arm is gone so there's no tattoo, seeing as how Ocelot was the temp owner of it.

Joakim = Kojima

#32 Posted by JZ (2125 posts) -

Liquid boss my god

#33 Posted by CharlesAlanRatliff (5380 posts) -

It's Metal Gear. Now, whether it is Ground Zeroes or not...

#34 Posted by sodacat (214 posts) -

There's also 20 years between Metal Gear (1995) and Metal Gear Solid 4 (2014) where Big Boss is still alive, but in hiding. I mean that's unlikely due to his age, but still, it's there.

That would be more interesting than any of the 900 hours of cutscenes in the Metal Gear series to date.

@sodacat: There's also the fact that Kojima was working on getting Liquid Snake's side of the story into Peace Walker too. They originally planned that game to span from the 70's to the 90's, and hey, who's to say not even further?

Could it be that this is that side of the story? Liquid Snake was with the British SAS when he was captured in Afghanistan during the Gulf War, and went AWOL after that, turning up later to take hold of Shadow Moses Island. He was a good guy before MGS1, and Kojima wanted to include what made him go bad.

@rebgav: Oh, I know. I wasn't thinking about the thread title when I wrote that. I meant it's either Ground Zeroes or a MG game we hadn't seen anything from yet. Seems like it's MGS V, though!
#40 Posted by Fluttercry (180 posts) -

At first I was skeptical, but after seeing the trailer, it REALLY looks like it could be MGS

#41 Posted by Phatmac (5721 posts) -

Kojima is fucking with us again, aye?

Big Boss was also forced into a perpetual coma until Solidus was "killed" in MGS2 which takes place in 2009. Then they used the body parts of Liquid and Solidus to reconstruct his body. So it would be possible for this to take place between 2010 and 2014 except for the fact that Big Boss looked really different at the end of MGS4 and also had both arms. Which to be fair he could have gotten another one after the ordeal finished. This could be when Big Boss is put back together and he was transported out for safe keeping from the Patriots but obviously not too safe.

Your forgetting that Liquid had both limbs in MGS1, and even if it takes place after it would have been the wrong arm if I'm not mistaken.

Yep:

Yep its MGS alright. The arm leads me to believe its Liquid but who knows with Kojima. KOJIMA BE TROLLIN

It's the wrong arm though. Ocelot used Liquid's right arm.

Did the voice of the fully bandaged guy sound like Kiefer Sutherland to anyone else.

#48 Posted by Quarters (1633 posts) -

@impostle: Totally. Also, another possible reference: the petals falling on the main dude when he's looking at his arm in first person. You know, exactly like the petals from the field in MGS3. Dude.

#49 Posted by WalkerD (461 posts) -

@impostle: You aren't the first person I've heard say that. So I suppose so.

#50 Edited by MiniPato (2721 posts) -

I really hope they spin this out into a game instead of some viral marketing demo for another MGS game. I mean, I'm excited for the new Metal Gear and I think this is a cool way to tease it with all the clues, but at the same time, the trailer sold me on a game where the protagonists are a one armed man and a man whose head is veiled under bandages in a F.E.A.R. like environment. I mean, a troop of armed, voiceless soldiers acting with the single determination of eliminating helpless rehabilitating soldiers in a hospital was genuinely frightening.
