Let me start by saying I have never really been very interested in the Metal Gear series. I played though did not finish the original Metal Gear Solid back on the Playstation back in the late 90s, but the series did not stick with me. I played MGS2 on the Playstation 2 but was left somewhat nonplussed by it. Since then I have pretty much ignored the series. I took a mild interest in the release of MGS4 back in 2008 but not enough to actually buy or play it.
For some reason, that all changed when I saw the trailer for The Phantom Pain last week. I cannot explain why but after watching it I had a sudden sense of panic. How could I have gotten this far in my gaming career and not have played through all of the MGS games? How could I have ignored and treated with apathy this rich intriguing world? To this end I have resolved to get myself up to date with everything MGS. I plan on using this blog to document my play through the MGS series right up to the latest. I won't be playing the spin offs or portable games.
Step one will be to play MGS1 on the Playstation 1. I toyed with the idea of running an emulator or even playing the PC version. I've now come to the conclusion that the only way to do it properly, to really do it justice is on the Playstation hardware itself. I know I could have just bought it for £7.99 on the Playstation Store, but right now I don't own a PS3. That might need to change if I get as far as playing MGS4 of course...
So for now I have picked up a PS1 console, memory card and the game from eBay all for this side of 30 quid. As of today only the memory card has arrived which is a bit frustrating but hopefully I will be up and running very soon!
