Snake approves of this foreign drink, but probably doesn't approve of misleading his fans.

Shame on you, Official PlayStation Magazine UK.

The publication teased a cover story with Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima with a line about Metal Gear Solid 5, strongly implying he would be revealing the first details on the unannounced sequel within.

Turns out that’s not true, and OPM UK let the story linger the entire weekend before clearing the air. It doesn’t help that Konami didn’t issue its own clarification, instead telling me my request for comment was passed onto the UK division of the company, and nothing came back.

OPM UK published a more elaborate quote today:

“I think we’ll probably have to make it [MGS5] at some point, but what that will be, we have no idea,” he reportedly said. “As far as my involvement in the project is concerned, [it] probably won’t be as much as it was with MGS1--maybe I can do just one stage! For MGS1 I made the maps myself, laid out the enemy routes myself, did everything hands-on--that level I can’t do again.”

In other words, it’s not in active development, it’s not a real thing, and it was purely hypothetical conjecture on the part of Kojima--sorry, Koj. In other words, a complete non-story.

The result was an article on Giant Bomb that was misleading at best, a falsehood at worst. That’s embarrassing, and it’s why I barely ever run news that isn’t straight from the horse’s mouth or the result of my own eyes-on, ears-on reporting. And it’s why I’ll refrain from publishing anything from OPM UK again anytime soon. I’m not about to encourage what was purely link bait.

I linked to the new story from OPM UK only as proof of its existence. I’d encourage you not to click on it.

Don't beat yourself up too much about it Patrick - I've seen other sites do far, far worse for a story and the level of professional integrity and fact checking is pretty high on this site (bar that one time with that Brad Nicholson article but I digress...) so I'm sure most will let it slide.

OPM UK however, I've got words for you...

"That level I can't do again" -- I hate hearing this from devs who get so far up in a company that they never actually want to get in there and make shit any more.

Technically, they were not wrong...

#24 Posted by Lego_My_Eggo (736 posts) - 1 year, 6 months ago

So.... is it cool if i put OPM UK as the publisher and magazine as the platform for that MGS5 wiki?

#25 Edited by bybeach (3965 posts) - 1 year, 6 months ago

I don't care if another one was ever made.

But then I I don't care if another one was ever made

Somehows I mean 2 different things. All I want if for Octagon to stop staring at anime porn, sleeping with his stepmother in a furry suit, and have a normal life so he may indeed have tears to cry, again..

I don't think what OPM printed was misleading or unprofessional. It's just standard UK tabloid magazine fare (i.e. not GamesTM or Edge).

Not for a second did I actually believe there would be anything more than there was on MGS 5, but you can't really say that what emerged wasn't 'the latest details on MGS 5' It's just not what anyone wanted to hear.

This is why i don't feel bad for Patrick, he made his choice to go with the story and he feels but hurt about it, but he is a professional and a adult and he should take responsibility for his actions and let it go.

And just to be clear i like and respect Patrick and that has not changed so keep up the good work.

I honestly don't mind the occasional false rumour; it was spreading like wildfire over the weekend and was becoming pretty hard to ignore. I'm just glad our news team didn't post that PETA tanooki suit crap

#37 Posted by SilverPR (33 posts) - 1 year, 6 months ago

One of the examples Future Media is so desperate for sales and eventually will be a afterthought in the near future.

#38 Posted by countinhallways (631 posts) - 1 year, 6 months ago

To be honest I never took the initial quote to mean anything in the least bit concrete. But I get where Patrick is coming from.

Anyway, back to laughing at various things on the internet.

#39 Posted by SerHulse (651 posts) - 1 year, 6 months ago

For future reference, there is a general rule of thumb with most of our magazine press:

  1. If it is a quote on the front page, it is widely out of context.
  2. If it is an 'exclusive review' it's a 10/10 that imparts no actual knowledge on the quality of the game.
  3. If none of the above it's an advert.

And trust me, no-one here still gives a crap about these magazines and their faux-journalistic integrity, with very few exceptions (e.g. EDGE).

#40 Posted by dezvous (476 posts) - 1 year, 6 months ago

I'm disappointed there's no official news but, isn't this even better when you consider who this is coming from? I mean, the same guy who said he was done making MGS games and has gone on to make 3 extra ones since then actually says there's probably going to be one? Doesn't that make it virtually a sure-fire thing?

So if in the past he planned on never making another one again but made 3 instead, this time thinks it'll probably happen but with limited involvement. That sounds like awesome news for fans hahah. The part about it not being like MGS1 in terms of his involvement seems weird because I can't imagine any subsequent MGS had that level of involvement anyways and Hideo can't help but get involved with an MGS game. Especially one with a number in the title.

#41 Posted by drac96 (619 posts) - 1 year, 6 months ago

I'm very glad that there isn't an MGS 5 in development.

#42 Posted by InfiniteGeass (2009 posts) - 1 year, 6 months ago

Haha, Patrick got trolled. Nice job.

#43 Posted by Gabriel (4036 posts) - 1 year, 6 months ago

Well Patrick instead of blaming the magazine maybe instead think twice about publishing things that seem dubious in the first place.

#44 Posted by ezdude (363 posts) - 1 year, 6 months ago

Well, I didn't really care from the beginning since I knew Kojima wouldn't have much involvement with it. Still, I'm excited for whatever else he's moving on to.

#49 Posted by Y2Ken (650 posts) - 1 year, 6 months ago

I read OPM UK on a regular basis. The people who write it are a good bunch, but as a magazine of course they will blow anything they can somewhat out of proportion because they have to sell copies. As to why they left it over the weekend to clarify, I suspect they were enjoying their weekend and not considering that their heading might have caused such a stir, most journalists aren't diligent to the level you (Patrick) are where they post things through the weekends, in particular if they work in print rather than online.

Don't let this get to you Patrick, we don't mind - but in general I would say always be cautious of what any magazine puts on their front cover, it is almost always an exaggeration designed to get people to pick the magazine off shelves.
