Just finished the game. I had a great time, I feared for a STALKER clone, I'm happy to say I was wrong. Not to say that the stalker games are bad games per se, but this title does exceed my expectations.
Now onto the disappointments or rather, missed oppertunities.
First one will be a minor spoiler, nothing game breaking, but just my complaint with not using a great concept more.
Ghosts. Very early in the game you enter a side of the metro where nobody comes, not even the monsters. Instead it is inhabited by Ghosts, people and objects reliving their last moments over-and-over again. These bodyless shadows gave me the creeps, way more than any FEAR or Condemned ghosts/monsters would. Having the companion who knew how to deal with them took away my fears, but I knew I would have to face them on my own soon. WRONG. This is the only moment you encounter ghosts. MISSED OPPERTUNITY.
Secondly, without spoilers, close combat. I have already made a thread about shotguns, so I wont complain about them here. Your alternative are knife attacks. What I would've liked to see were combat moves. Like if I get the drop on somebody, I want to be able to perform a special move, instead of just clicking on the guys head and putting a knife in it. This should apply to Human NPCs and low-health/wounded monsters. I know this is probably a personal gripe, but still worth mentioning.
Third and lastly, the Dark Ones. I'll go into spoiler territory again.
The main antagonists, the Dark Ones, are only seen in cut-scenes. Not untill the very end you get some real running away from scary-long-armed-people. I think this could've played out a bit better. I like to point at a game like F.E.A.R, where the whole game has freaky corner-of-your-eye moments. If it would benefit the game, I don't know. They just seemed interesting enemies that don't get any real play.
That's pretty much it. I played it on the PC and the game looks awesome. Not Crysis-awesome, but something else entirely. I would not mind playing more horror-games like this. The way they keep you hungry for ammo was very well executed, making me sometimes run blindly to the next small coridor, to escape the hordes of baddies.
Four stars out of Five.
