Why does this run so terribly?

I've owned this on Steam for quite a while and decided to give it a go. There's a problem though. No matter what I do, the game runs terribly.

I have a pretty good PC, and can run everything else very well. What is going on?

    • CPU: i7-2600K 3.4Ghz (with 4.2Ghz on turbo)
    • RAM: 8GB 1600Mhz
    • GPU: 2x GTX460 1GB Editions
    • SSD
    • Windows 7 64-Bit

DX9, DX10, DX11. All crappy performance. Almost unplayable at DX11. Why!? There are way more visually demanding games that I run perfectly.

Dual core 3.0GHz with a 460GTX and I max it out. Maybe try with only one GPU. Unless they're designed to run on dual you're not doing anything but gunking up your pipelines.

I've never understood why people shell out for 2 video cards, I've always had a single card and always been able to max games out.

Try what Toxeia said, it's honestly the only explanation short of bad hardware.

It's made by Russians. Nearly any game coming out of there (Cryostasis and Dead Island also come to mind) are usually poorly optimized for PC's.

Update your drivers? I used to run that game fine on a 9800GTX, you've got some sort of problem here.

@AlisterCat: Turn off AA. That is a HUGE resource hog and you really won't notice much of a visual difference, but the performance gain is astounding.

Yeah I meant to say leave it on AAA and stay away from MSAA. If that doesn't work, maybe try and take one card out and see how it runs on one. Nvidia usually has good driver support, but sometimes SLI just won't work.

If that is the case, you can still use the other card as a Physx card. I use my old 260 as one and even with Physx loaded on to that, my GTX 560ti is still running at full load. It's a pretty demanding game.

Okay just loaded it up and noticed something. I have FXAA forced on through Nvidia control panel with drivers 301.42. Turning it off really helped a bunch too. Hope you can get it to work dude. I really enjoyed the atmosphere this game has.

Something is definitely wrong, I used to have this game running pretty well on my old 4870 on medium/high.

Dx11 can cripple computers because by default it turns on tessellation I believe, but to have it run so bad in Dx9 and 10 screams there's a bigger issue playing into things.

    because 2560x1600 or dual monitors

1920x1080 and below I agree that dual cards are not required to a degree, a lot of people just buy an extra card for cheap if they already have a motherboard with crossfire or SLI support.

Yeah, a lot of those Eastern Bloc games aren't optimized very well, and you really have to tinker to get them to look good at a decent framerate.

But set AA to the lowest possible, and don't use MSAA, as that's the big hog.

In my experience, that game was kind of coded for shit. It wasn't optimized well and therefore consumes whatever power you can give it without a ton of payoff. I never ran well on my computer even with stats that should have been able to run it well.

Also if you allow it, try playing the game with a 360 pad. 40-50fps feels much better on a gamepad than it does with a mouse.

My drivers are always up to date. I don't have any AA enabled as much as I can help it.

I will try removing one of my cards, just to try it out.

    i5 2500 @3.3GHz, 4GB RAM, GTX 560

it ran buttery smooth with pretty much everything maxed except some of the AA settings, which I didn't really try to push. I maybe had one crash (if at all) during my whole playthrough.

I have a similiar setup but a GT570 instead of 2 460's and I can run it mostly maxed out DX11 and it looks amazing. Maybe your drivers are hella out of date?

Nope. I always get the newest drivers the day they come out and do a clean install each time.

You probably shouldn't say you run the game "maxed out" when it's at that lower resolution. Usually maxed out is at least 1080p (1920x1080) running at the highest quality settings. I also have a GTX460 + 2500K and I couldn't run it smoothly at 1080p + highest settings.
