Sure, these days have almost every game sporting the newfangled 3D, but way back when, everyone had to live with plain old 2D. 2D, or two dimensions, limit the game to scrolling backgrounds, but some games even now make use of this basic concept.
An Artificial Intelligence Construct is a synthetic technological creation that is a part of a bigger whole. The AI Construct can be a self aware computer or simply a grouping of technologies that come together to form one large being.
Adaptation refers to the development of a trait that better enables an individual to thrive in a given environment. In video games, the word is often used to explain radical physiological transformations in characters or the environment.
Extraterrestrials appear in many video games in a variety of styles. Sometimes they're evil, sometimes they're benevolent, and sometimes they're very similar to humans.
Characters either begin with multiple outfits, unlock them through play, or purchase them as in-game items. These costumes are sometimes integral to play.
Instrumental music, often electronic, that does not follow conventional music structures, instead using various sounds to create a mood. Ambient music can evoke many different feelings in the listener, from tranquility to creeping dread.

Giving a taste of battle with a major or Final Boss near the beginning of a game. With the Player needing one final blow, or rather the Boss on the verge of finishing you off, the villain "runs away", often with your weapon or powers.
In video games, breaking the fourth wall occurs when a game becomes aware of its nature as a game, or when a character directly acknowledges the player.
Bulls are a species of floating, plant-like creatures that make multiple appearances in the Metroid series.
Charging is the action of pressing & holding down a button or particular direction on the controller. Its purpose is to build up a powerful blast or burst of energy to take out an opponent or cause critical damage.
These big'uns would love to smash you into a pulp by charging full-speed in a perfectly straight line, but if you take two steps to the right you'll be safe and sound ... for a few seconds at least.
The Chozo are a race of bird people that exist in the Metroid universe. The series canon states that members of this race raised Samus Aran to become a strong warrior after she was orphaned.
Palette-swapping are sometimes used to denote the different strengths and abilities of your adversaries.
Games that numerically track the player's progress towards completion of a specific goal, single level, or the entire game.
Games that ask the player whether they are sure about the decision that they have just made.
Connectivity is a feature in some game systems that enables them to connect to other systems to unlock extra content or other unique functionality.
The Core-X is what emerges from bosses in Metroid Fusion. When defeated, they provide Samus with suit upgrades.
The ultimate pressure feature. Players have to complete the task at hand, be it defeating opponents or cutting the right wire, in the allotted time.

Darkness is used in games to restrict access, increase tension, or just to set a mood. Often the player has access to a light source that can mitigate its effect.
A dead end is when a path or road is blocked off, whether intentionally or accidently, and players are forced to turn around.
