Metroid co-creator Yoshio Sakamoto has said he'd "encourage" Retro Studios, developers of the first three Metroid Prime games, to come up with another idea for a sequel to the series.

"With regards to the Prime series, if the team at Retro comes up with an idea that does bring a sequel to the series to fruition, I by all means encourage them to do that. But I'm not directly involved with the Prime games. In terms of the Metroid series stories that I've told, the games that I've been involved in, I started with the NES Metroid and took it through Fusion".

What about a new 2D Metroid (2.5D?).  I could go for that.

    ...Other M ring a bell?

Anyway, I guess this pretty much assures Retro is NOT working on Metroid right NOW. Which makes me more eager to see what project it is.

No, I wouldn't feel right if Nintendo abandon their 3D efforts in favor of a 2D game.

I should hope they prepare a backup plan for when Team Ninja hacks it up with Other M.

maybe you didn't care about them but when you look at what games came out on the gamecube. Metroid Prime 1 & 2 are very important titles...
