Free Microsoft Support with No Waiting!?

#1 Posted by insouciant (710 posts) -

The other day I started playing Age of Empires III again after 3 year break.  When I started the game, it would go full screen and my monitor would only display a black screen saying "Invalid Format."  I needed to access the in-game options to change the display settings, but every time I started it the screen would just go black.

So I ended up going to Microsoft for help.  Was I ever shocked!  Not only was there help, but it was free, there was no waiting, and the tech actually offered to remotely control my computer and fixed it!  (Turns out I just had to add the "-windowed" function to the Age of Empires III shortcut to get it to open in a window instead of full screen so I could fix it.)

Where did this come from?  Support from Microsoft used to be non-existent or at least expensive.  Am I riding off the backs of Xbox Live subscribers?
