Would You Rather DLC Be Free With Loads of Paid Microtransaction?

#1 Posted by KaosAngel (13765 posts) -

Sup fools,

People say VALVe's way works for DLC, but that way involves paying more for microtransactions than one would pay the flat 10-15 for map packs.  On average, a typical TF2 user is spending much more than 30 bucks just for fucking hats.

So let me ask you guys this, would you rather it stick with the 15 bucks per pack or would you be open to hundreds of microtransactions in which you can spend much more money on shit you don't need, while being given maps which are always meant to be free?

Side note, I'm not bashing VALVe.  They are the only ones left who care about PC gaming, you hear that Blizzard?!  Release Diablo III and I'll change my mind.

Free maps with paid hats, or free hats for paid maps?!

Hats, Making More Bank Than WoW

If it results in a ass-backwards economy that I can game for profit then I endorse any and all developers moving towards a microtrasaction based system of payment.

Really? People actually buy stuff like hats? This is news to me.

In the Valve example it's obviously preferable to have free maps and microtransactions for cosmetic junk, but I can see someone like Activision taking it the wrong direction and using microtransactions for things that affect gameplay.  Like gun attachments in CoD.

If microtransactions are always for purely cosmetic stuff, and that allowed DLC like map packs to always be free, then that would be a fucking great system for all companies to adopt.

@TheGreatGuero: Dude...Hats made Valve a lot of fucking bank.  I forget what the total was but the Japan Hats alone were beyond what the greedy fucks at Activison could dream of.

@TheGreatGuero: Why else do you think they have paid customization options for the co-op bots in Portal 2?  Valve makes fuckloads of money off of hats.

People not only buy hats from Valve, but they also auction off hats to other players.

Some of the higher tier Unusuals go for upwards of $400.

Paid hats, free maps. You're not forced to buy the hats, but since so many people will this doesn't mean that you won't get free maps.

Are people just completely retarded or what? Money for in-game hats? I don't know what to make of this...

Free maps with paid hats. I don't care for paying for the little stuff. Vote with your dollars. I unlock enough hats for free on that game that I don't have an urge to buy anything.

Well, we are talking about people who think TF2 is like the greatest game ever, so..... >.>

I have a better solution, you earn achiements to get free maps, but everytime you get an achievement, there is an advertisment. Like achievement unlocked, brought to you by maxi pads.

Would you call me retarded for spending close to 20 bucks on TF2 thus far?  >_>

Some of those hats are really limited, so it's best to get them ASAP.  No one else can get the Japan hats anymore.

It pot monsters can subsidize free DLC for me then I am all for it.

Dude don't moan. Embrace it. It is what brings you your Valve map/mission packs for free.

I like Valves way. It means I can let all the other people who actually do want to spend money on cosmetic items buy free maps for me! Win-Win.

#17 Posted by iAmJohn (6108 posts) -
@TheGreatGuero: People like being able to customize their characters and showing off the cool shit they have, even if it means dropping real money for the convenience.  Film at 11.

If all games were paid fr by micro transactions I would be set for fucking life, because I rarely buy that stuff. So let it come!

No

#20 Posted by wolf_blitzer85 (5250 posts) -

#21 Posted by SlightConfuse (3963 posts) -

Ha, yeah, I would, though for more reasons than just buying hats. ;) Oh Joaquim!

Nope. If I played it more, like full on dedicated player (I play here and there now but I played the hell out of it for a couple years) I would buy stuff off the store, but as it stands nothing on there is worth it for me.
#25 Posted by Jack268 (3387 posts) -

If the microtransactions are like in TF2 and you can get it by other means that'd be okay. What I want though is DLC that is significant enough to warrant paying for. Shit like 5 maps for $20 or whatever they charge is riddicolous. It should be something like the new ending to PoP2008 or the Keys to the City in Crackdown etc.

Same here. But people are morons, no offense to the hat buying people. Well a little offense, but just a pinch ok.

Free maps, paid hats all the way. It's even better when you can find everything in the game anyway, so then it's free maps and pay-to-get-them-faster-or-wait-for-them-to-drop hats.

I'd argue that the people who pay $15 for map packs are equally big morons, but morons that have a more negative impact on consumers than the ones buying the hats.

I guess there is some truth to that.

I don't like it when people imply that the items in TF2 are just as easy to find as buy. I used to play that game a lot and I never found a single hat, nor most of the rarer weapons. They deliberately made the drop system inconvenient to coerce you into spending money.

@President_Barackbar: How many hours do you have on?

I get about 2 hats a month if I honestly try.  1 from the loot drops, and 1 from crafting.  On average it's about a hat every couple months because idling is so tiring lately.
