How does leveling work?

I know I must be missing something in the patch notes or on the forums, but I cant find any discussion on what leveling actually does for you. I assume it makes you dig faster or attack harder, but I haven't recognized any changes yet.

Right now, it doesn't.

Yeah the adventure update is coming in (2?) parts i believe. The second is going to be 1.9 I'm guessing, and it will probably bring in the leveling and I know for a fact it will bring in the NPC's.

Yup, as others have said the new addons will only take affect in 1.9

Nothing yet, Notch is working on adding skills for 1.9

I don't keep close tabs on Minecraft news. Any word on what kind of things leveling will do for you?
