I bought it an hour or two ago, played it for some time and created a few worlds and the frame rate is horrible, it's constantly dipping in to what seems to be 10-15 fps.

If that's an issue for you perhaps steer away from it, it's game and concentration breaking in my case.

Weird. The 360 version runs just fine, if I recall correctly. Maybe this will get patched out quickly.

I don't get why anyone would buy any version that isn't the PC version.

I don't get why anyone would buy any version that isn't the PC version.

There are only four reasons I can think of.

    1) You really want to play split screen with a friend or a girlfriend.

    2) You really want to play Minecraft with a controller.

    3) You haven't bought a new PC in five years (Minecraft does not, in fact, run on every computer that still works).

    4) You've got kids and don't want them near your computer.

Anyway, that's pretty unfortunate news. I hope the upcoming Vita version works well; Minecraft while laying back on my bed or on the couch sounds pretty great.

Kinda makes me think it could theoretically be awesome on the Wii U, though obviously it shouldn't be straight port, but one optimized for the gamepad.

What i want is to have mojang and the Nintendo Tokyo group to team up and make Minecraft 2.

    Yeah, pretty much.

I just find it crazy they released it like this, surely maybe the draw distance would need a bit scaling down or something, but it should run at a solid 30 at least.

I remember the 360 version feeling something like 60 and of course I've also played on the PC which runs great.

    Just a little disappointed.

There is an essentially bottomless amount of content for Minecraft on the PC and the first one is still printing money, so I seriously doubt that Mojang are even thinking about a Minecraft 2. If and when they do, Nintendo won't have anything to do with it.

I got it for the PS3 and I have to say, it is a bit rough. It flipped me off then had sex with my wife, killed my dog and kicked the carcass out onto the street and then took a dump on my kitchen counter and then the damn game slapped me and called me a bitch.

@scampbell: yeah I think a WiiU version could be pretty awesome. The gamepad would be so useful for selecting blocks and working the inventory.

Plus I really want a Zelda & Super Mario Bros texture skin pack for Minecraft.

I know, but doesn't mean I can't dream. It seems likely Nintendo is working on getting Minecraft on their platform, though all they've said so far is that they have a Continuing Relationship with Minecraft Studio Mojang, whatever that means. I agree that a second Minecraft is unlikely to come anytime soon, unless Notch suddenly feels a terrible urge to make it. Though I see no reason why they wouldn't want it if that was the case.

Until then, Minecraft should be played on PC unless you've got no other choice and are really desperate to play it. The time you bought a PC isn't really important, If you bought a cheap PC for work yesterday you might not be able to play it, though if you bought a powerful gaming PC eight years ago, you'll likely be able to play it just fine. Until its GPU melted not too long ago, I was playing it on my seven year old laptop with a GeForce 8600 Gts, and doing it with high res textures.

Edit: That sucks OP that is doesn't work. Hopefully it's just a launch bug that will be patched. I'm wondering if it's running in JAVA on the PS3, or it's a complete remake like the XBLA version.

Minecraft 2 is pretty interesting actually. There's 2 ways this can go. Most are thinking that the big 2.0 update will, well, be pretty big. Others are thinking Minecraft 2.0 will actually be Minecraft 2. And yeah, It'll be too ridiculous to see Minecraft partner with Nintendo for Minecraft 2.

Let's not turn this in to an argument fam, i'm just trying to make sure anyone who would be bothered by this well...not bother with this version.

I'm probably not going to touch it again, shame because my buddy ain't really in to PC gaming or anything so this was our only shot to have fun with the game.

You got that right. I was excited for Terarria on PS3 up until the point where I realized that there is no replacement for the accuracy of the mouse and that their replacement system was pretty damn awful.

You're right, how lazy. Everyone knows money is the most important aspect of game performance. It has nothing do with system architecture, engine design, rendering techniques, or content scaling. Money is all you need to make a good port.

And it's not like even the best developers in the industry still have trouble porting from 360/PC to the PS3.

We're talking about a four-year-old game that has sold over 30 million copies and has been ported to a bunch of different platforms where it works just fine. Yes, it does sound like this version was just a lazy cash grab on their part.

I'll direct you toward Skyrim, which was Bethesda's third game on PS3 and received a steady steam of patches after release and is still without question the worst version of that game. The PS3's main issue in regards to open world games is it's split RAM pool, which makes streaming in data more difficult. Minecraft is exactly the type of game that would be difficult to port from PC and 360.

There's no way to know exactly how the porting process went, but to suggest it's as simple as throwing money at it and expecting it to be fine, especially talking about an open world game on PS3, is incredibly reductive considering the effort we know it takes to port something to that system.

Isn't the Minecraft guy rich enough by now? Half my middle school students in Korea are sporting some variety of Minecraft flavored clothing or stationery these days. You'd think he could take some of that money and at least make a decent PS3 version.

Skyrim is also about a million times more complicated than Minecraft. Minecraft was made by one person. Hell, I could probably program a competent Minecraft clone. There's no reason that - given their resources - they couldn't have made a competent PS3 version of Minecraft.

    From: http://www.celebritynetworth.com/richest-businessmen/richest-designers/markus-persson-aka-notch-net-worth/

In 2012, Persson earned $100 million off licensing fees from Minecraft.

And that's just licensing fees! You could probably program the whole game from the bottom up for PS3 for a paltry few million.

The frame rate is seriously that bad? The 360 version never drops below 60. :/

It feels like 30-40 most of the time then drops to something like 5-10-15 constantly, even when indoors, even when mining in caves.

    It's fucking ridiculous.

It's 30. The 360 version of Minecraft remains locked at 30.

I think pretty much everything that Minecraft was ported to had as much or more RAM than the 360. Also, most of those were portable, slimmed down versions. The 360 version was almost the whole package, save for the fact that its worlds were much smaller. Remember that Minecraft has to randomly generate chunks as you move through its world; the 360 version limited this a whole lot because of RAM. And Minecraft doesn't seem to need all that much in terms of video memory, just system memory for storing what chunks had been generated and where they were in the world, hence the 360's advantage. The PS3 doesn't have this advantage, and so we have an inferior port.

If I'm wrong, and I'll fully admit that I'm not completely informed on this matter, then someone tell me. But hey, it sounds like a reasonable guess as to the performance problems of Minecraft to me.

Still, this is comparable to Skyrim in one other way - it shouldn't have been released on a platform that it can't run on.

EDIT: Also Mojang is headed by some guy named Jeb now, not Markus Persson, and there are several people involved that aren't Markus Persson. He may not have even had anything to do with the port to the PS3.

I don't get why anyone would buy any version that isn't the PC version.

I personally own Minecraft on PC and XBLA. i enjoy the xbla version because I can easily play with my friends and have a good time.

same here. i had the 360 version first and then i got the PC version because i wanted to see what the newest updates were bringing.

Ugh, boy "gamers." Why can't they just let us have this hobby to ourselves? Don't boys realize it doesn't impress us when they act like they're into games?

I thought gamers loved it when boys played. They're all like "banana hammock or GTFO"

Alright, so I decided to try out the PS3 version from the demo, and after playing a TON of the 360 version, I can definitely say this was not a good port. A few things I noticed...

    • As the OP mentioned, the frame rate is really bad. The 360 version almost never dropped below 60 FPS and if it did, I couldn't even tell. This version tries to do 60 FPS but it drops ALL the time and it's impossible not to be annoyed.
    • The music seems to have changed or something. The pitch seems higher and it's kind of annoying.
    • The color on the PS3 version seems to be a bit duller than the 360 version.

So OP gives a warning about a new game and all people can do is shit on anyone who doesn't get the PC version....

You know that the xbox version has sold more than 10 million copies at this point right? It's reasonable to assume a PS3 version might sell pretty well, but no, only plebs bother with that shit. Millions of people are wrong and all wasted their money...

Well hopefully they fix the framerate issue sooner than later so PS3 players aren't turned off by what is actually a really fun game.

Oh absolutely, I just feel like until they do the word needs to be out there.

I mean they shipped it like this, they obviously knew and that's the bothersome part. Perhaps they don't know how to fix it.

I have not had any issues with framerate, or anything else in the game. I've played it way more than 50 hours (even though i have it on pc and haven't played it on there for awhile :P)
