Mincraft is FREE!!!!!!
My advice is not to play at the moment. Notch just released an update that messed a lot of things up. It is a great game, but I suggest waiting till its fixed.
" :| I wish i had a decent computer to play it on. "Yeah really! I saw this game and thought my shitty Inspiron 1501 can at least play this, but it was sooo bad on it. Too bad cuz the game looks really cool.
It's because of PayPal. I think he's doing this because PayPal won't give him his money

The main reason why he's doing the Free Weekend thing (which may last longer than the weekend) is because he's trying to find a way to work around what is effectively an update-caused DoS. Unfortunately, at the moment, Multiplayer is multiple shades of broken due to reliance on the name verification.
And as far as the PayPal thing... I believe they required a 5% reserve of all sales for 90 days, after which that money would get to Notch. Notch is looking into other payment venues.

" I still have no idea what Minecraft actually is. "It is an experience. There's really no game to it at this stage since there aren't actual objectives. Punch trees to get wood blocks. Open your inventory and drag a wood block up there and you can get wood planks back. Planks (arranged in the right orientation) make sticks. Four wood blocks makes a workbench for more crafting space, allowing you to make tools. etc etc

Looks like it might be a little longer than a weekend. The state of the server
What happened?
When the main game file gets downloaded, the server does a few verification checks and sends the file through special channels.
Minecraft has recently gotten a lot more popular. The last time I did an update, the website got really slow for a long time. This time, it more or less died.
Everything is still there, though. All skins, old saved levels, user accounts, images and such is there. The server just got way, WAAAY too slow.
What’s being done?
The website is in dire need of a rewrite, with proper modern backend design. I’ve temporarily disabled everything fancy, including game sales, until this gets worked out. The game will be free to play until this gets sorted. Then after that, it’ll only let people who have paid for the game play again.
I’ve ordered a new server. It’s much beefier than the last one, and has a much more capable internet connection. I’m not sure if this is enough, though, so..
I signed up for Amazon Cloud. Currently all game file downloads are going through the Cloud, and the download speed seems to be pretty good. It was amazingly easy to set up.
What will happen?
Early next week, we will focus on hiring someone to rewrite the backend for minecraft.net, perhaps get someone involved with redesigning the front-end, and we’ll look more into this fancy cloud solution.
As soon as I started playing I punched a tree, jumped into a hole and then decided to dig to Hell, or China - whatever came first. I've always been interested in this game, and I can kind of see why people like it. Now only to find out how to actually play.
Dear GOD this game! I bought it the other day and have been absolutely hooked since then. I haven't even built anything yet (except for a sweet log cabin/secret tree base in the free multiplayer version) but I've become obsessed with just digging down and exploring cave systems and then trying to dig back up to the surface.
I've never actually achieved my goal though! The closest I came was last night where I hit through the stone and sand fell through. I excitedly started hacking through the sand only to have a whole bunch of it come down on top of me and bury me alive :(
There is no goal, you just have fun exploring the world (which is randomly generated and almost neverending). You cut down wood to make planks and sticks in order to make an axe or pick so you can mine down the world and find coal, iron, gold or diamonds, which you then can use and make new, better, tools. You create armor, build a house, sort of, farming...
Sure the game is not finished and it looks... well, blocky, but I've been playing if for 2 weeks now and it's awesome! =)
I downloaded the game and played it last night, oh god don't play it = (
I started at 10pm (GMT) and finished at 5am this morning... damn you notch!
Yeah, I downloaded it last night, started playing this morning, haven't stopped playing it. This game is actually awesome.
It runs OK on my MacBook, I just turn the fog on.
I love minecraft more than meth. (disclaimer: I have never done meth)
it is awesome. I'm in the process of making a multi levelled underwater lair. The dev needs to add scuba gear to the inventory :) (or not... will add another layer of difficulty)
