@HarryR0se:
So I'm guessing it stops being free after the weekend and I'm locked out of the game?

:| I wish i had a decent computer to play it on.

#5 Posted by Figcoinc (102 posts) -

No idea how I feel about this game. It is kind of odd.

Huh.

#7 Posted by Necrotoxin (141 posts) -

My advice is not to play at the moment. Notch just released an update that messed  a lot of things up. It is a great game, but I suggest waiting till its fixed.

Yeah really! I saw this game and thought my shitty Inspiron 1501 can at least play this, but it was sooo bad on it. Too bad cuz the game looks really cool.
#9 Posted by TheBeast (1931 posts) -
@MistaSparkle Tried dropping the quality in settings? It runs perfectly on my Mac Mini.
#10 Posted by Sedasys (149 posts) -

I love this game. It's really a shame that the recent update screwed everything up, I can't even play it offline anymore.

#11 Posted by Babble (1270 posts) -

Free for the weekend, he's been having server problems.

#12 Posted by Chronologist (267 posts) -

You can't register an account :(
Any way to play it without registering?

#13 Posted by MrKlorox (11206 posts) -
@Chronologist:  type anything for username and password
#14 Posted by Chronologist (267 posts) -

Oh.. lol.
Thanks :P

It's a free to play weekend... not free...

#16 Edited by Mikemcn (6955 posts) -

Every person on this website with a desktop computer or fairly ok laptop needs to play this game, NOW!

STOP READING, I SAID NOW!

#17 Posted by arch4non (443 posts) -
@Sedasys: You can play offline if you launch from Minecraft.exe.

if you haven't tried it you should, it's awesome.
Here's a good showing of it.

False, its because his server keeps getting overloaded.

He did but im not sure what exactly came of it.
#24 Posted by kitsunezeta (84 posts) -

The main reason why he's doing the Free Weekend thing (which may last longer than the weekend) is because he's trying to find a way to work around what is effectively an update-caused DoS. Unfortunately, at the moment, Multiplayer is multiple shades of broken due to reliance on the name verification.

And as far as the PayPal thing... I believe they required a 5% reserve of all sales for 90 days, after which that money would get to Notch. Notch is looking into other payment venues.

He got his money back roughly a week ago, and was only charged the usual PayPal fees.

It is an experience. There's really no game to it at this stage since there aren't actual objectives. Punch trees to get wood blocks. Open your inventory and drag a wood block up there and you can get wood planks back. Planks (arranged in the right orientation) make sticks. Four wood blocks makes a workbench for more crafting space, allowing you to make tools. etc etc

@ch13696:  That's old news.  Paypal unfroze the account a few days ago.  The server had been slowing to a crawl the last couple of weeks when an update would come out thanks to Seananners playing minecraft on Youtube.  Then this week Penny Arcade ran a comic on minecraft and so many people tried downloading the weekly update that it killed the server.

Everyone should play this now. Jeff commands it!

http://notch.tumblr.com/post/1145456659/the-state-of-the-server

The state of the server

What happened?

When the main game file gets downloaded, the server does a few verification checks and sends the file through special channels.

Minecraft has recently gotten a lot more popular. The last time I did an update, the website got really slow for a long time. This time, it more or less died.

Everything is still there, though. All skins, old saved levels, user accounts, images and such is there. The server just got way, WAAAY too slow.

What’s being done?

The website is in dire need of a rewrite, with proper modern backend design. I’ve temporarily disabled everything fancy, including game sales, until this gets worked out. The game will be free to play until this gets sorted. Then after that, it’ll only let people who have paid for the game play again.

I’ve ordered a new server. It’s much beefier than the last one, and has a much more capable internet connection. I’m not sure if this is enough, though, so..

I signed up for Amazon Cloud. Currently all game file downloads are going through the Cloud, and the download speed seems to be pretty good. It was amazingly easy to set up.

What will happen?

Early next week, we will focus on hiring someone to rewrite the backend for minecraft.net, perhaps get someone involved with redesigning the front-end, and we’ll look more into this fancy cloud solution.

Looks like it might be a little longer than a weekend.

@DOUBLESHOCK:  Oh man, that video just made me angry from the guy's lack of experience.
#33 Posted by sterling_me911@hotmail.com (3 posts) -

As soon as I started playing I punched a tree, jumped into a hole and then decided to dig to Hell, or China - whatever came first. I've always been interested in this game, and I can kind of see why people like it. Now only to find out how to actually play.
#34 Posted by Forcen (1804 posts) -

Those "Lets play Minecraft" got addicting real fast, I bet the game is even worse.

#35 Posted by JoelTGM (5596 posts) -
@sixghost: @arch4non:
Not an experienced showing of it, but at least it shows the game with some excitement.
#36 Posted by CannonGoose (372 posts) -

Dear GOD this game! I bought it the other day and have been absolutely hooked since then. I haven't even built anything yet (except for a sweet log cabin/secret tree base in the free multiplayer version) but I've become obsessed with just digging down and exploring cave systems and then trying to dig back up to the surface.

I've never actually achieved my goal though! The closest I came was last night where I hit through the stone and sand fell through. I excitedly started hacking through the sand only to have a whole bunch of it come down on top of me and bury me alive :(

#37 Posted by TwoLines (2788 posts) -

I downloaded to see, and lost 4 hours.
I think I'm in deep shit here.

#38 Posted by RoboRobb (1051 posts) -

Wow, at first I though it looked utter crap but holy moly is it addictive. AVOID IF YOU WANT A LIFE

#39 Posted by Catterick (34 posts) -
@CL60: Neither do I. But I love it.
#40 Posted by creiij (65 posts) -
@CL60: It's not easy to explain... you mine stuff, and craft stuff, minecraft =)

There is no goal, you just have fun exploring the world (which is randomly generated and almost neverending). You cut down wood to make planks and sticks in order to make an axe or pick so you can mine down the world and find coal, iron, gold or diamonds, which you then can use and make new, better, tools. You create armor, build a house, sort of, farming...

Sure the game is not finished and it looks... well, blocky, but I've been playing if for 2 weeks now and it's awesome! =)
#41 Posted by JustKamToo (662 posts) -

I downloaded the game and played it last night, oh god don't play it = (

I started at 10pm (GMT) and finished at 5am this morning... damn you notch!

#42 Posted by TwoLines (2788 posts) -

Oh God, I'm going to buy it as soon as I can.
Help me.

#43 Posted by ShadowVirus (793 posts) -

Yeah, I downloaded it last night, started playing this morning, haven't stopped playing it. This game is actually awesome.
It runs OK on my MacBook, I just turn the fog on.

#44 Posted by Buscemi (1106 posts) -

Played it, liked it, buying it ASAP.

#45 Posted by swamplord666 (1757 posts) -

I love minecraft more than meth. (disclaimer: I have never done meth)
it is awesome. I'm in the process of making a multi levelled underwater lair. The dev needs to add scuba gear to the inventory :) (or not... will add another layer of difficulty)

Fuck Minecraft.

#47 Posted by Krakn3Dfx (2485 posts) -

I'm running a multiplayer server if anyone wants to hop on, grady.boldlygoingnowhere.org.

If people show enough interest, I'll dedicate a server to it and run it 24/7.

Moved the Minecraft server onto it's own PC/server running Windows XP SP3. I'm hoping that's going to resolve some of the dropouts caused by socket timeouts that seem to plague Minecraft servers right now, at least I'm led to believe that will help. We'll see.

What the fuck is Minecraft?
